Doctors...They Don't Know Everything... |
|
I finally got around to going to the doctors to have my diabetes checked. Talk about a nightmare. I have a pretty decent doctor but sometimes he can be a real butthead. So, I go to see him and tell him that I think I need to have it tested again b/c I’m having a lot of trouble with pain in my feet and my schedule of eating a small meal every 3 hours doesn’t seem to be working right anymore. First he tries to tell me that my chart says I am borderline diabetic (kind of like being borderline pregnant, you either are or your not), then he kind of blows off any concerns I have. Finally he half-hearted tells me that I have to go have a 4 hour glucose tolerance test done at the hospital lab. Oh joy, nothing to eat after midnight and half a day of starving and sickness.
So, I didn’t eat anything after 11:30pm and didn’t even have water b/c I didn’t know if it would affect the test. By 9am when we head out to the hospital, I’m already sick to my stomach, dizzy and have the start of a migraine. Once there they can’t find a vein…well, they can find one but can’t get any blood out of them…finally they do a finger poke and milk my finger to get the blood. Now I get to sit in the hall and they’ll bring me a cup of juice. For those that don’t know, they take blood once every hour for 4 hours for this particular test. So, finally the nurse comes out and tells me they canceled my test b/c my sugar was too high. She says it has to be under 100…mine was 269. So, we head back to the doctor who is now surprised that…GUESS WHAT…I’m diabetic…DUH, I told you that when I was here the first time. So, I have Type 2 Diabetes and I think medication is right around the corner.
Have you ever had a doctor not believe you when you tell him what’s wrong? Why do doctors always act like they know your body better than you do even though you live in your body? Do you have veins that are hard to hit or don’t give blood?

1. celticeagle (4497) | 4 weeks ago | Buttheads? Yes, I know of them well. It very much sounds like you need to get yourself another doctor. Are you seeing a specialist? If not you should! You are in the clutches of a quack! I have very small veins and I always ask for a small needle when they go to take blood for tests. I hope things go better for you. I hope you get a new doctor. This one sounds like a jerk and what I named him before. Specialist and better doctor is what you need!!

2. fjaril (4141) | 4 weeks ago | For Pete SAKE!! twoey!! Say it like you mean it, girl!!
You poor dear, all that and the end result is but what it already was, only you are wound so tight you could fly to the moon!
I am sorry you have this diabetes. not at all nice to have to worry about what you eat and drink and if your blood is up or down or remember if you took that tablet and when.
Sometimes it IS indeed frustrating to go to a doctor and have him brush you off as less that worth his time, although you're no doubt good for his pocketbook!!
Hang in there, my friend..be good to you, too!

4. ANTIQUELADY (11104) | 4 weeks ago | Doctors are sure not like they use to be. They really don't show much interest in whatever your problem is, i don't think. Some of them are worse than others. I'm sorry u had such a time w/yours. My viens are usually pretty godd to hit & i bleed freely so don't usually have a problem w/that either. Better luck next time.

5. Binthu (2906) | 4 weeks ago | Hi Twoey,
Again I am appreciating your good discussion related to the diabetics. When you have some indication like frequent urination, pain in the feet, feels tiredness all the time, drinking water all the times etc., would indicate the symptoms for the diabetics, so you have to go to the any lab for the normal blood test for diabetics in order to find the reading of blood sugar level. After that you have to go and consult with your doctor for the further treatments. As a doctor he was surprised that because you are so young and also he guess that you don't have the possibility to have the high blood sugar, that is the reasons your doctor just told like that, but unfortunately we can not predict anything without proper blood test.
Have a nice day.

6. paula27661 (5132) | 4 weeks ago | I have come across this time and time again. You know your own body and you know when something isn’t right and yet they tell you that you are fine and to go home and have a lie down.
My friend experienced this recently. She has very poor health and is scheduled for a kidney transplant from her sister next February and that is not enough she suffers from bleeds in her brain which have resulted in two brain operations already.
She hit her head on the bedroom dresser a couple of weeks ago and developed a strange headache that wouldn’t go away. By the third day she saw her doctor who told it was just a migraine and ignored her when she stated that no, this was no migraine and she knew there was something wrong.
Her husband had to take her into ER that night when she had a seizure and that’s when she was admitted, they did a scan and sure enough there is another bleed that needs to be attended to immediately or she may die so another operation is on its way.
She could have had an aneurism and died that night instead of just having a seizure all thanks to a doctor who decided she had just a migraine!

7. scarlet_woman (8756) | 4 weeks ago | i had one doctor ask me snidely "when did you get your MD?" when i questioned his assessment...and he was so fired.
i have many examples of how they messed up on me-but i'll give you one. when i was a teenager-and they don't listen to teens anyway-i couldn't stop coughing.and i mean 24 hours straight. he couldn't find the problem, and i thought it might be allergies. he declared it "psychosomatic" (doctor speak for damned if i know).
5 hours later i'm in the hospital, they had to cut my clothes off me. the shirt i thought was acrylic was wool(no tag)-and the fibers were in my lungs. my skin was all rashed.
did he apologize for being rude? hell no.

8. BarBaraPrz (3334) | 4 weeks ago | My veins seem to be ok but I had a doctor tell me my toe wasn't broken because I didn't pass out in pain when she manipulated it. She wouldn't authorize x-rays. Finally, after about a month she relented and sent me to an orthopedic surgeon. By that time, it had already started knitting together (out of alignment) so nothing was done about it other than some physio to correct the way I wasn't walking on it...

9. greenfeathers (566) | 4 weeks ago | I'd suspect that its not so much that they know your body better than you do. They're trained to think within certain perameters and, perhaps, because of that training can't/won't diagnose unless such diagnosis comes from/thru a source that they're trained to accept (tests).. As far as veins go, my are prominent. A blind man could find them.. Enjoy!

10. getbrowser (1431) | 4 weeks ago | Yes, I have met such a so bad situation before.
It is obvious that we are more familiar with ourselves. However, as a doctor, they often hold the idea that they have a good knowledge of people's health. So, they oftenact like they know your body better than you do even though you live in your body. Although they have been familiar with the situation, they may gain a conclusion quickly even without any analysis.
If we have a different idea with them, then they may ignore what we think completely.
