This is an updated photo of one of my watermelons I have gfrowing. Just a couple weeks ago it was the size of the tennis ball. Now, as you can see, it is about the size of a soccer ball. I can taste it already and so eager to cut it and eat it. But the wife says wait another week. I thumped it and get the hollow sound of a ripe watermelon. I would guess this is about 3 or 4 pounds in weight. Have you ever grown something and when it gets large you can't wait to pick and eat it?

I have now met two myLot friends and because you live so far away it gives me doubt that we will ever meet, but I must say I can only imagine what your entire garden looks like. You're right I too can taste it. You made me hungry for corn done on the grill as well. I have never heard of this till the first time you mentioned it. My husband used to do all the BBG so after he left I no longer have a bbq. I would think if I got a small one I should be able to learn how to operate it. Thanks for all your gardening photos and stuff.

They have those small grills that operate on a small tank of gas for camping etc. I love them little ones as they easily fit in the trunk and you can have it everywhere ya go. Thanks.

That's the way I do my tomatoes. :) I watch and watch and have to make myself not pick them just yet, waiting for the perfect time. My mouth waters when I go to the garden.

My moputh doesn't water when I go to mine. I droll all over.
But I blame it on the heat and say I am just sweating. w00t

Oh that photo looks wonderful. I would love to slice it up right now and eat it. I love fresh watermelon. To answer your question, yes, I have grown something as big and large as your watermelon. I have grown watermelons myself. Also pumpkins that have gotten very large. Sometimes I swear the zuccuhni's are so large they are at least that many pounds. Those large ones are best used and baked in zuccuhni boats.....yummy.

sad I would of had watermelon by now as well if the dang deer didn't eat my seedling. -sighs- Anyways, glad to see your watermelon is turning out so fine, Grandpa Bob. Take a look at my one cob of sweet corn. Has any of yours ever grew so small before? lol Fully formed and was the best tasting out of them all.

We grew corn too and they came out tiny, they tasted good though.

myLot reputation of 99/100. blackbriar (6633)   ranked 13 out of 1,674 in gardening  3 years ago

Most didn't come out tiny, though. That's what I don't understand. I've never had this happen before now. I have 5 rows, 20 plants in each row in my old garden and every one of them have tiny ears. Funny thing is, it's the exact same kind of corn I have in my main garden. confused

My corn and a few neighbors did the same thing this year. Out of 50 or more planted I got about 25 good ears and a bunch of tiny cobs. They were still as good though. Odd huh?

It is odd. Sure glad I'm not the only one this happened to.

That is wonderful. I love watermelon. I feel the same way with green onions and tomatoes too. We are having a rough time this year in Indiana with watermelon growth. We had alot of water that caused alot of flooding which haulted the growth.

That looks good enough to eat. You need to guard that thing, I might find myself in your neigborhood and it might disappear. Isn't it fun to grow food, and the fruit and vegies that are homegrown are always the best. The tomatoes this year are so yummy. I have been eating lots of tomatoes and cucs, I am going to miss fresh vegies from the garden. Remember guard that watermelon. Don't say I didn't warn you.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 11 out of 1,674 in gardening  3 years ago

Believe this or not, I am actually sick of the garden this year. Way too much planted and a lot given away which is fine by me as I do that every year. But so much this year became overwhelming in a sense. A small sense though. Hahaha! I have tomatoes growing in my compost, in the cracks of my cement etc. HAHAHA!

I believe it, when stuff starts ripening up, it happens all at once. It does get overwhelming at times. You hate to waste food but you can't eat it all. Enjoy the fresh yummy vegie's now, very soon the garden will be done for the year and you will miss the fresh homegrown taste of the goodies.

thumbup Oh what a beautiful melon! I never really did catch the knack for telling when a water melon is truly ripe, although it is easy with cantaloupe and musk melons. I love them all! I like to mix them, add some strawberries and blueberries, and serve it that way. Or...they are just plain delicious on their own. Nothing better!rasprasp

A light thump on the watermelon and a thudding sound means they are ready. Not to hollow of a sound though or they are over ripe. That's what I was taught anyhow.

oh wow thats looking great, well done!

I am unable to grow anything as I have no garden to my apartment, I am trying to work out what I can grow just outside the door or indoors - I am already doing some herbs.

I would love a garden! I grew up with my Dad having a huge veggie garden, and ,y brother and I had our own patch each - I remember growing some strawberries I was quite proud of as a 6 year old!

Keep up the good work!
