US Census - What History Tells US about the Information Collected.

In 1942 the Congress passed the second War Powers Act which in part directed the Sect. of Commerce to turn over to other Government Officials Census Data including information gained from the Confidential Questionnaire. This information could be used in the War Effort. Some of the questions asked were the place of birth of you parents and citizenship. That data was made available to other branches of government and the people of Japanese Ancestry, considered a " Threat", were rounded up and placed in Concentration Camps. Those of German and Italian, also countries we were at war with were not. So much for keeping the data confidential. In the current census questions there are several about military service and active duty and training. Home Land Security considers Military veteran a "Threat". They ask several questions on housing and who is living in your house and how many bedrooms you have. I remember the scene in the Movie Dr. Zhivago, where the Dr. returns home only to find others living with them. His wife tells him that the government committee determined they had room for other who did not have proper housing. I own a 4 bedroom house with just my wife and I. Can I expect a Homeless Family to move in with me because I have room. Isn't that a way to "spread the wealth"? There are several references to this information is needed by business, banking and employment agencies to plan. If the need the information let them ask it not the government. The majority of the justification is that Social Services needs this information for providing programing and developing new programs. I say we have enough social programs now that are costing way too much and not doing what they are supposed to do except employ Social Workers to tell me how to live my life. The US Constitution, Article 1, Section 2, requires a Census for the purpose of providing representation in The House of Representatives. Count the people and no more. This data was used once before to protect the country and millions of innocent people were locked up with no constitutional protections.

Bob, do you recall the 2000 Census? I just did a bit of research on it for a response to another discussion about this and they asked basically the same questions back then. I thought I remembered receiving a very long form back then. Here is a link to the tabulated data that was collected in 2000 for a community in Maryland that I'm familiar with. I didn't do a point by point comparison with the 2010 Census but, judging from what folks have been complaining about with the upcoming one, little has changed as far as the questions go. http://censtats.census.gov/data/MD/1602481175.pdf

I review the Census questions before 1940. From about 1880 to 1920 there was no extra questions. Starting in 1930 they started again. I remember the short form in 2000 but I did not receive the long form. What bothers me is the give us all these safe guards and a simple change in a law can let any government agency have the data and once that happens who knows who will get the information. If Top Secret documents can be leaked to the press why can't this data be leaked if someone asks a question of a candidate - like Joe the Plumber. The press found from government documents he owed back taxes, he was not licensed as a plumber and that he owed back child support. My concern is what does this data have to do with setting up congressional districts? That is the only mandate they have from the Constitution. We are told to answer the questions or be fined and jailed! I thought the government was to look out for our liberties and not to look out for the best interest of the government.

Wow, Bob, no offense but this looks like your paranoia is even deeper than that of Representative Michelle Bachmann, and that's saying something! She said the census could be used to throw people into internment camps. The strange thing is SHE'S the one who called for an investigation into "anti-American activities". I don't remember the 2000 census as well as I remember the one in 1990 because I was involved with the latter because it was done by the USPS. There were a lot of "personal" questions in the long form then too and I don't think anything horrible has happened to anyne because of it. Annie

It does ask if you are or have been in the military.

I don't think the census form is going to ask if you attended a tea party, do you? Or about your sons in the military, for that matter. Anyway, don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a LITTLE paranoia, just not as much as Bachmann seems to have...lol! Annie

Currently the Census bureau is determining the GPS coordinates of every household in the USA. They have already been here to do that twice. The first time is what just an ordinary employee doing their job. The second time it was a supervisor verifying the "distinquishing characteristics" of my home. (The supervisor's own words) What were the "distinquishing characteristics" of my home worthy of a second trip and verification by management at the Census bureau? My radio towers which I put up as I am an Amateur Radio operator. Think about that.

You are a real threat to the country. You could be broadcasting the truth or something. Add to the fact that you appear to be an Animal lover too. You are on two lists at Homeland Security. Do you like your file in a chocolate or vanilla cake?

This is just another example of the government grabbing for all of the power that it can take.

If you look at the questions and justification you will see that Social Services is the biggest collector of information and that is to see that you get in the right programs. Desting007 maybe you and I will meet in a reeducation camp sometime.

you are right. Information in the census has been used AGAINST the people of this country before. The Japanese Americans during WW2 are a perfect example. Plus at the end of it we do have the right to privacy. Even from the federal gov.

I responded to the last census without paranoia. I trusted my government. This go round...I don't trust the government and I won't be participating. No matter, they have other ways to find out what they want to know. I am a student of history. And the situation you speak of, the interment of Japanese Americans can and probably will happen again. Just the fact that the government views veterans as possible threats tells me they are gearing up to silence those who don't toe their line. I think that if the government has information...they will find a way to use it to increase their control of us...

The President has already mentioned "preventive detention" for 2 weeks, 5 years 10 years in words to the effect that we don't know how long some one will be a threat.

I've heard that some FEMA camps have crematoriums. Is this a rumor or is there something to it? I've seen a few YouTube videos...don't know how reliable they are.
