My mom has a hard time buying soaps because she is allergic to the fragrances in them. She can't even use Ivory soap--it breaks her out in a rash all over. Now who would of thought that Ivory Soap, which is supposed to be like 99% pure would cause an allergic reaction? Has anyone else had this problem with Ivory Soap? Please share your experience!

I have not had that problem but I know it can happen. She might have to ask a pharmacist or actually go to a dermatologist to get advice on what she should use. There are so many subtle scents and things in almost every product these days that I think more and more people are finding allergies to things. I hope she can find something available to help her.

You're absolutely right zoey. The number one thing we can do for our health is to reduce the toxic load on our bodies

You would think that the opposite is true, but the fact that it's so pure is what makes it so harsh. I have always been allergic to Ivory soap. And there are a lot of scents that drive me mad. Especially when it comes to cleaning products and other peoples' cologne. It always seems like everyone uses this "cheaper by the gallon" perfume and dip themselves in it.
I use all non toxic stuff myself.

I can very relate to this. I used to have to go in to work early just because so many people went doused in perfumes that it'd make me vomit for about 30 straight minutes... at least this way I wasn't late. I try to go for only what smells of fruit as far as colognes and body sprays go.... but what makes me horribly ill is the smell of gasoline & engine fumes, as well as being anywhere near the "cleaning" aisle at the grocery store.. oh lord :(

Oh yes, that dreaded cleaning aisle. Thank God I don't have to go down that road anymore

I've had allergic reactions like this before; especially with some detergents. When my parents would by a different detergent than usual, for example because they liked the smell better or because it was on sale, I would break out in a rash instantly once I wore the clothing washed with this detergent.
The same thing happens with other cleasing products. I am not sure if it's called the same in other countries, but for washing and bathing I use Sanex. It's 100% fragrance free and soft for your skin. Hope that helps!

my hubby broke out when he used that ivory body wash a few times. I HATE the way ivory makes your body feel all.. squeeky and tight. eww. we tend to use the dove sensitive bodywash. seems to work well and no breakouts yet.
This time though i bought the olay ribbons, and its got a scent. i dont find it bothers my skin thankfully.

I don't get a rash from Ivory soap but I itch worse than if I had flees crawling all over me. I can use most other soaps though. I was told to use Dove, it's expensive but I like it.

I have a lot of problems with allergies as well and sometimes it can be really hard to find products I can use. I also develop allergies to some products even after I've used them for a while. Right now I'm using Dove bodywash and handwash which is working great for me. I've been trying to find a shampoo/conditioner that I can work with too.

Have you been checked for an autoimmune disorder?
I get new allergies / chemical reactions several times a year :s As far as body washes / toiletries go.. I avoid anything thats white or made with red dye #40 with very few exceptions. I use Axe myself... although I cant remember the specific name of the one I use.. it's green and has a mild citrus smell. Most white toiletries contain larger amounts of alchohol or talc.

No problem here using Ivory soap. I've used it for many many years and never had a problem. My husband likes to use deodorant soap but that makes me feel slimy so I won't use it. When I travel, I do take my own Ivory. Have you done any research online to try to find a soap your mom can use?

Yes, I have had problems with Ivory soap. I have sensitive skin and break out easily. My husband like Ivory soap but as for me. I tend to buy kinds without perfumes if I can. What kind of soaps can your mom use without breaking out? I would like t find another kind of sap to use? I know leever 2000 breaks me out something fierce as well. So tel your mom to stay away fom that brand.

Long time no see! I have had that reaction with Ivory soap too. My mom has also had that same reaction. We don't have that reaction with any other kind of soap we've ever tried. But Ivory Soap and Crest Toothpaste don't sit well with my mom or me. For some reason those two prodcuts have something in them that make us allergic.

Years ago... when ivory soap was too expensive and not yet that commercially available in the Philippines... i remember my brother being allergic to ordinary soap... so my mother used the brand called "Perla"... which i think is a cheap like brand of Ivory... and it worked well on my bother...

Not sure about Ivory soap - haven't used it since I was a kid. But soaps with fragrances - even shampoos/conditioners cause my Rosacea to act up and are a trigger for migraines. If I ever take my national exam for Massage Therapy, I'll be an Aromatherapy free therapist.

I have really sensitive skin and so yes, there are certain soaps that I just can't use. I would have to say that Irish Spring is the worst of all. I break out so very bad if I use that or any of the strong scented deodorant type soaps. I can't use Ivory either. I don't break out in a rash like with the others but my skin gets extremly dry and itchy. Glycerin non-scented soaps are the best. Casteel soap is also pure. Tone does not seem to bother my skin and I like the smell of it so even tho it is a little more expensive, I usually use that.

kareng,
I am wondering if your mother is another eczema candidate, as such she is reacting to even normal soaps.
It would be better for her to get a dermatologist opinion than all of our second rated non expert opinions. Anyway, you may want to try out the brand "Cetaphil" for all the skin care products for your mother. They have an extensive range of cleansers, bath soaps, shower lotions, moisturizers and whatever. Most of my friends and relatives sensitive and problematic skin problems are using them.
It may also be useful to consult the professionals if your mother's condition may be one that is related to some stressful contaminants around her or her own personal lifestyle or diets. Sometimes, these conditions occurring could be due to self infliction and to alleviate or remove such conditions may require us to be more particular with whatever is happening around or in us.
Hope that this will be of help to your mother's condition. Take care.

yes ivory is pure but that does not make it gentle to the skin. actually it makes my skin so dry. the gentlest soap without any chemical and the best one to use if Lever Soap but it is quite expensive. i have read it somewhere on the internet about different kind of soaps. i always thought that ivory was the best out there. but i always felt that my skin is getting drier each time i used it so i stopped it and then i have read this articles about the good soaps to use and ivory is on the list of harshest soap on the market.
so i advise you to buy that Lever soap cause i think that you have it there in US. my mom is working in canada and she brought it to us when went home here to the philippines for vacation for 3 months. and i didn't like cause it does not have that strong smell that i like about soaps. but when i read the article on the net on how good it is and that it is the best soap out there for all specially those who have sensitive skin, i began to use. but my mom does not want to us that soap again just because it is too expensive. one bar of soap a medium size i think is about 200 pesos or about almost $4. really expensive for a soap. cause the local soap here is less than a dollar.

Yes I do have this problem. I can't use any kind of soap except for Cetaphyl. It is not cheap, almost $3 per bar but it is the only kind that doesn't break me out. I did not realize this until I got a rash and read in a magazine that soap may be causing it. So I decided to quit using soap and to start using Cetaphyl and that has helped a lot. :)

I have a hard time with scents and fragrances in perfumes, soaps, shampoos, air fresheners. Ivory does the same thing to me. I try to stick with things i know dont cause a reaction...and stay away from trying new brands. (Sad i dont branch out but i hate to waste money on something i cant use). I used ivory once at my grandmas and i was soososososo itchy and my grandma said the same thing "but its a pure soap who would have thought it would do that"
I hate it when people dont respect that places are "Scent free" and they come in smelling like they marinated in their cologne. My work place is and we have signs at the door as well requesting customers not come in if they are wearing scents. Most people ignore the signs then get offended when myself or my boss have to step away to use an inhaler or have the girl that isnt allergic to them help them.
