Don't miss it, don't even be late... (sung slightly off key) So today we're taking the kids to the California State Fair. They will want to ride the rides, eat sweets and buy souvenirs. I'd like to see the animals and some of the exhibits too. No cinnamon rolls for me though. Had one last year and had a nasty allergic reaction. Do you go to state or county fairs? What's your favorite part? Want me to bring you back some cotton candy?

We don't have State Fairs here in Australia but we do have an annual Show, which I presume is much the same type of thing. I haven't been for a number of years, but my favourite part, once the kids were grown, was the exhibits. I loved viewing the art and craft sections. In fact, I won a few prizes in the art section when the kids were entering and they persuaded me to do likewise. We call cotton candy "Fairy floss" but I can pass on that one. I'd like a waffle please. (Do they have waffles there?) The Show is the only place I've seen them here. (A thin, crisp waffle rolled up with caramel & cream in the centre).

Maybe it is just one of those memories that are better than they actually were. I haven't had one for about 30 years, but my memory says they were great. It was the "must" for me at the Show each year.

We went on lots and lots of rides, saw animals, and art, ate some junk, looked at the exhibits, got some free candy. It was a pretty good day!

Hi there dawnald, so you are going to enjoy the California State fair with your children. It is always fun to go to the fairs with children, because of the rides and the eatables. I also love going to the fairs, but since my children are grown up, they do not want to come with me. So this leaves my long suffering wife to accompny me to the fair.Even though she does not love fairs, she gives me company so that I can enjoy the fair. My favourite parts are the eatables and the souveniors, and just roaming round. Even though I love the rides, I do not take the rides because it will look odd with two middle aged people with a bunch of kids and youngsters. Love to have your cotton candy, fedex it to India.

I hve never been to state faiii. I have been to country fairs but it has been years. As my huband don't likto go to things like that. But hat hurs my kids as they have never experieced something like that. Sometimes I really wonder about him. I love some of the snack food you can only get at the county fairs. I also like going through te exhibit barns.

Oh yes, I love the fair. We have the great Kern County Fair that is coming at the end of Sept. I love the whole atmosphere and I love looking through the booths and at the animals. The kids love the little kids rides and the cotton candy. We get lots of pictures and eat a few common fair goodies like corn on the cob on a stick, a monster food long corn dog, a baked potato, pizza slice. It's all great at the fair! Of course it costs a fortune but if we save up and buy ride bracelets at Albertsons, its cheaper and then the kids can ride as many rides as they want.

Our fair finally got smart and offered ride bracelets too. It's a much better deal than the stupid tickets...

I love that sort of thing. We call cotton candy fairy floss...lol. Is yours pink (mainly)? I'm not one for rides these days but I do love the animals and exhibits. A couple of weeks ago I went with my friend to an agricultural show...its called Agquip and it mainly about agricultural equipment but there was plenty of stuff for me to see too. There was beautiful jewellery and health exhibits and I bought some lovely towels and a knife sharpening attachment for my drill. Even though it was winter, it was a hot sunny day and I kept getting tired. They had plenty of seats though which was great. The best part? Coming home at the end of a very long day...it was a 2 hour drive.

Hi Dawn. I've been to the state fair a few times, though I haven't gone in years! And here I'm probably no further from it than you. I hope you saved me some cotton candy as I'll be missing it this year too. I hope you and the kids had fun! Happy mylotting!

Yep, we had fun! Here's some cotton candy for you! I heard on the news last night that they're thinking of moving the fair up to July. So many of the schools here start in August now that they don't get nearly enough visitors during the week. Come to think of it, it wasn't that awfully crowded yesterday either!

I live in Sacramento and am going to the fair on Thursday, i am not as excited as normal about going though. I want to try the Zucchini Weenie though lol. Last year was SO MUCH FUN, they had the sea lion exhibit where you could get kissed by a sea lion and have a picture taken of it. I did it and it was so much fun. It was the highlight of my year . Did you go last year?

Sea lion, seriously? We went last year but we didn't see that. The kids spent so much time riding the rides that we didn't get around to all the exhibits. I hate that school starts at the same time that the fair does. I hear that next year they may move the fair up to July so that they get more families with kids in on the weekdays.

dawnald I used to always go to our county fair here in Orange'county Ca but the last few years Ihave had a leg injurythat has made it'almost impossible to really enjoy the fair.we used to just visit 'all the displays, ride on the rides, and eat junk food at the'concession stands.it was the highlight of our summers.I do miss that too.when we lived in phoenix we went to the Arizona state fair and it was also lot of fun. I went when I was almost ninemonths p.g. and ate a ton of hot dogs much to my dads shock.myhubby said it was because I had finally quit my nurses aide job and was able to just relax and have fun, Ihad had six weeks of all day sickness but after I quit I never had another spell of vomiting at all and ate allsorts of goodies. ah yes some cotton candy would be terrific.thanks.

We went to the State Fair yesterday. Had a great time even though it was raining for most of the day. We walked through the buildings first, then spent the afternoon (in the rain) letting the kids use up the 5 books of ride tickets we'd bought them. Then I drove the kids to my mom's and went back to the fair to see Jeff Dunham's live performance. Normally we spend a lot more time there, usually go more than one day and will stay there for about 12 hours or so... our fair is really really big!! But this year we just can't afford it. We only planned to go yesterday because we'd already had our Jeff Dunham tickets since April!

My poor son was too tall for the car ride he wanted to go onto but too short for the roller coaster. But his twin sister was too short for at least 3 rides. I told her if she eats her veggies maybe she'll be tall enough next year. Here's some cotton candy for you...
