Is it fair to receive salary from MOM? | | I often wonder whether it is right for children to receive monthly salary from their mothers. As children, we should be the one giving to our mothers money instead of receiving money from our mothers. But this is something odd here as my mum is paying 3 of my siblings monthly emoluments which is to me inappropriate.
She is old but she still has a sharp mind and still active. In a recent family meeting we had she announced that as of next year she'll pay each of my 3 appointed siblings a sum of $1,500.00 per month to help her in her property management. Isn't part of the duties of children to help their aging parents without expecting something in return?

If a young man or woman will work in the business or company of her mother, then there is nothing bad about receiving a salary from their mother. But if they are not doing anything and expect a salary, that is another story.

I suppose in a way children could halp their parents without being paid but I think in your mom's case she is actually paying them wages for work they are doing for her.

| | 3. Shaun72 (11889) | 3 months ago | Wow that is a lot of money that she is paying her own childern to help her. It sounds to me like that they would help their own mother out for free or at least not as much money. To me it sounds a little selfish. After all she did raise them as children.

vandana7 (1700) | 3 months ago | Hi Shaun, if she can pay that much, she seems to be fairly rich lady!:) Well, I think it is a nice way of transferring wealth. If she was not paying it like that, she would be leaving it to them at the time of her death, and then it would attract estate duties. As things stand, they dont have to pay higher estate duties. Of course, if she had no monies, then any such services should have been absolutely free. I however dont agree with that - being nice with parents because they raised us. Being nice is fine with me. I want to be nice, because I am nice, and not because somebody including my parent did something for me. It implies that I need something from somebody to don that nice act. I didnt ask my parents to bring me into the world, or do all that they did for me. The point is even if they had not done what they did for me, I would have done those things free of cost for them.

zandi458 (5905) | 3 months ago | That is what is in my thought - selfish. You know when it comes to relationship, like mother and children, working discipline is hard to monitor. It is unlike the formal working world where you have to work from 8 to 5 to earn the money. I know it may not be something like the real working world. They just have to be present in my mom's house everyday sit around, watch tv, chitchat and thats it, probably run errands for the old lady and being paid. My mom has her way of helping her children which doesn't sound too lenient.

zandi458 (5905) | 3 months ago | My mom doesn't actually have a licensed business to talk about. I think she pick and choose those who she find not so progressing in life and instead of giving them free money, she created something so it won't look like a welfare department. well, she does have housing estate she rented out but it is only minor and only demand minimal work.

| | 5. danishcanadian (20673) | 3 months ago | Parents often do this as a way to teach kids how to earn money. And as kids going to school, how else are they going to earn money? If kids work around the house and the parent "pays" them (mine paid me $15 a week), this teaches the kids a glimpse of what it is to work for money, and earn money. As for kids, we didn't choose to be born, our parents choose to have us, thus it's their responsibility to raise us, and that includes teaching us how to use money responsibly.

zandi458 (5905) | 3 months ago | I agree we didn't asked to be born and it is the responsibilities of the parents to bring them up and guide them to be responsible people. It is not the responsibility of parents to feed them forever. Once married the children should fend for themselves and in turn should look after their aged parents.

Not knowing what your tax structure is, she might be doing it for tax reasons. Assuming that all profit are taxed, in dispersing it to your siblings who are helping her, she's avoiding paying taxes on that money. The other possibility is that if she's financially secure, she just wants to see her children enjoy the money while she's alive and not all after she's gone. All of my grandparents dispersed a significant portion of their assets for that reason.

zandi458 (5905) | 3 months ago | I guess it is just her way of helping out but classified it as working so as not to make it too obvious which might create a rivalry among the siblings.

| | 8. ladym33 (5558) | 3 months ago | Well yes we should help our parents as much as we can without expecting payment in return, but if they are going to be doing actual work for her managing her properties of which she earns money then that is valid, they will be doing actual work which means they should draw a salary. But they should not take or accept money for doing things for your mom that are just under the title of general care, but actual work yes, their time is worth something, as long as they don't have their hand out every little time they do something for her.

zandi458 (5905) | 3 months ago | I agree with you, work that involves generating some income from the properties should deserve some kind of pay but not something that involves personal caregiving. We are duty bound to care for our parents without any form of incentives.

| | 9. EnglishTeaDuck (733) | 3 months ago | Yes, I think we should support our parents. But as others have said, if they are working for her in that way then fair enough. If she is still sharp of mind, I guess she knows what she is doing.
If you don't mind me saying, does the fact that it is three of your siblings, but not you, come into your reasons for questioning it at all? Or is it just accepted that these are the family members who take this role?

zandi458 (5905) | 3 months ago | Well, am surprise cos my mom is presently paying one sibling and she announced lately in our monthly family meeting that another two will be in the payroll effective next year. I don't see the need for another two as one person should be capable of taking care of the properties. Since I am staying quite a distance from them I am not in the position to help out and moreover I am quite contented as I am entrusted to run the family business in this part of the town where I relocated myself just to run the show of which everything I earned from the business is mine to keep.
