I have tried before, but never had the money to get a car and pay insurance or someone to teach me properly.. I have had my learners permit 3 times before. Yesterday i went to write the test AGAIN. and i passed the hard part of the test and failed the easy part.. the signs!! i've never failed it before!! i was so confident and didn't pay attention i was in a hurry to get home to my kids cause they where with my mom for the day and she has a bad back.. I dont like to leave them with her too long incase the baby gets cranky and wants to be held, my mom would be in pain.. and that's not cool at all!

Well the kids got along great at moms, and i was in a hurry for nothing. so now i have to pay to write half the test again, and i'm not sure when i'll get to write it because i almost always have other peoples kids with me on top of my own.

I have to wait to save up for the driving course ANYWAYS, so i am not in a BIG hurry. we probably wont have the money to do it until around xmas time. I want to do the course so i can be taught the right way, with no bad habits. and also the money you save from taking a driving course in the first year of driving you save almost that much on your insurance. MERCY! i'm sold!!

My moms S/O used to take me when i had my beginners when i was very young, and he used to CLEARLY brake in the seat beside me. It was very distracting to see someone kicking and breaking their butt off beside you when you where trying to look at the road lol. I think I frightened him. He was happy i decided to go with the course. though he said after i had some lessons if i wanted he would take me out. (as if i am a bad driver, lol i've driven alone in the car before with no licence (bad bad bad me i should be scolded)

How old where you when you got your licence and if you waited a LONG time to get it why? Did you take a driving course? Who taught you and where they a good teacher?

Don't feel bad. I'm 45 and never had a license either.
I used to drive years ago and I had a few cars but never drove further than the corner.
I don't think I could pass the test either. Keep trying though you'll pass eventually.
Having kids you need a car so you can take them places when you need to.

Hi Missy, its true, I am getting tired of asking people for drives everytime i need to go someplace! and taking two kids on the bus with an armload of groceries seems VERY daunting. MORE daunting infact then actually getting my license and driving!

Back in the 80's the drivers courses were given through our public schools. So that is where I took mine. I was 16. Back then, everyone started driving early. Some even before that because we lived rurally and many of the boys had to help their dads with farm work, etc. They could get their "hardship" license at 15 if their dads needed their help, OR if there was no dad and the mom needed them to learn to drive.

We had to take both written and driven courses all in one. I passed the written with flying colors but I was not OBVIOUSLY looking at when I approaced intersections, in my driving part, and so he marked me off for that. I looked but I did it without turning my head enough, is what the instructor said. LOL! Ok..ok...granted how could he tell? Ha.

We were taught by our high school principle who was such a goober. Cracking dorky jokes, etc. Oh..and he wore a toupee' which we all found totally hilarious. AND..I was in the car with one of my best friends and the school crazy girl. I'm not talking funny crazy..but crazy crazy. She would chase people, yell up and down the halls and go down the hall singing, "Do you think I'm sexy" by Rod Stewart, at the top of her lungs. She shuffled her feet constantly and she scared me. LOL! Daniel and I sat in the back and clung to each other when she was driving. EEekkkk! Daniel was my best friends beau and he was pretty funny.

hahaha I would have made sure i was wearing my seatbelt for sure!! lol things certainly have changed a lot huh? I bet when my grandmother was of age to drive you didn't even need a license. haha. she's nearly 90 now. I should ask her.

My mother's mother never drove, never learned. Grandpa or one of her kids, took her everywhere. Mostly to church and the grocery. They had chickens and cattle and a big garden. LOL

I got my license at 17. When I moved back east at age 53 I had to take the written test again and passed it easily but missed one question--that was about seat belts. In Arizona, everyone must be belted in especially the children. Here in Ohio, I checked the box that said everyone has to be restrained but came to find out that only the front seat passengers have to wear seatbelts! What the hell?! No wonder I see so many kids bouncing around in the back seats!! What idiocy!

Well anyway, that's the last time I took the written test. Good luck on yours!

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5752)   ranked 276 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

wow really? no belts? kids bouncing in seats? What in the world!? I thought everyone wanted their children to be safe. lol. anywhere in canada, you have to have your infant in an infant careseat until they are 12 months old, and some length or weight. and in a front facing car seat untill they are 40lbs. and then in a booster seat until they are 80 lbs!! its illegal for them not to be in these seats according to their size!!

I'm 26 and I still don't have mine, but I'm going to get it soon. Like you, I didn't have the money to pay for everything. I've just always taken the bus wherever I go, or walked.

