When The Phone Rules The Day |
|
I took my car in for a service and MOT this morning and I am waiting for the phone to ring so I can go and collect it, and I am finding it frustrating waiting in and finding things to do.
I hate waiting for the phone to ring, I've spent most of the day on the computer and I am running out of thigns to do or find to do.
Do you hate waiting for the phone to ring, do you get frustrated or do you put the time to good use?
Do you do jobs that don't normally get done, or do you get frustrated having to stay in and not go out?
It makes matter worst that the timing is crucial, because I have had to catch a bus home and obviously get a bus back to the garage, I don't want to get on the bus when all the school kids come out of school, now those that know what I mean know it's a nightmare!
I don't want to get caught up in the rush hour either, so I am tense which doesn't help
Do you get anxious and frustrated when you have to wait in for a call?

1. FFFrocks (197) | 5 months ago | HA! I get impatient waiting for most things. It's like when the cable or phone company says the technition will be there between 9am and 5pm but doesn't get more specific. You become scared of making a 5 minute run to the corner store for milk or eggs for fear of missing the call or visit or whatever. When I have to wait like that I pick up a really good book and read. I find that I easily loose track of time when I'm reading something good and forget to clock watch.

wolfie34 (13861) | 5 months ago | LOL. Why is it that they can't be a bit more specific than 9-5, and knowing my luck they'll turn up at 4.50PM. And when you are about to sit on the throne the door goes. The worst thing I hate because I am NOT a morning person is when you have to get up early for them JUST IN case! Then they don't turn up, it's like NOOOOO precious hours sleeping in LOST. I try to pin them down to the afternoon, not easy I know! I should start reading again thanks;0)

wolfie34 (13861) | 5 months ago | Typical, the call came at 3.15 the same time the kids are coming out of school, so I left it until after 4 and by then the buses were more bearable! Just returned now and it's wonderful to have my car back, I guess it teaches us not to take things for granted and I feel less frustrated now, mind you seeing your response always makes me smile so thank you as always;0)

wolfie34 (13861) | 5 months ago | If it was for a few hours yes, but for five hours there's nothing to do where I take the car, so it's the lesser of the two evils to bus it home and bus it all the way back again.

|
mechanicNOT62 (1589) | 5 months ago | I don't know about your situation but in my case it always takes at least three hours when I take my car in, so I'm prepared for that.
Regardless, I am prepared for whatever the circumstances because I don't like to waste my time or resources.
I would hate to make the trip home by bus or cab, then have to go back. There's a Border's Book Store in our Mall, and there's always something there for me to check out, besides the merchandise and the ladies (Not necessarily in that order, if you know what I mean)
BTW: The wife knows I'm like that and that's what I do...

5. thea09 (4232) | 5 months ago | Hi wolfie, what a useless MOT service you get there, and if I recall if they'd failed it for one little thing they'd have kept it in and wouldn't let you have it back until it was sorted so adding to your frustration and tension. Now imagine this scenario, best to phone up first to warn them you are coming for MOT. Then get the local chappy at the garage to have a quick look and tell you if the car is likely to pass the MOT. Then drive car to town to what I can only describe as the Drive Through MOT centre, leave the car on the first automated platform, go into the office with car paperwork and have a coffee, 20 mins later collect car and drive away, all done for the next 2 years for 80 euros. And if by any chance it fails take it away, get it fixed and bring it back. No stress, no frustration, it's one of the few things out here which is totally hassle free. Re waiting for the phone to ring I have to have a cheap mobile just in case the school rings for any reason whilst I'm out. Another reason you've reminded me of why I left England, the fear of having to catch a bus with school kids on it!!!
| |
| |
|
|
wolfie34 (13861) | 5 months ago | Ironically the MOT was done in fourty minutes but it had a service as well, a yearly service and they found a few things that needed to be done to it but wouldn't affect the MOT, money for old rope! Yes dreaded chucking out time at schools worse than letting the zoo animals loose, correction I think zoo animals are better behaved;0)

GardenGerty (20237) | 5 months ago | We do not have public transport in our small town, and so I do not have the issue of being on the bus with school kids, but I know when the schools let out, and if I am driving somewhere, I make sure that I do not drive anywhere near the schools at that time if I can help it. People often question me on my routes to various places and I tell them quite frankly what I am doing. No stopping at crosswalks, dodging miscreant munchkins or getting the crossing guard shaking her fists at me.

6. nannacroc (2354) | 5 months ago | According to Mr Croc I wander around like a lost soul if I have to wait in for a phone call. I start doing different things but don't finish them, I smoke more and am constantly on edge until the call comes, usually when I've nipped to the loo, which is even more frustrating. Take care.

wolfie34 (13861) | 5 months ago | Sod's law is a wonderful thing isn't it, the phone knows exactly when you are about to sit on the throne! I tend to start things and go onto to other things and then I start eating too, but it's over, I can look forward to a happier Friday, especially as I am seeing my therapist and getting my hair done:0)

7. dawnald (9534) | 5 months ago | I get very impatient stressed. But if I'm stuck waiting around I'll just find something to read or something to watch and if the call doesn't come by what I consider a reasonable time, I'll follow up.

8. Opal26 (9723) | 5 months ago | Hey wolfie! I am so bad when it comes to waiting for a phone call! To me that is one of the worst things in the world! That and waiting for test result from the doctor! Pretty much the same thing as far as I'm concerned! I have about a zero tolerance on the patience scale! So I know how it feels to have to wait and then to be stressed about taking a bus, possibly in rush hour or when the kids will be getting out of school! Hell, I really know how you must be feeling! I hope it all works out for ya! Let me know how it turns out! Will be saying a prayer!

wolfie34 (13861) | 5 months ago | I have an aversion to the phone as well, you'd think after working in call centres for yonks I'd be a natural, but I guess it's call centre break down. All my friends know to either text me, email me or speak to me in person, rather than call! I think phones are an invasion of privacy too. The only reason I have my mobile is for emergencies, i.e. if I break down when I'm driving, other than that I use it for texts only.

guybrush (3497) | 5 months ago | Totally agree, Wolfie! I never would have even bought a mobile (my family got a great laugh out of it and said I'd sold out, as they knew how much I hated phones) - but my daughter was driving over 4,000kms, all alone in her car, from the bottom of the country to the top - and I told her she had to text me every time she stopped, etc., and especially at night so I'd know she was safely at a motel or military base. (She was heading over country where several horrible things have happened ... did you ever hear about Peter Falconio and Joanne Lees, being abducted by a homicidal maniac in the Northern Territory? Peter F's body has never been found ...) It was a great weight off my mind to know my daughter's location several times each day, and the only time I've been grateful for that phone. Apart from that, it sits on my desk, with $30 credit to last a year! I'm far too much of a control freak to let a phone rule my life - I can't understand people who answer it while they're driving a car - or waiting in a supermarket queue! Talk about slaves ... not for me, thanks!
