What do you save? |
While EoE and his band of survivors hunker down in the big house, a band of roving aliens with a fairly large starship sail on by and see that civilization as we know it is about to hit a huge roadblock. Our aliens are art lovers. They have the capacity to save a fairly large number of the world's art works for posterity. In about 1100 years, which is when civilization should be on target to be stable again. What works of art would you want them to save and why?
Note: doesn't have to be paintings and statues, can be other things such as literature, musical scores, etc.

thea09 (4044) | 4 weeks ago | Never heard of it. And when did Brits start calling films 'movies'. My favourite one had better be packed to 'Once Upon a Time in America'.

5. linamachina (220) | 4 weeks ago | Hi Dawnald, I would have to say The Kiss by Gustav Klimt (my favorite). I'm sure with all the fighting, I mean supporting at EoE's camp we would need to remember something as simple as a kiss (and not the kiss of death either!)
| |
| |
dawnald (9463) | 4 weeks ago | Excellent choice (not just the painting).:-)

linamachina (220) | 4 weeks ago | I'm having a tough time deciding, as you can tell, so I have acquired quite the speed in changing the avatar.
| |
thea09 (4044) | 4 weeks ago | You could just have Robert Maxwell as YOUR avatar. Then I'd be surrounded by him. One of my favourite friends here who is missing at the moment has Dean Martin as his avatar, I call it my swoon avatar.

EnemyofEmpire (142) | 4 weeks ago | Why don't we all swap avatars and confuse everbody
| |
thea09 (4044) | 4 weeks ago | No one is touching mine. It needed ironing last time Lamby had been crawling round in it.
| |
linamachina (220) | 4 weeks ago | Hmmm, Dawn I'm guessing I would also like to save a list of avatars, people may submit them to the aliens.
| |
dawnald (9463) | 4 weeks ago | Wouldn't be the first time people have swapped avatars and confused everybody!
| |
thea09 (4044) | 4 weeks ago | We've really got to do something about that green thing hanging over you lina, perhaps an avatar of a famous and georgous person could be the answer. You could change it to Goran Visinjc. Or if you insist on being female you could go with Nigella Lawson, everyone loves her.
| |
linamachina (220) | 4 weeks ago | I am working hard for a color change, but I'm not sure another avatar change will help me...maybe Dawn's aliens will? I'll check to see if I can locate the avatar for Nigella Lawson, she's quite attractive and frugal, doesn't want to leave anything, money-wise for her kids right?
| |
nyhollyjean (306) | 4 weeks ago | Ah, the mystery is solved! Now I know why I saw Dawn's avatar when EoE sent me a PM today! lol
| |
dawnald (9463) | 4 weeks ago | seriously? I missed the avatar change, had to go to an appt...:-(
| |
nyhollyjean (306) | 4 weeks ago | Seriously, but when I responded and previewed my msg back, then he had changed to his current one--so that was a bit confusing! lol I thought it was a myLot glitch, but apparently not.

7. EnemyofEmpire (142) | 4 weeks ago | I want them to save anything they can, apart from every work by Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. I'd like all memory of those two pretentious brats to be wiped from the history of both art and mankind. If they pile them up I'll happily torch the lot.
| |
| |

8. cloudwatcher (3199) | 4 weeks ago | Hhhmmmmm. Let me get this straight. (ever the realist)
"Civilisation as we know it" will "Hit a huge roadblock"? Does this mean that civilisation is wiped out - all the people wiped out - but the aliens will save art works? and not the people? If the people are still around, why can't they save the art works?
If all the people are wiped out, since none of us and none of our offspring will be here in 1100 years time, what does it matter?
If the aliens are taking the people with the art works, I don't think I'd want to go with them. I think I'd opt to stay. Depending on the coming doom I'd probably want my children and grandchildren to go, so I'd want them to take a bit of our family history (photos etc) and of course a Bible - many Bibles - and some of my theology books. I'd hope that others would take literature classics like Jane Austen, Charles Dickens etc so that we would be remembered in a more favourable light than today's literature would give.
As far as works of art, I appreciate them and wouldn't want them destroyed, but of more value to me personally are the paintings I have by one of my sons and various craft items by my sons and my grandchildren. I would want their safety assured above any art works. As for music, if my sons are going, they will carry music with them. One will carry Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin and all the classics, one will carry music of the 50s-70s and the others will carry other styles.
I'm glad this is only "what if"
| |
| |
dawnald (9463) | 4 weeks ago | Enough people are NOT wiped out that there will be enough around so that we can rebuild in 1100 years. Make sense?
Maybe the aliens will take your kids and grandkids to safeguard all the art for us.
