Another story from the vaults of my memory...

So, we are going back to the early 1980's again... I was working for the state, I'd been there for a couple of years and had made some friends in the building. One was a guy in the mail/stock room. One day he came in and told me to come with him. I followed and there, in the stock room, kind of blocked in with supplies was a tiny little ball of fluff. "Oh, what a cute little girl!" I exclaimed. And all the men in the stockroom looked at me like I'd grown a second head. Alright, I hadn't even touched the kitten yet. I had only just gotten a look at the tiny ball of white and orange and black fluff. "How did you know it was a girl?" Jerry asked. Now I looked at him like he'd grown a second head. "She's a calico. All calico's are female," I replied. "I wish I'd shown her to you first, I just spent $30 at the vets getting her sexed," he told me. "Well, she probably needed to be checked anyway," I told him. He had gotten the kitten for his kids. I told him he needed to be sure to get her spayed and he seemed to think that was a good idea, no idea if he did tho. Gads, I bet he's a grandfather now!

I envy your knowledge of cats, my friend. I don't have the first idea of what a calico is! You seem to have stunned the men there in the stock room anyway. I wonder if he did ever get her speyed. He'd already spent $30 that you could have saved him. lol. Brightest Blessings.

Ah yes... I know tortoiseshell. I didn't know they were all female though. You learn something each day here, on Mylot!

My neighbor was just explaining to a man in my apartment complex two days ago that all calicos were females. He really wasn't comprehending it.

I just hope it is not a grandfather of kittens. Did they ever learn to check with you first when it came to kitties.

I think that's the only cat they got while we worked there, and I can only hope Jerry did the right thing and fixed her. She was a pretty little thing, probably grew up into a beauty.

I'm such a sucker for cats. I probably would have brought home the little fur ball. If my community didn't have a limit to only two cats, I'd probably have more. Not that I'm a crazy cat lady or anything.

I had more resistance back then, but he wasn't offering her to me. She was a pretty, fluffy little thing, but I thought I didn't need any more cats, and I didn't.

I had no idea that all calicos were female, I wonder why that is? And why the vet wouldn't know that, either? Maybe he just wanted the money. I learn something new every day here!

well, you see, the "red" gene and the "black" gene are both dominate, so if you get any other color with one of those, you get a "red" cat or a "black" cat. Now, if you get a cat with both "red" and "black" since they are on the "X" chromosone you have both colors overlapping, and only in females... so you get a tortishell cat, and a calico is techniquely a tortie with white spotting...
