Mylot's List of Repeated Discussions

It has come to my attention that repeated discussions can be a real annoyance. I know that we are not a regular message board / forum in that we can not "sticky" a discussion. For this reason, I've decided to start a category in the hopes that people will see it and add this category to their list. The category I hope will entail lists of discussions that are repeated so that new members and old members alike will not make the mistake of starting a discussion that will get deleted, or will not get any responses at all. I will start the list, I ask that you please look through this list, and add your own list in this response, please also look through all responses that are made so that you do not repeat the title or subject of a discussion that has already been listed here as a repeat. I think that was a bit of a tongue twister but I hope you got it. To make this a discussion as well as just a list, I'll ask this question, and please feel free to ask me questions as well. Do you think this is a good idea? 1. Discussions about Ice Cream 2. Discussions about Earnings 3. Discussions about Milestones 4. Discussions complaining about discussions about guidelines being broken (hence this discussion category) 5. Discussions about Arranged Marriages. 6. Discussions about which is the best video game console 7. Discussions asking about the algorithm 8. Discussions asking about paypal for India Residents 9. Discussions about the same PTC site asking the same questions(Especially ones with referral links) 10. Discussions about when you can copy and paste or use emoticons. I am sending this discussion as well as a link to the category to all of my friends. I hope you will do the same, and add this category. My husband will be starting a discussion about this category to hopefully get people to add this category. I ask that you please stay on subject on each discussion you make within this category. This is to help the old and new members alike. 10.

Hi Amber, signing up for service my dear. So you want us to add to your list of repeated discussions if I've got this right. I'll just put a couple for now just to make sure that's what you're after. Well last night I noticed a repeat of one of my earlier discussions, can't remember the exact title but I think mine was titled 'Do you sometimes have the habit of following your mylot friends around?' This appeared again yesterday by someone else, it could just have been a co-incidence but mine was quite popular when I posted it. Now the one that does annoy me is the repeated, on the lines of, 'I'm thinking of leaving Mylot' followed by the usual list of whines, no one answers my quality discussions, I don't make any money, no one likes me boo hoo. Repeated sometimes by the same poster. Now is that the kind of thing you were looking for? I do forsee one problem with this interest though Amber, I think a lot of respondents might keep referring to pizza toppings and ice cream toppings as their pet hate repeated discussions. I must try to find time later for an original one, what to you think of 'favourite ice cream on top of your pizza?

Thea and Cynthiann, My two favorite people!, and yes I tell everyone that! Lol! Well thea, you have it right, I want the juice on repeated discussions. I hope this works, but it doesn't seem it will. Now Cynthiann, Just think of discussions you've seen repeated and respond to me about them... That's all there is to it, if you want to, add the interest once you respond (you know it comes up do you want to add ____ under _____) ... Hope I clarified, I can be very confusing! Off to catch up, I seem to fall behind constantly!

I'm back, I am so used to pressing 'no thanks' to every interest that I did it automatically whilst of course you want us to add it so I will now.

This is a great idea baby, and I hope a lot of people see this discussion and add to it and when it comes to me some of the discussions I have seen repeated are one. Favorite Video Game two Favorite Pizza Toppings three. Best French Fries four. Discussions About Subway five. Discussions About Sleeping six. Best Brand of Laptop seven. Best Internet Provider eight. Discussions About Pets I have seen these discussions over and over again as well as others than I can not recall right off hand, and it can be quite a nuisance since it happens almost everyday, and I hope everyone adds this category and spreads the word,I love you.

I am so glad that you have responded to me as you have made some very good points on repeated discussions. Laptop discussions seem to be repeated a lot. I can understand if it's an issue that happens, but if a question about what's the best laptop... Technically we are supposed to be reading every response and comment, I don't and I'm sure many others don't... But we do need to start doing this.

