Have you ever made or invented your own Halloween costume? |
| |
| I have many times. But my little sister wants to be a princess this year..now that is not as easy as making a cat, Dracula, a reaper or witch costumes. She is 8 years old and is big for her age at 123 pounds but she is also tall for her age. She can't wear none of the kiddie costumes and most adult and junior miss costumes are way to revealing and skimpy, lowcut,or they are way to long and cutting it to it totally messes up the costume.Plus adult costumes are to costly to cut up for one use like that. Does anyone know where I could find free costume designs or places that give ideas? ..I love sewing and making stuff..so that wouldn't be a problem for be and be easy enough for me..but seeing a design would make things simpler. We checked out alot on eBay..but the ones she liked she couldn't wear. She wants a yellow one like Belle From Beauty and the beast. What was the best costume you ever invented or made for Halloween? The worst? My mom once made my sister into a mummy and she couldn't go to the bathroom all evening..lol add pics if you have them. | | Adult Belle costume | | | | |

| | Good morning Alice, I went as a doll once..it was fun..but little sis is persistent in wanting to be a Princess this year. It will be her first time being one. I guess after spending over 2 hours on eBay looking for stuff without finding anything and nothing at the stores fit...I guess we will have to find a craft section and toss it up to see what we can find there. Her favorite color is yellow which is why I think she chose Belle's costume. We don't have a craft store in town only a small section in Walmart. If I get to make it I will post photos of it. I made myself into a bat one year..I had black sweats and black face paint..vampire teeth and black cat ears..then I took a big black garbage bag and cut out the wings and attached it to the sweat suit with safety pins that I used a marker to color black so they wouldn't show. I think the best one I had was one my mom did..she painted our faces like KISS band. and did our hair up..since I was a girl I ended up with Pink hair..with red and pink face paint while my brother had the black and white face paint..and his hair done up black. Took us forever to get that hair paint out of our hair. 4-5 washings. Your sister did a great job on her Marge costume she was very creative. I think I should go as the Pillsbury Dough Boy/Girl this year...it would fit me perfectly..lol | | | |

| | Partying in the house is so much easier Becca, then let the kids go round the local neighbourhood themselves when they're old enough. I wouldn't fancy doing a marathon! | | | |

| | With the nut cases out there in this world it is never safe to let a child of any age go tricker treating alone..it is way to easy on that night to just grab and go since it is so many and with masks that can cover someones identity it would make it harder and harder to find a kidnapped child. | | | |

| | I guess you could say that I have made my own costume before. I wanted to be a ghost so I cut up a sheet and made me two eyeballs in it LOL. It was kind of generic but it worked LOL. | | | | | | |

| | I miss simpler times..it seems most is always paying way to much for a costume they only wear once. Yep, a ghost is good but sometimes ends up hot under there, but then again so do most costume mask. Thanks for your response steph..when it when something is simple and easy and works..it is best to go with it. | | | |

| | Simple things work good too, my mum painted her face, put on dark green trosers and jumper, put a green net curtain over her head and went as the Green ghost lady. | | | |

| | That reminds me of my husbands niece once went as a old lady in hair curlers with a sleeping cap, green face mask, and a old housecoat and nightgown of her grandmas and knee highs..and house sleepers and a cane.. You'd not think that is what a 17 year old would choose as a costume..but she looked great and won a prize for the most inventive costume. | | | |

| | I'm not big on the crafty sewing or creating from a scrap of fabric stuff, so I can't offer you any advice on where to find a design to make it yourself, sorry. Last year I did make costumes instead of buy them as we were short on cash. My littlest used a hand me down batman outfit. For my daughter we bought her wings and a skirt, and I used some tops she already owned to create a fairy type outfit. My 3 year old son, I bought him a black tank top, red pants, sewed buttons on them, and borrowed a Disney hat from the neighbors and he was Mickey Mouse. My 6 year old was the costume we purchased, Speed Racer. For my oldest, I shopped at the Salvation Army for most of his outfit, but of course got the Wig at Walmart. He went dressed as Hannah Montana. Now my daughter wants to be Hannah this year, I already have the wig, so just have to find an outfit that will fit her. You can try looking at your Salvation Army or other thrift stores for like a prom dress type of thing that perhaps you can hem until it's short enough for her. | Kids Halloween 2008

