Heart Attack |
|
My Aunt Melba had a heart attack early this morning. She is being sent to a hospital in Tulsa (she lives in a small town an hour an a half away from Tulsa). My parents called me and let me know they were going to Tulsa about an hour ago. Tulsa is about 2 1/2 hours from where we live. She is in her seventies, but looks like she is in her late fifties. She takes marvelous care of herself. She's fit, eats right, even grows her own vegetables. She also takes care of her husband, who is in his eighties. He had a stroke a few years ago, which left him in need of a bit more care. She has to help him get dressed, and into the car, but otherwise he can take care of himself.
I get a feeling things will turn out okay. Right now I'm sure her other brothers and sisters are headed to see her, along with her kids.
Who was the last person you knew to have a heart attack, and did they recover?

1. catdla1 (2662) | 5 months ago | That's terrible! I'll be praying for your Aunt and hope that she recovers quickly. With proper medical care, I believe the survival rates for heart attacks is pretty high, especially if it's the first one. I think some people have an inherited likelihood for them. A former boss (who's father passed young from undetected heart disease) was always fearful of having one. So, he maintain a strict vegetariam diet, got lots of exercise, didn't smoke, etc. He still ended up having one, but he's still very much alive 20 years later.

AmbiePam (15286) | 5 months ago | I fear heart attacks less for people than strokes. I've seen what both can do to people, and the stroke thing is incredibly frightening (not that heart attacks aren't). My Uncle Larry (my dad's brother, also Melba's brother) had a heart attack and a triple bypass about six years ago. He had not been taking care of himself, but after that, he has and he is doing well. He was around sixty. I just got word about my Aunt Melba. They put in a stent, and she has another artery 70% blocked, but they want to treat that with Plavix. However, they don't know how much damage has been done to her heart. Apparently, the doctors said she had the heart attack Sunday! After the surgery she told my family that she just thought it was a bad pain, but nothing too bad. But by 4am this morning she couldn't take it.

catdla1 (2662) | 5 months ago | It's a good thing she called her doctor and went to the hospital! It's so much harder to tell for women, that they are having a heart attack. The symptoms are entirely different than they are for men. I'm glad things seem to be going well for her and I hope she continues to recover quickly.

AmbiePam (15286) | 5 months ago | Yes, they can. I'm just grateful she took such good care of herself. I just got word that she had a stent put in, and has another artery that is 70% blocked, but they want to treat it with Plavix. They also don't know yet how much damage was done to her heart.
Last month, my 37 year old cousin had a heart attack. I kid you not. This girl looks like a model, has two beautiful teenagers, and was in Hawaii getting married for the second time. The night after the wedding she had a heart attack! They put in a stent. They said there was no heart disease, and they didn't really know what brought it on. Perhaps stress.

AmbiePam (15286) | 5 months ago | It's just so weird. She is the picture of good health. I think the stress had to be it. Her dad, my uncle, died a little over a year ago suddenly. No one expected it. Then she got a promotion at work (she has a corporate job that I take to mean stressful), plus two kids, and the guy she just married isn't someone I exactly like. He's not mean to her, but let's just say she never had good taste in men.

5. Shaun72 (11882) | 5 months ago | The last person I knew that had a heart attack was my ex next door neighbor. Which was sad because he was only in his early 30s. He died from it. I felt pretty bad because I haven't really talked to him in years. Of course he was engaged and was going to get married before this happened to him.

6. ElicBxn (15240) | 5 months ago | gosh, I don't know that I know anyone who's had a heart attack since dad did in like 1982 - not to say I don't know someone who's had one, but I don't know that they have - mom's friend had double bypass surgery a couple of years ago, but I don't know if she had a heart attack or not.

AmbiePam (15286) | 5 months ago | It's such a good idea to get seen by doctors, especially as we age. Even then though things don't always go right. My great Uncle went to the doctor (this was about ten years ago) and after further tests, they determined he needed heart bypass surgery. So that Friday they scheduled him in on the following Monday. Only he died that Sunday morning, of a heart attack while he slept.

ElicBxn (15240) | 5 months ago | well, I seem to live at the doctor's office - maybe not as much since I retired - I SWEAR that office was a "sick building" and I was much sicker after being in it than I had been before - and it didn't help that there were some toxic people around too

9. astonysh (1824) | 5 months ago | My best wishes to her, and I hope that she recovers quickly.
I had a heart attack myself last year. I was always, until that point, very healthy - a life-long non-smoker, not prone to drink much alcohol, and usually given to a healthy diet. I was, however, required to travel a lot with my job, and I would snack a lot on potato chips and chocolate - this probably drove up my bad cholesterol level far beyond the acceptable level. I also come from a family with a history of heart disease.
It required three operations, and two months in hospital altogether. I did recover physically, though my career and my finances have taken a battering as a result, and that area of my life is not in good shape.

AmbiePam (15286) | 5 months ago | I'n so sorry. May I ask how old you are? You sound very active and self-sufficent. I hope things are picking up financially for you, but with this economy I guess it is hard for a well person to do okay, let alone one who has suffered heart trouble. My Aunt Melba had gone on Weight Watchers around 25 years ago with her other sisters. She has stuck to their plan all that time, and I think that is what enabled her to make it. I mean she doesn't go to meetings, and never has. But she learned how to eat right. Growing up, her parents, my dad's parents, fed them what they could afford. They ate beans, cornbread, and poatoes every single night for dinner except for Sunday. Then they had meat.

10. Binthu (3032) | 5 months ago | Hi AmbiePam,
Recently one of my cousin had heart attack and have been admitted to the Hospital at right time to save his life. He is on 65 years old now, and been suffered in Diabetics for long time.
Most of the aged peoples as well as younger generation too used to gets heart attack very frequently due to many reasons. Most of the reasons are behind is high amount of cholesterol in the blood, all the peoples have to check their blood cholesterol level every 3 months or 6 months once to tack care of the health as well as the heart.
Try to avoid all the meats likes meat, beef, chicken, fry items, milk products, in order to control the cholesterol level in the blood .
Have a great day.
Best of luck.