Ha, I also sometimes get annoyed with the unoriginality of questions. Not to say that we shouldn't expect a few here and there, being that there are 180,000-some members on MyLot and I'm sure thousands of discussions..But still. It gets old. My big tiff is when there are meaningless questions like "What is love?" and "What makes a good friend?" or "What is a friend?". These questions.. almost universally have the same answer, and I see them being started (usually by newbies) like twice a day, on the day. *rolls eyes*

Maezee, I would swanny you haven't been on here in awhile! Now I agree, those meaningless ones that have the same universal answer tend to be the ones we see three to four times daily... Now I haven't seen this in awhile, but sometimes by the same person. The discussion gets deleted, then they start it again, or if it's not deleted they start it in a different category. Now I realize they may have done this as it's accepted on gather but not here.

Unfortunately, it is the simple, minial, or duplicating topics that often get much responses. It is the the thought provoking ones that get ignored because most people don't want to put too much time in their response. It takes up too much of their time. Therefore, topics such as the ones you describe will always continue, if people continue to respond to them.

I've read all too often that a response, discussion, or comment was too long. I've even said that myself, but it's those discussions that are the more thought provoking and meaningful. Before and after I started this discussion I've fallen victim to responding to those repeated all because they either interest me, or it's just something to respond to. I think that's what most people do, it's just something to respond to so rather then report it or ignore it, they respond, it gets popular only to either be deleted later, or just be one of those annoying ones that keep popping up.

Asking for a short response is just like telling mylot you won't read there input if it is long. Kind of wrong if you ask me, I tend to ignore those as well. I think I've asked for short responses in the past, but I've even asked for longer ones, and end up with shorter ones... Maybe reverse pyschology would work there.

And I am one the culprits that can make a discussion or response long, depending on the type of discussion it is. But to be truthful, the discussions that ask for only a short response, don't interest me at all. They are quite boring, and I ignore them. But if they are the only ones that get many responses to, I just might join them. lol

hello cowgirl, that is actually a great idea, this might give the admin some guide on which user should be deleted in case they face guilty of making similar topic. but trouble is that what if the duplicate discussion is accidental, and you could copy paste the link of those discussions per list that you have come up so far, it will be considered a link for the admin to delete. . i just can't believe they would go to this site with out even reading the rules, so that actually starts with the duplicate discussion thingy

Maybe I've misunderstood, I'm not sure, I don't intend to give said links or ask for said links, but rather this is a guide to mylotters and not the admin. Mylotters, I hope, will come here, see all the great answers about which discussions are repeatitive and steer clear of them!

I am not sure whether your discussion is helpful to us or not. Anyway, it is really an amazing idea. But as you have mentioned above, the repeated discussions is really an annoyance. Every time, when I have seen a new discussion and before I am ready to post a response, I will use the search tool of myLot to find that if it is a repeated discussion. In fact, I won't post any responses to these kinds of discussions. As far as I know, some newbies here may tend to start some repeated discussions. Perhaos they should read the guidelins before they are ready to start new discussions.

It used to be a requirement on mylot to read the guidelines, I believe that was one of the first things that came up on the tutorial / mandatory set up of a mylot account. Now we find way too many repeated discussions. The search feature only works if correct tags are inputted. I usually tend to put a few generic tags, but then put tags relevant to the discussion. That is to say, if you search "mr. and mrs. hellcowboy" you'll see a slew of discussions by my husband and I, but we also put releveant tags as per the discussion contents. Or, even what we want the discussion contents to obtain, or be relevant to.

The problem I see with this is that it is combining so many categories in one. How many new members are there per week? Would they know what the repeated discussions are? How about a "Best or Favorite" interest, and "myLot Earnings" (I would think the algorithm topic would also go under that one) One suggestion was about sleep, and if it was "When do you go to bed?" or "How much sleep do you get?" I will agree, but if it is about a recent development in sleep research, I would think that would be a new topic. Maybe "Sleep Science" for the latter; I'm tempted to go with "Silly Stupid Questions" for the former, but new members may not agree to that title, or recognize what it's about when they see it. How about "How much/When do you/What is?" Or have them separate: "How much do you ...," "When/What time do you ...," "What is ...." But then, all this can be avoided if one reads the title of the topic first. If it says something like "What is your favorite ...?" all I do is read the next title. And if it says something silly like "Have you ever done this?" I might get to it if nothing more interesting shows up, which is a rare event. If it is being sent to your mailbox, there are ways to limit your emails. I only get emails on responses to discussions I started and comments on my responses. When I respond to them I go into the discussions tab under "my interests" and "friends started" and start working from that.

