Where do they do their homework?

When I was growing up I did my homework wherever. Sometimes at the dinning room table, the couch or sometimes on my bed in my room. A few times I even did my homework at my after school job at McDonald's between orders at the drive thru window. My son does his homework at a desk that has a computer sitting on it and I have a hard time getting him to concentrate on his homework and not trying to turn on the computer. Every desk in the house has a computer on it though. I have thought about putting a desk in his room, but there is not really room in there. Where do your kids do their homework? If you don't have kids where did you do homework when you were in school?

It was mandated by my dad that homework be done after school, before dinner, at the desk in my room in silence. The one time I tried to come out and ask for needless help, I ended up in tears. He knew that I knew how to do the math but was just looking for an easy way out of doing it myself. He made it a major production that took two hours while he "retaught" the whole math concept! I never again asked for help when I didn't need it, or even sometimes when I did. How old is your son? Is he old enough to understand the concept of "touch the computer and get grounded?"

Have you thought of password protecting the computer so that he can't log in without you? I have my laptop password protected so that my stepson can't use it.

He has his own user on the computer so that he cannot access my stuff. I should change it for now that he is grounded from it at least.

Back when I was growing up I used to do my homework usually at the kitchen table or a desk in my room. That is where I always did my studying for Tests as well. Now a days it is harder to keep kids motivated to want to do their homework when their are Computers, and Gaming systems to help distract them for sure. But when you can help keep them focused on doing their homework it will be so much better for them in life later on as well.

I agree that kids these days have way more distractions that when I was a kid. Kids these days need to be unplugged for awhile.

My son isn't in school yet. But I did my homework either at the dining room table or in my bedroom. We had a sunroom and sometimes I would go in there when it was warm and sunny and do my homework in there. I never did it at the computer desk unless it was something that I had to do on the computer.

Since this is the first year that we have homework my oldest is doing it on the couch or in the kitchen with me. I used to do it in my room, in the living room or whever I could. I remember being late in college to class or work and doing some at a stop light while driving. But if I could write one more sentence or figure one more problem my grade would be better than being nothing turned in KWIM? Plus I worked full time when I went to college.

I worked 70 hours a week while taking college courses. Fortunately I was only taking a few classes at the time.

Hi, lilybug! My children had to do their homework at the kitchen table, while i was cooking dinner. That way i was there if they needed any help, and to make sure that they actually did their homework. It was also a way for me to find out how school went that day, and if they were having any problems with other students, or their schoolwork in general. As far as the homework i had to do, i did it before going home from school or on the school bus ride home.

I was pretty much left on my own to get my homework done my whole life. My son is usually across the room from me when he is doing his homework, but part of the problem in that is he asks me for help before he even tries doing it himself.

It's very hard to find places to concentrate, but whether the child is willing to concentrate is the most important aspect. If he/she doesn't want to concentrate, the extra desk in his/her room will not help. It's best if you add a password on the computers (all of them) and turn on the computer when he needs it. I recommend to force him to use the library computer (public, or school library), as this can help him learn time management of what to finish first. If he finishes all his homework during school time, he will have tons of time for other necessities (such as studying for exams or joining teams). Although it's tough to go through all these "procedures", but it's required for this however, and "discussing" this with him is also very important (even if he's a youth or teen). Use tantalize, it works very well. Finding the right place for her to concentrate is very difficult, but the final decision is by you. While you're deciding, it's recommended to limit as many distractions as possible (TV, Computer--password e.g.)

When I was a kid I did homework anywhere too. Usually in my room wherever I could get comfortable. I did have a vanity dresser for awhile and I used that like a desk sometimes. Or sometimes I'd just use my bed or the floor. My kids do their homework at the dining room table, no questions asked. They don't really have the space in their room, and they wouldn't be able to escape their siblings... especially since the boys share! The twins don't really get much homework though, and my oldest always stays after school for an optional study hall at the end of the school day so his homework is usually done then. Even when he's not staying after for football I still force him to stay for the study hall so he can get extra help from his teachers if he needs it.
