What would you do if you found a tiny kitten? |
|
I found a tiny little kitten a couple of weeks ago, it was 3am, I was trying to sleep, and all I could hear was this tiny high pitched mewling, right under my apartment window. I left it all night, but didnt sleep. First thing in the morning I went out and there was the tiniest little thing, no mum and looking terrified.
Anyway, long story short, I took it to the vet and she said it was probably only 4 weeks old. Well little "chupito" is doing just fine now, is friends with all three dogs, who adore him (I think its a him) and he has fallen in love with my very feral cat Zippy, so Zips now has himself a chum.
Wish I could include a pic, but my cameras not working.
Well? What would you do if you found a four week old kitten? Would you be able to keep it? If you couldnt, what would you do?

1. Mickie30 (1799) | 5 months ago | You need to try and find the owner first try contacting the cat centres then if that fails and you cannot find the owners. You can either keep it or give it to a cat centre. You need to try and find the owners first though because they might be very upset.

Ritz100 (517) | 5 months ago | I agree entiresly but not in this country, there are feral cats everywhere and every Brit who lives here takes in 8 to 10 cats within their first two years. Ive gone through 9 cats so far. They get poisoned, trapped, shot - its not a nice country for cats. I guarantee this one was probably dumped by some idiot Spanish or Gypsy who couldnt be bothered to do anything else with it. There are no cat shelters here and your hard pushed to get anyone to help with a stray dog either. Thanks for you very sensible answer though, I wish you could come over here and sort this lot out.

Ritz100 (517) | 5 months ago | I forgot to mention, they dont bother with spaying their animals here, they let them give birth then dump the babies.

2. Hatley (21866) | 5 months ago | hi ritz I would feed it, then I would have to find a home for it as if I kept it here it would make my rent go much higher, but I would find someone who could afford a kitten and who would really love her and take good care of her. some here have money to spare so could afford the kitten then there are some home owners on this street. I would find a home for the kitten.

Ritz100 (517) | 5 months ago | Well done Hatley, at least you would try to take responsibility for it and make sure it got somewhere safe and caring to live. Thanks for your response.

3. irishidid (3076) | 5 months ago | We have one such cat. The litter was found under a house. They had been abandoned by the mother and they are so tiny they had to be bottle fed. My daughter is a vet tech and the kittens were distributed for care among the staff. She took hers back and forth to work, or we baby sat if she couldn't take her for that day. When "Kiddoe" got a bit older we took her in permanently. She's a beautiful dark gray and the only thing wrong with her is the very tip her tail has no fur because of ring worms she had when she was found.
At one point we had her brother who was the runt of the litter. Kiddoe was small, but he was teeny tiny. Both cats are doing fine and the runt is now twice the size of his sister. He lives with one of the vets.

Ritz100 (517) | 5 months ago | Oh well done, an entire litter? Shame! This does happen here, but usually they are dumped by people who cant be bothered doing anything else with them. Its heartwarming to know that there ARE caring people out there, give Kiddoe a kiss for me and thanks for responding.

4. jwfarrimond (2416) | 5 months ago | I see from your profile that you're in Spain and presumably an expat Brit. I can't say that I like Spain or the Spanish very much myself and this account of animal cruelty (the trapping and shooting) has done nothing to improve my dislike of the country.
If it had been me, I'd have been out there at 3 am to get that kitten. It was to young to leave it's mother at 4 weeks old. You don't say if you had to bottle feed it, wich you'd have to do if it was only 4 weeks old. If it was already weaned when you found it, then it must have been older than 4 weeks old - 6 to 8 weeks at least.
Anyway, it's a lucky little kitty that you found it and took it in as it would certainly have died otherwise.

Ritz100 (517) | 5 months ago | I am in Spain, for my sins, and find their general attitude towards animals careless, to say the least. I do know some very caring Spanish, so one cannot tar everyone with the same brush, but generally, they dont give a damn. Anyway, yes I did bottle feed it for a week, whilst weening it onto soft food, a friend of mine had a pack of kitten milk mix powder, which she kindly donated (she has 9 cats and kittens that she accumulated over the last 4 years.) The reason one does not run outside immediately when one hears an animal, is that there are so many of them, one cannot take every single one in. It breaks my heart when I drive past a couple of dumped dogs on a busy road, but I just dont have the money or the facilities to take on the whole world, wish that I could. In fact that is my dream, to be able to buy a large place with lots of land, so that I CAN take in every stray that I come across. Wish me luck with my endeavours, I WILL succeed.

| 5. raineyes (77) | 5 months ago | I would definitely keep it. I do that with every stray animal I find. I have three adopted dogs, one of which I found in a similar situation. She was five or six weeks old, sitting on my front walk, whining pathetically early one morning, and I kept her, fed her, pinned her up on my back deck. I later tried to find if she belonged to someone, and after being unsuccessful, I kept her. I still have her today and she is an excellent dog. Best friends with my other two dogs and anyone who walks into the house! Haha. She is very smart and very friendly. And best of all, I didn't have to pay for her, ha. I also have a cat I rescued in a similar way named Jake.
Good luck with your new kitten!

Ritz100 (517) | 5 months ago | Well you are much like me then. I also have three rescue dogs, all found on the streets here in Spain, and only two cats now, as I have lost quite a few over the last 2 years. In total, since I moved over here from the UK, I have rescued and rehomed 50 animals, one of them being a baby chicken that got blown into my yard during a tornado!! That was something else! Keep up the good work, I am sad that I cant do more over here, but the numbers are too great for one person to take it all on.
| |
|
|
| raineyes (77) | 5 months ago | A baby chicken? That's quite the story... I will definitely keep up this work, probably for as long as live, because you're right - it's too much for one person. But if we all do our part, then it doesn't have to all be the work of one person. You keep up the good work too.

7. Opal26 (10110) | 5 months ago | Hey Ritz! Good for you for taking in the little kitty! I always want to take in every stray that I see, but I have two 5 year old cats that are very territorial and know that they would have a problem with it! I still think that if I saw one like you described I would have to take it in and take it to the vet and hope that Star & Luna would accept it as their brother/sister! I just hate to see any baby left alone outside ever!
| |
| |
|
|
Ritz100 (517) | 5 months ago | You know, I didnt even question whether I was going to keep it. Im such a mug for helpless causes, probably because I am one. Im sure Star and Luna would accept a baby. Babies give off a smell that says "dont hurt me Im a baby", nature seems to take care of itself somehow. Thanks for responding, you do care, I can tell!

Ritz100 (517) | 5 months ago | Its a shame you are allergic, because you care and if you didnt have that problem, you would be able to ensure a couple or so lives were better because of you. Taking it to the shelter is, of course, the best action you could take. Thanks for replying and keep caring

10. bmuchler (345) | 5 months ago | I would do exactly what you did.
Most of my pets throughout my life have been strays that I have taken in. My dad used to tell me if a stray was in a one mile radius of me, it would find its way to me.
One of the cats that I have now showed up in my driveway, looking pretty beat up. I took her in without a second thought. My other cat (that I have had for over 15 years, didn't like her at first, but now they are friends.
