Do you think buying toys for kids is a waste of money? |
|
During my niece 4th birthday, she received lots of presents. While she was having fun unwrapping all those presents, a couple, my sis's friends, were arguing about buying toys for kids. One of them was saying that all those toys were just wasting money although he did see that there were other stuff like books and clothes as well... Anyway, some parents would save up a little money to get the things that their kids have always wished for whereas there are some who would never buy a thing for their kids. There are those who would give in to their kid's demands when they wept just because of toys, but then again there are also those who wish they could buy toys for their kids, but do not have enough money...
Dear mylotters, what do you think of this issue? Even if you have no children, do you always buy toys for your nieces/nephews/siblings?? Please share your thoughts! Thanks!

1. cher913 (13328) | 2 months ago | well, i think too many toys are for a child because many have so many toys they dont know what to play with. my daughter is 12 and we have bought her toys throughout the years and when she gets bored, she will go back and play with her bratz and legos. i think toys are fine but the amount of them should be limited.

Try getting some educational toys for the kids, so they can play and learn at the same times. Legos is good for kids so they can get more creative and use their right brain more often.

corrycrystal (885) | 2 weeks ago | Vingyan ~ Yes, it's true that there should be some limitation on buying the toys for the kids otherwise it can be wasted and in a way, the money will be wasted. I agree about the educational toys, which can help the children mental development as well as creativity.

3. Iriene88 (1175) | 2 months ago | I bought educational toys for my son - occasionally! During Christmas, I will get him Scrabble, the following year will be Monopoly, then Uno, Master Mind, Rush Hours which will keep their mind active and alert...need some thinking skills
Other toys that he had like Transformers, Soft beanie toys like 'Chicken Little', Ice Age characters etc...he won it himself either in coloring contest organised by the local television or by the local bookshop like MPH & Borders.
For my friend's children birthday, I will get some educational reference book, shirts, cap, adventure book, or those very young children...Barbie Dolls, jigsaw puzzle, Lego set etc.

4. krajibg (2504) | 2 months ago | Hi thee,
I am both yes and no. Yes because now we live in a nuclear family where the family members are miserably less and if both parents are job holders the children surely need toys and other things that they can pass time and derive pleasure too. Mark it that now a days children are being violently deprived of the parental care and love and caresses. This lacking has given birth to unruly teens. and on top of this if they are not supplied with what they wish to time pass at home it would have a Ladenian psychology developed.
In my 'no' segment I would say if you are living in a joint family and there are a good many sous around the children this is not a must that all their demands be fulfilled. This too would ruin them. you might be a millionaire but you should let the child feel the want. This would prove as an investment in future.

corrycrystal (885) | 2 months ago | Hi, Krajibg! I agree that children do need toys as they are a part of growing up for their mental development. However, it does not matter from what family they are coming from because what important most is, it is more worth the money if we only buy those toys that the kids need most.

5. babykeka80 (1169) | 2 months ago | I try to buy things they need or use. I have children also and do the same for them. There are certain toys that they especially want that I will get but can tell you first hand most kids have more toys than they will ever need. I go with what they really need first, then something that will last a while, then something they really want. If they are interested in something educational that is always a priority for me. Most people never want to plan for the future for kids but a friend of mine actually has invested money every year for my oldest daughter for both christmas and her birthday. If more parents/family members would give one less $25 toy, twice a year, over 18years invested adds up a lot.

6. LdeL0318 (512) | 2 months ago | I love to buy toys for my nieces and nephews. I think buying toys will only be bad if it is already too much and not worth the money. As we know there are a lot of toys in which kids can learn but there are also some which can cause harm to them. I guess we just have to be more careful in choosing what kind of toy to be given to these children. We all once became a child and we know the feeling of having a toy.

corrycrystal (885) | 2 months ago | Hi, Ldel! Exactly, we should not buy when it is not necessary. It will be wasted if it is not worth it.

7. mermaidivy (3291) | 2 months ago | I don't think I would call buying toys for kids is a waste of money. I think parents should have a system to teach a kids like praise and punish; no kids don't like toys and cute stuff, when they do good, they derserve to be treated praise and toys, when they do something bad, of course no toys..
| |
| |
|
|
corrycrystal (885) | 2 months ago | Hi, Mermaidivy! That is a good system, but sometimes, it still has to depend on the parents' financial situation because if the children always do good, of course, they will always expect something from the parents. So, if the parents could not commit them in time, they will be feeling dejected and do not believe in the system anymore.

8. ced_cap (117) | 2 months ago | Toys mean hapinness for kids. i can understand that. but too many toys i think is impractical. Me as a mother of three, i try to explain to my children the value of money. I tell them that they don't need too many toys. if they already have a toy car they don't need another toy car. i bought barbie doll for my girl and i don't need to buy her another of the same kind. unlike others who display their collection of toys. i mean life is tough and so hard now. we need to prioritize and we need to determine what is needed and wanted.

|
corrycrystal (885) | 2 months ago | Hi, Ced! I agree, we only buy what is necessary. Children need toys, but they don't need too many toys. It is the parents who need to control and explain to the children. They will understand and appreciate more each time they have new toys.

9. dorannmwin (1667) | 2 months ago | Do I always buy toys for my children or my nieces, no I don't. For my nieces I will buy them two toys each year. One for their birthday and one for Christmas. For my own children I will buy them things more often, but not nearly as often as I used to. My children were very spoiled when they were younger and when we moved earlier this year we realized that they had too many toys to even ever find the time to play with. So, my husband and I decided that we wouldn't buy them toys anymore without any reason. We've decided instead to start rewarding them for their good behavior with commissions. Meaning, when they do their chores or in the example of my daughter, get 100 percent on a spelling test, we write it down on a commission sheet. At the end of the month we pay out their commission and the children are free to do whatever they want with their money. They can save it up to buy something that they want or they can even use it for the ice cream truck. Since we've quit buying as many toys for the children, it seems to me that they are more content and rarely just ask for something.

10. d_red_madelaine (288) | 2 months ago | As long as there's an occasion, I think it's okay to buy a few toys for the kids. But if it's out of whims and caprices it'll be a waste of money. Kids should not be spoiled by always giving them what they want. Parents should discipline them.

|
corrycrystal (885) | 2 months ago | Hi, Madelaine! Yes, kids should enjoy their moments on certain occasions such as birthdays and other festive seasons. Buying toys unnecessarily will sometimes make them demand more.
