They did not have alot of money for sure but i just had never seen anyone cook the same thing like that. She cooked fresh ones every day because they never had any leftovers when it came to the beans, lol. I'm a firm believer in watching my money. I didn't see anything in your response about a trip to tennessee. u go & enjoy yourself. Retirement will take care of itself. U are a survivor, u will be fine & like u said look at the memories u will have. Thanks for responding.

My daughter will be in Tennessee for Thanksgiving this year and also celebrating her Birthday. She needs to go to NC to see her house and do a Little business and THEN OUR FRIENDS FORM Tennessee WILL DRIVE AND COLLECT HER AND SHE WILL STAY WITH THEM FIOR A FEW DAYS BEFORE RETURNING. I JUST CAN'T SFFORD TO DO IT THIS YEAR.

@Cynthiann, I didn't mean your soup habit was wrong but it sure sounds tedious, I meant your card approach. I'm debating whether to open a personal finance interest for tips. What to call it though?

Oh you meant by credit cardTo be honest I am not earning enough to meet my basic needs. This us why I have a part time job during the tourist season. I use this money to fling on my CC. There is no way to keep to a budget as our electricity rats have again be raised and so this bill will have to go on my CC I grow quite a lot of food and my friends and I exchange fruit from each other's garden. I am frugal but I took on the responsibility to pay for schooling for a child many years ago and now I am praying to get enough money together so that she can do a paralegal course. She has a first degree and is fluent in Spanish but cannot get a job. Then I have 2 children unemployed though one is trying to grow a quick cash crop on the farm. It may spoil your day but the interest rate here is 47%. Yes, you. read it right. I think your idea is a great one so why don't you just call it saving tips and we could all chip in.

hOW BORING TO HAVE TO EAT THE SAME THING FOR 3 WEEKS. tHE MAID SOUNDS LIKE TO ME SHE HAS ABIT OF AN ATTITUDE WHICH I WOULDN'T LIKE TO START WITH. lOOKS LIKE YOUR MOTHER WOULD SPEAK up to her on her account & because u are there to. bunnybon, in fact I can cook but I wouldn't like to mess around in the kitchen and since she is paid for the job I do not want to relieve her of her duties. More over I don't cook when ingredients are incomplete. Cooking takes a lot of time so I leave the chores to her so I'll have more time mylotting.

My goodness, what a nice big family. I envy anyone w/a big family.They may have been poor but i bet they had alot of love. I like beans & cornbread to. Hard to beat that soul food.

Well, their dad wasn't a very good dad. But the brothers and sisters and his mother always took care of each other.

I'm sorry he wasn't a good one. There are alot of bad ones around. it's very sad.

Well, he kept a roof over their heads, and he gave every single one of his kids a good work ethic. My dad got two jobs just because one of his brothers worked at the place prior. The man said, if you're a Cariker (my dad's and my last name), I'll hire you. That's how much of a hard worker they were. But my dad's father was not loving, was not kind, and had very little patience. And well, my dad's father didn't spank, if you know what I mean.

Ambie, u are very fortunate to have such a good dad. It's sad his fater was like that but he overcame all the bad stuff & turned out to be a wonderful guy. My hat is off to him for doing that.

tHEY were poor people but i think really they just loved the beans. I love alot of things but i know of anything i would want every day.

Yes, my dad and my living grandparents talk about how much beans they used to eat because they were poor. My dad says the only time he got fruit was when he was at school (their school handed out an apple to each kid every other day because they knew the kids weren't getting proper nutrition). They just couldn't afford it.

Ambie, people went through some hard times years back but i think it made alot of people good people & made them appreciate what they could do for their families.

I love them. Mine i had for supper were very good. I shared w/my friend across the st. & she said they enjoyed them to. I don't want them every day tho.

Mine were good i had tonight but sure don't want anything i can think of every day. I had bought some country ham pieces, i boiled them till they started to get tender then i added the beans, hot pepper, black pepper, salt & a little sugar. i let tehm cook most of the afternoon on a low heat. stirring them every once in awhile & adding water when i needed to. I have given up chasing gogs, I HOPE. LOL.

eVERYBODY AROUND HERE DOES BLAK EYED PEAS FOR NEW YEARS DAY. I am sorry u got sick on beans. I have always heard that happens when u get sick on something. Glad u or uo 7 AT EM' AGAIN. My grandfather had polio since he was just 3 years old. He got off a chair and fell to the floor and wasn't able to walk without crutches since. He's in Heaven now, bless his heart for he was such a good good man. When my grandmother met him, everybody was appalled that she was interested in him because he was "different" but she dated him anyway and later married him. He worked at this store and memorized all the labels and information on everything that the stored sold. The owner of the store kept him on because he was so good at what he did. Then the owner died and the snot box daughter took over and fired my grandfather because he was "different". Back then, it was ok to discriminate but oh so wrong. My grandfather was a fighter. He looked everywhere for a job but couldn't find one. He and my grandmother had a terrible time feeding their three kids and a neighbor gave my grandmother a pot of chicken noodle soup over the fence every night for months. My grandmother grew to hate chicken noodle soup because of having it so often that she grew tired of it and then hated it. Finally a friend got in touch with a man at another store and he hired granddaddy on the spot and granddaddy stayed until he retired.
BTW, my mistake, yes, it is black eyed peas that mom makes, not great northern. I get them mixed up, I like black eyed peas.

Sounds to me Cat, your grandfather was a wonderful man & one to be admired. It was a real shame the women treated him that way. I hope she got what was coming to her & i bet she did. I hate to see anyone mistreated like that. I bet your grandma did get sick of the soup but what a nice neighbor to do that for her. I don't think u can go wrong ever helping people who need help like that. talking about the black eyed peas, i like them to but had a friend that hated them but every new years she would buy a can of them, open it up & eat one spoon ful so u could have good luck, lol. i BET U DID GET TIRED of making biscuits. She didn't fix a whole lot more to go w/them. She very seldom ever cooked any kind of meat. They were poor people & i feel she did the best she could.
