I drove past several rummages today, and being Sunday one never knows if someone is having a rummage or not. I saw a sign for "FREE Rummage" on my way to the in-laws house. I though I was seeing things & more than likely it was from yesterday. So 2 hrs later on the way back I stopped and sure enough there was a FREE rummage! SO I got a total of 7 pairs of shoes between me & the girls. 2 kids belts, 2 kids shorts, one kids outfit, 2 kid shrugs, kids swim suit, head bands, 3 party lite candle holders, 1 yankee candle votive NEW, a few toy purses, and 6 tops for me, a few vases and a lil pt cruiser car for my ds. Have you ever gotten lucky and found a free rummage? or have you held one? or do you freecycle? Or do you donate to a thrift shop?

That's wonderful. You really did well finding all of those things. I have never heard of a free rummage before. We have yard sales once or twice a year and also I like to go to them too. You can really find some good things that are really cheap. We also donate clothing to the Salvation Army or Purple Heart every few months. It's a good feeling to be able to help each other out.

I've seen them on Freecycle and the alike however it seems like freecycle is usually full of vultures that sit there waiting their day away for the right freebie to snag. Since I do digest I figure it's gone so no point.

That is a pretty new concept to me. i have never seen or heard of such an activity before but it sure sounds interesting. Whenever we have something we need to give away we think of doing so through the church's welfare department or we sort the stuff and give them to those we know it is best suited for. Some things still get wasted which I think is sad. I will definately pass on this idea to my sister who is the president of our communities youth group. There is almost always someone who can use the stuff that someone else discards. I bet I could find some pretty cool stuff in such a setting as well.

A person I think thru my kids school via the PTA holds a free rummage sale for everyone at their church every spring. They send out a notice to folks to send in their donations and then they set a date, time and place and welcome everyone to come and get whatever they need. There's even a place that takes kids clothes that your child has outgrown and lets you trade up to the next size in exchange for your outgrown clothes as well. I haven't gone to either as I have done so well going to rummage sales, I have not participated. And at rummage sale prices I can afford to stock up or overbuy.

I'm on freecycle, and some people have what they call "free sales" that are after the garage or yard sale and before they take them to the thrift shops. I've done pretty good on freecycle, but mostly I take stuff to Goodwill.

Wow, what a great deal for you - congratulations! I've never held a free rummage sale nor have I seen one. I do freecycle to others and have received many things from freecycle as well. I think if I had a yard sale and had things left over that probably weren't worth much, I might put a 'free' sign at the road when it was all done. Maybe that's what this person did? I know I see a lot of that on freecycle, will someone will have a yard sale and then doesn't want to haul all the stuff back in when they're done, so they post on freecycle that they have 'yardsale leftovers' for someone to pick up.

That was basically her idea. Didn't want to bother hauling it and made her money the day or so before and just put a sign off the main road and vola stuff was gone! Though I felt weird not paying ya know...

Wow, I rarely see things given away for free like that, when I do it is usually questionable as to whether it is to give away or has been left out for the garbage. LOL. It sounds like you made out really well! I need to have a yard sale, because I have too much stuff, some of it new and unused, and I also need money. So I won't be giving it away for free, I'm just not that generous.

I now the feeling. We are bursting at the seams here with all the stuff my kids have outgrown and I"m "ready" to accept we are done having kids. I'm hoping by fall I can get everything priced and togeather but seeing I have squat for help around this house it may be next year. I need the money too, trust me... my kids haven't stopped growing so til they do or we win the lotto or we land some awsome paying jobs we have to stretch every penny & thing we can.

I used to give to many of the charities but find it so much easier to give it away directly. When I see things for sale in the thrifts shops they are marked up way to much and the people who could really need it do not get it.I gave away so much at christmas time people emailed me and said I made their holidays. I give away good items tha are in great condition, and once in awhile come across new things I never wore, so people gave them as gifts. The junky stuff I put in those bins because they basically grind it up and turn it into fabric.

What a great idea! That's wonderful that you came across that & got so many good things! I think it's a great idea to have a free rummage rather than take everything to a thrift shop. Sure, you want to support your local shop but at the same time, you'd be helping a lot of people out even more by giving the things away for free!

I have not seen the "FREE Rummage" before. Sounds like you got alot of stuff you can use. I have gone to yard sales and even have shopped at Goodwill. Last yard sale I did was in 1993 before my daughter was born. Just to much trouble. I will take stuff to Goodwill or let ARC (local ministry that does pick-up) come by and get it. I'm on freecycle, but never able to get anything I need and have stopped checking.

I feel the same way you do about Freecycle. It's swarmed by vultures who just sit there waiting for someone to offer. They even had drama for a while cause people were getting mad that people were "wanting" & snagging things so they could resell the item rather than it go to someone who actually needs it.

Wow, what a deal, you just can't beat free! I don't do yard sales, I donate my items to the Salvation Army. There is no SA store here in my town so I know that all the goods are given away to people who really need them. Although I haven't made a donation for a year, I'm re-using everything, wearing it out, anything to avoid having to buy new stuff.

Great deals you got there. Here we have freecycle but I have never been lucky enough to get anything for free yet. If I do get rid of something normally it is clothes and I try to give them to someone I know first. If that does not happen I will give them to the Salvation Army or Goodwill. I do have some clothes now that I would like to sell at a yard sale but I am in my third trimester and it is soooooo HOT here right now. I will probably wait until the fall to try to have one.

I've never seen one OR had one, although I recently had a garage sale - which was pretty MUCH like a "free rummage" because we marked everything between .05 cents to .75 cents a piece - even things that could have sold for much, much more. We just wanted to get rid of everything. And I honestly don't know if I could get rid of my things.. for free. I would probably feel a little stupid getting rid of something I paid a lot of money for without getting at least a little bit of compensation for it.