I took the test a few times though, and failed it. I never really studied the book though, so I guess I shouldn't have expected to just know it all.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5752)   ranked 276 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

well if you pay attention to the signs and while others are driving, at least here, the test is pretty much common sense questions.. I just boogered up on the darn signs cause i was in a rush. that'll learn me!

I took a driving course when I was 15 and it was okay. One of the driving schools offered it through the high school I was going to. This was in 1995, think it cost my parents $350. I can only imagine what it cost now. The only reason I took it was b/c in order to get my license at 15 in Louisiana (this has now changed to 16) I had to take the class. Think I got HS credit for it. Prior to taking the class though I was taught the basics and taken out a few times by my Aunt.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5752)   ranked 276 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

I think its 16 here and if you are under 18 you need your parents consent. The course here that i want to take is 757$ or something, but after tax its about 800. It includes a lot though. defensive driver course, as well as inclass studying, and driving on the road. they come and pick you up, and they do a PRE test in the end before you do your actual road test. I can't wait to get started.

myLot reputation of 93/100. sedel1027 (12396)   ranked 1,085 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

I think the class I took was a month long after school every day and then we did driving on the weekends. They did some kind of testing too, I don't think you could pass the class and get your papers for the DMV signed off on unless you passed.

I think its great you are doing this, its a great experience and even if you don't end up driving often, a good skill to have.

If the cost will save you money, thats even a better reason to take it. Crazy how much insurance costs some places. We just re-did ours with a new company and saved $400/6 months.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5752)   ranked 276 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

congrats on your savings! wow. that's a lot to save in 6 months! means you can have cashola for other things!! lol like more gas hahaha. darn.. its true but not funny!

myLot reputation of 93/100. sedel1027 (12396)   ranked 1,085 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

Well, its one of those things, you save 1 place and spend somewhere else ya know. We just found out some of my husbands student loans that were supposed to be deferred since he's in school can't be deferred b/c he is in a military school & private loans don't recognize them. So we are paying on those, $180/month. There went our $400 savings plus some.

However, he's having shoulder surgery soon so for every month his car isn't used, we get a 70% savings on what we would owe on the insurance (we wont' get it refunde duntil after he starts driving again tho; which is fine, it'll cover more than 1 monthly payment) and all that time I won't have to put gas in his car which saves $$$ b/c his car uses premium.

I don't have my drivers license either... and I'm going to be 37 next month. LOL!

At 30 I got my G1 (beginners here in Ontario... with the "graduated licensing" program we have now). It was good for 5 yrs, but I let it expire, because I didn't have any vehicle to practice on, nor the money to take a course.

I'm with you... the course is a GREAT idea for so many reasons!

I'm not overly anxious to get my license even now, but it's something I must do. I have a bf who has a minivan, and I'm sure he'd let me practice with him. It's simply a matter of getting my butt in gear and taking the G1 written test all over again.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5752)   ranked 276 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

hi girl! lol When i lived in ontario i looked into it too.. and HOLY it takes SO LONG to get on the road with that system they have there, and the restrictions, and the COST. it costs me 13$ to write the g1 type test here in NS, they just call it your learners permit, and then 22$ for the card.. then 50$ for the road test and you can take it after 6 months after you get your learners, and if you get the course done, you dont even have any restrictions like no driving after dark on a monday when the wind blows to the north LOL. CRazy.. i'm sure that graduated thing will be implemented here someday too, which is why i'd better get to it now instead of waiting till that crazy testing method gets here.

myLot reputation of 93/100. CanadaGal (1622)   ranked 431 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

How nice and cheap for you! WOOHOO!!

I don't know what the costs are here now. 7 yrs ago when I took the G1 written test, it was $100, but that was to pay for the driving portion to be taken anywhere in the next 5 yrs. I'm sure the cost has gone up again. But I couldn't be bothered to find out. I'm actually relatively content with taking the bus or getting the bf to drive me and the boys around.:)

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5752)   ranked 276 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

hehe well my hubby dont drive either, and he's going off to boot camp soon, so we should have the money for me to do it, and if i can do it while he's gone, we will need to drive when he gets back instead of relying on someone else, like my parents.. and then i can drive other people places too and be helpful instead of a pain in the butt lol.

myLot reputation of 93/100. CanadaGal (1622)   ranked 431 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

LOL... that's good of you! I haven't had that same kind of incentive to learn to drive. Any boyfriends and my ex husband all drove/drive, so why would I bother? And when on my own, it's too much money to consider having a car anyways.