| | My mom found a prom dress and bought it.. but when I seen it there is no way..it is the kind that supposed to be tight..and it is gathered in several areas from top to bottom. I told her maybe a prom queen and make a white Banner that say Class of 2009 Prom Queen and use the tiara we already have and buy some white evening gloves and a thing of fake roses and wrap them in green tissue paper..but little sis is really wanting to be a princess..so the hunt goes on.. | | | |

| | Good morning!!! How sweet of you to help your sister!!! I'm not a fan of Halloween & haven't created a costume since I was 12. However, I do have a suggestion. My Chiropractor had a daughter having a Sweet 16 theme party. She is very protective of her little girl & refuses to let her dress as provocatively as some of her friends. Her daughter wanted to be a princess & her budget was tight at the time & had limited sewing skills. So, she went to a consignment shop & found a evening dress that had a neckline she approved of. The sleeves were from the 60s being bell shaped. Her daughter threw a tantrum when she saw what Mom had bought. Well Mom bought some contrasting lace, bought some elastic, took out her sewing machine, & went to work. She put some elastic in the sleeves at the upper arms & then in the appropriate places down the arms. She also added elastic at the wrist. She ruffled some of the lace & attached it to the areas she had added the elastic. She put some of the ruffled lace around the neck & bodice. She took a piece of heavy construction paper & made a pointed hat. gluing on some tabs so it could be secured with bobbie pins or however her daughter found necessary. She attached some of the lace from the point of the hat she had made. I don't know that I'm doing this justice in my description, but it was a beautiful dress. Even better, she said she only spent $20. Her daughter wore a pair of white walking shoes under the dress so her feet would be comfortable. I wish I had a picture I could show you, but I don't. Maybe it will awaken a new idea in your head. Since you can sew, the possibilities are endless. Good luck!!! You sister is lucky to have such a caring big sister!!! | | | | | | |

| | My son had broke his arm, was wearing a weight cast and a sling and couldn't take the sling off. We went and bought him an old hat and took an old flannel shirt and buttoned it crooked, took a little face paint and made it look like his face was filthy dirty, then we took his halloween bag and tied it to the end of a stick to carry over his other shoulder. He went as a hobo and people loved it and thought the sling on his arm was part of the costume. Another year for my other son, we took a box and wrapped it up in birthday wrapping paper and put a big bow on it, he went as a birthday present! My daughter wanted to be sailor moon one year, earlier in the year for a girl scout dance I had made her a poodle skirt, I took off the poodle and shortened the skirt, finished making it into a sailor moon outfit. My brother wrapped my nephew in tin foil one year and he went as.......a leftover! With a little imagination and a few odds and ends around the house, you probably could make a costume out of a dress you could buy at a thrift store, goodwill or something and make it really cheap. I never really bought the kids a whole lot of costumes, seems that they use them one year and the next year they don't want it again. | | | | | | |

| | when my daughter was younger, she was a cat and the costume was entirely made by me. she wore black pants and a black turtle neck. we bought her one of those plastic head bands, i made ears out of foam for her and a tail out of a leg of a black nylon (stuffed of course!) | | | | | | |

| | We did almost the same although I took black fabric and made the tail and ears. and stuffed them. Once she wanted spots..so we took some felt and cut out weird shaped spots and took double stick take and adhered them to the black clothes. | | | |

| | Let's see I did a couple Once I painted my face greenish, put gold in my hair and died a greenish sheet for a smock. On my butt I put a bumper sticker that said, "Just Visiting This Planet!" And then one year I made a big M & M's bag out of a brown trashbag. I made the white letters out of construction paper and made some colored M & M's for the top of the bag. It got alot of compliments. Yea.I know...not too creative...but it worked! | | | | | | |

| | I have seven children with 8.5 years between the oldest and the youngest. One year, when they were little, I took them trick or treating at a local mall. They insisted I wear a costume so I put a sign on my back that said, "All seven of these children are mine! How's that for scary?" One year my girls wanted to be princesses, so I went to Goodwill and bought prom dresses and then took them up and had enough material letft over to make them little shaws and bows for their hair. They were adorable! | | | | | | |