Breaking it into categories is a nice idea, and something I may implement or I would invite others to implement in this category, that is to say, start a discussion per categorized repeated discussion. Right now I'm happy with just listing the titles or subjects here, but I'm afraid the discussion will become too long and the newer members and older members alike will not want to read every entry made!

It's difficult really to control the number of repeated topics since most don't initially check if the topic has already been set or what. I am one of those who don't frequently check first before posting for the reason that the question just popped in my head and I wanted to post it (and after posting such, then I realize there's already a bunch of us). I don't know if this is a good thing to do (doing the list) because eventually people will stop responding or this topic gets overlapped with other topics thus people won't get to read the 'list' either.

The search facility here isn't the strongest, but I think the keywords and tags are to blame really. Now do you mean that this discussion may become overlapped and overloaded with a different subject, that is to say, we veer off the intended subject and this discussion becomes null and void? I hope not, and even so I hope people will continue to read it, and ask questions. I'm always open to helping when I can!

It's a great idea let me tell ya. This is honestly why I barely come on here anymore. It takes forever to sift through the rift raff to actually find something new and exciting to actually respond to. I hope this works in time. I know it's not going to happen over night but we can always hope. As new ones come in here to the mylot world this is really something that needs to be read. Great job girl. I'm with you all the way.

I hope it becomes a success but I know it won't over night. This discussion I hope will serve as one to reference too so we don't get so many discouraged mylotters. I get discouraged as well, and there's no telling how many of the newer members get discouraged! if you think of a repeated discussion back in and say hello!

Hey SomeCowgirl! I think that your discussion is a brilliant idea if we could get the RIGHT people to pay attention to it! Unfortunately, most of the "offenders" won't even bother reading or responding because they will be too busy repeating one of those already repeated and annoying discussions! I really do hope that by now some of them "get it" because I am also sick of those "What's your favorites and the "asking the same questions! As for the "pet ones", well I'm a diehard pet lover so I never get tired of those, but that's another story! So far I think you and the other responders have alot of the "major annoying ones" covered! If I think of anymore I'll be back! But, I definitely think it is a great idea and hope it makes the digest because that is one way to get loads of people's attention so I will pass the word along!

I feel that most of us try to start new topics when we are able however I look at it this way too. We are all here for the same purposes and I feel great minds think alike. To me this is how I view mylot but I am also aware that we try to start a discussion that is new but what if someone else just started that one the same day. Happy mylotting friend and take care.

This is a very helpful discussion and hopefully people will stop by and see what the list are and try to think of other discussions that they can come up with. I do agree though that it gets annoying to see the same discussions started over and over again.

It really does so I hope by starting this discussion it helps people to see the ones that get repeated. The mylot search isn't always the best, though I feel that's because of tags and keywords as well and not so much the search engine feature itself.

It's a good effort you are starting here. THough I find it a bit too challenging for myLotter's. I agree, not everyone would read this kind of stuff and follow. People are just happy posting and posting to have their own share of the discussion. I for one would only read and respond discussions on my home

It's going to be especially hard for me to try to read everyone's responses. I tend to get bored of it, though not so much on my own discussions. We are supposed to read everything thoroughly but many don't, and I think that's one reason why repeated discussions are brought up anyway, as we don't follow the guidelines. Maybe a guidelines test would be in order, something we'd have to pass every month to continue to earn, or maybe every three months, every six months, or every year. Maybe even after so many violations.

Crying - What makes you cry? - When was the last time you cried? - What movie last made you cry? Though any scientific or psychological reason or effect should be (in my opinion, of course) be exempt.
