Does it bother you when other people wear strong perfume or after shave? |
|
Since I have asthma and allergies, it bothers me greatly and is actually a danger when people in closed places like elevators, or public places like theaters wear strongly scented perfumes and after shave, as though they had bathed in them! I noticed that even in my drs. office there is a sign not asking that people not wear strong scents due to the problems they can cause certain other patients.
Does it bother you when other people wear strong perfumes, cologne, or after shave? If so, why?
Thank you.

1. user316 (396) | 7 months ago | Yes, I get annoyed by this. I have two co-workers who wear wayyyyyyyy toooooo much perfume. It's so bad that I know when they're down the hall because the hall stinks of their perfume!

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | I agree...this is overkill. I feel that no one's scent should announce their presence when that far away. If it enters a room before you do, ack! It's too much. I appreciate your response.

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | I know family members have ever gotten offended when I ask them not to wear perfume and such when they visit. For those of us with asthma, it can go beyond annoying and present a danger! My sister had the same trouble as yours in the last place she lived. The cigarette smoke and smell from another apartment would permeate hers. She eventually moved to a no-smoking complex.
Take care and thank you for responding.:)

3. mimpi1911 (8140) | 7 months ago | My mom gets allergies and asthmatic attacks on smelling strong perfumes. She doesn't wear any for this reason alone. I do not get allergies but I do not like strong permues. I use mild spray of English Lavender and that's it.

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | Hi Mim...I cannot wear perfume, either, for the same reasons your mom cannot. I do love gentle smelling hair products and mild lotions. I think many people are bothered by strong scents. They sting the nose of even those without allergies or asthma! Your lavender scent sounds wonderful, though.

4. icesmile (1815) | 7 months ago | Hi, even i like a lot a good perfume, i hate when somebody use to much perfume, cologne or after shave. Is not elegant, and a class woman or man never use to much perfume. Just a drop, is enaugh, what is to much just annoyed me. Of course cheap perfume make me annoyed too, if we like to use a perfume, we must use a expensive one, good quality...

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | Hello Ice...I used to wear subtle perfumes but cannot do that any longer. Too much scent is uncouth on anyone. I have wondered how the one wearing it can stand so much if it even bothers others. I would think their own eyes would be watering!
Thank you for your input:)

babymimi05 (662) | 7 months ago | I agree perfume should be worn in moderate amount. Too much perfume can cause headache to others. People should have more consideration toward others when it comes to wearing perfumes.

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | Hello Mimi...yes, I know many who get headaches, or worse, from strong scents. Consideration, like you said, is the key word.:)

5. ds6413 (1892) | 7 months ago | Hello PeacefulWmn9, I greatly dislike having to smell strong perfume or after shave. I also suffer from allergies and asthma. I try not to hide my disgust when someone is wearing too much by either covering my mouth and nose. It runs in the family. My mother has it so bad we had to rush her to the hospital beause she could hardly breath at all.Even soaps I have to use one that has no strong odor.So I know how you feel about too much perfume or aftershave. I find it disgusting

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | Hi Ds...yes, it poses a true danger for some of us. People can die from asthma attacks. Like you, everything I use has to be either unscented or very mild smelling, or it triggers asthma attacks, which are very frightening.
Best wishes, Karen

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | You are fortunate:) I used to wear a little perfume, but never a lot and never the strong pungent kind. When dating in school, I enjoyed the smell of after shave on the young men. Now it triggers allergy and asthma attacks, so is out! Thank you for your sharing your own preferences.

7. lulu1220 (431) | 7 months ago | Since I have a strong sense of smell, it bothers me quite a bit. It will give me a headache, sometimes it make me feel sick to my stomach and then I can even taste it in my mouth!
There is a reason perfume comes in a little bottle. A little goes a long way. You only need a drop or two. Same thing with after shave.
There are times when someone walks by wearing too much and then the smell lingers. I wonder if these people bathe in it.

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | Ack! That is the worst, when you can actually taste it. You make a great point about why scents come in small bottles, as well. I appreciate your input:)

8. 4pawsx4 (725) | 7 months ago | I hate it when someone wears too much perfume! I almost feel like they are trying to cover up the stink when they dont shower. i used to work with a woman who took a bath in her perfume or so it smelled like it. She reeked of cheap perfume day in and day out! I never mentioned it to her but some other people pulled her aside and told her to back off on it, as in 'use less' but she never listened, she got worse! I got tired of the constant headaches I got from it and couldnt take it anymore. A bunch of us were in the elevator one day with her and I asked another co-worker 'what is that smell? it smells like Raid bug spray!'. Well, she FINALLY got the hint and stopped wearing it. I know that sounds mean but we had to do something and I was the one to do it!

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | LOL, I think you found a very creative way to cure your co-worker! In fact, some perfume does indeed smell exactly like bug spray! Kudos to you. No one should have to work day in and day out with something that gives them a headache, especially when that thing is unnecessary and preventable.

PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | I use so many meds for asthma to keep it well controlled that it is easy to lose track of what I need to refill. My doctor was kind enough to sell me a nebulizer at a reduced price, since I no longer have health insurance.
And yes, remember to get your pump: ))

| ElitePlus (4) | 7 months ago | I have asthma as well, generally a lot of dust and strong scents bother me. I drink a lot of hot non-caffinated tea or even just hot water and that helps. In regards to people wearing strong perfumes/colognes it is just plain disrespectful to others. I once had to leave a restraunt because our waitress had such strong perfume (Jordache)on and would keep coming back to my table. Jasmine or scented candles is another trigger. Anyway try the tea and see if it helps any.
| |
|
|
PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | Elite, thank you so much for the suggestions. I will start drinking the tea and hot water instead of so much cold water. I feel for you! The only scented candles that seem not to bother me are "food" scents like vanilla or strawberry. Public sevice people should be advised not to wear perfume. My daughter is a nurse, and they are not allowed to wear any because so many people are sensitive to it.
Thank you again for the good suggestions!

10. spalladino (9074) | 7 months ago | I don't have asthama or allergies but I hate it when someone is wearing so much perfume or after shave that I can practically taste it. When I worked at a community college there were a few times when we had to ask a student to relocate in the open lab due to the complaints of other students about perfume and other times when I had to have my techs wipe down a workstation because it reeked long after the offending student had left.
| |
| |
|
|
PeacefulWmn9 (3027) | 7 months ago | Ooo, that is just too much scent if it even lingers on lab surfaces. I have noticed that not as many magazines carry those "sample scent" folded pages any more, for which I'm grateful. I'd always tear them out, but the scent would still be on some of the pages.
Thank for your sharing your input.