I have an excuse for EVERYTHING!!!rasp

Don't feel so bad. my father taught me how to drive and I got my license when I was 21 years old. I took the test twice (I failed the slope test for the first) But, even after having a license, I never drive. After quite a time, I need to learn a bit to remember this and that. Then I can't drive manual car as I am sux at it. I tried for months before finally giving up for an automatic one.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5752)   ranked 276 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

oh yes my aunt was suggesting to learn on a stick, but i can't do that.. i need automatic.. I can't concentrate on the road and my hand eye co-ordination and listen to kids jabbering away all at the same time. LOL i'm good at multi tasking but not that good!! hahah.

I know a few friends of mine who are in their 30s who have never gotten their licence in the past and dont plan on getting it. I was 16 or 17 when I went for my G1 licence. As soon as I was allowed I went and got it. I live in the country so its either get your licence or walk hours to the next town over. But where I go to school they ahve transit which basically makes people lazy and majority of the city wont get their licence. I think its a good idea to get your licence even if you cant afford a car or such. You can still drive if an emergency happens you can drive - if you get caught then you wont get in trouble.

I took a drivers course after i took my G1 and before I got my G2 licence. Which in the end gives you a discount on your insurance. I had an insructor as well as both my parents taught me how to drive. Practice makes perfect they would bring me out to the back roads ad practice.

Ive had a car since I was about 17 and couldnt iimagine not having one. I wouldnt say a car is expensive. I had a used car which I bought for 100$ in cash and it lasted me almost 6 years before I decided to get a new one. My insurance was about 100 - 130$ a month for a full driver (it can be cheaper if you put you a secondary driver). I just bought a brand new 2009 car for 12 thousand and my isuranc costs about 250-260$ a month just because Im under 25 y/o. If you above 25 y/o your usually look at about 100-150$ a month depending on the insurance company you go with and your car.

Good Luck! Its well worth it in the end. You can be very independent and dont need ppl to drive you around or catching transit (which sucks LOL).

Thanks for the confidence ricki, I guess you are in ontario since your talking g this and g that. lol i found all that very confusing when i lived in ontario. they just call it beginners or learners permit here.. I figure i better get it now before NS adapts that g stuff

myLot reputation of 86/100. Ricki911 (1168)   ranked 8,268 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

Yep LOL

I hate the G system really. Although it kinda cuts people out who shouldnt be driving. But some instructors let stuff slide and others done. I highly suggest you get it before this stupid system comes in play. My friend came from Newfoundland to Ontario and took her 5 yrs to go through the G system yet she had her licence back in Newfoundland. They basically want more money. As my friend was telling me it would cost her about 400$ to get her full licence in Newfoundland whereas I paid about 800$ for my full G licence and I finally got just before my 21 birthday. I took me almost 5 years to get my full licence. Practice makes perfecr - what they teach you here in Ontario with all the steps never will teach you or get you ready for whats on the real roads.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5752)   ranked 276 out of 37,995 in life  2 months ago

yes riki, but the roads are different in newf and ns, we dont have 16 lanes of traffic, or hundreds of thousands of people who can't speak a lick of english. lol i'm sure there are some!! It really is a lot different on the east coast! You should come see sometime. you may never want to leave;)

I was 34 when I got my driver's license. I was brought up in a household where the head of the hh (that would be my father) believed that women should not drive as they are bad drivers. It did not really bother me as I grew up, I could not really afford to buy a car. However, when I got married my husband and I decided I should learn to drive as it very practical to get around with a car and in case of emergencies, I should be able to step it. Luckily, I passed the exams and I have my license now for nearly 13 years. I must admit, I'm not sooo hot on driving but I recognize its value whenever I run errands, pick up the kids from school, bring them to the doctor and all other things associated with mobility. It certainly makes life easier and costlier (gas, insurance, registration).

I'm 32 years old and just moved to Texas and I don't drive, I failed the test twice and I really studied but I don't know what happened...I'm really desperated since I'm pregnant and I have a 4 year old who hates walking two blocks to school everyday in one way I think is good that we HAVE to walk to her school everyday since we exercise but sucks the fact that a lot of people sees you as a very dependant person, last week rained a lot and was very cold when it was time to pick my daughter up from school I was waiting for somebody to give me a ride I felt so ashamed I guess I'll do my best in reading the damn book and try to pass the test for my kids....good luck with yours I'm sure we both will have our licenses very soon!!
