Does Anyone Know How To Remove....???? |
.....Old tape from a mirror? Okay my world won't end if old tape remains on my mirror but it does drive me nuts and looks tacky. I have this gigantic mirror on the one wall of my living room. Years ago, I taped up decorations on the mirror and have yet been able to get the old tape off. (Just finished cleaning the mirror tonight) I realize scraping it off isn't a good idea as it would scratch it and I"m none too keen about using any kind of chemical thing either, not with my two cats around. So if you have any suggestions I'd be glad to hear.

1. catdla1 (2710) | 1 month ago | Hi Pye! Nothing is more annoying than old tape marks. My mother used to use oven cleaner to remove the adhesive marks in the tub from those stick-on traction decals. That is a chemical though. I usually use peanut butter. For something like old tape, I'd cover it and leave it for a day or so. Then, if you have an old credit card (or something like that), you should be able to scrap it off. If there's a little glue left, reapply the peanut butter. Good luck!

pyewacket (11627) | 1 month ago | Peanut butter? LOL That's a new one on me...and yes, do have an old credit card--been meaning to cut them but now have a new use for them...
| |
catdla1 (2710) | 1 month ago | It's the oil in the peanut butter that makes it work, and it doesn't run because it's thick. Any oil would work, even WD40 which is a fish oil. Old credit cards or plastic membership cards are wonderful things. I use one as a scooper when I'm dicing onions and peppers...lol.

catdla1 (2710) | 1 month ago | Oh! And they are good for spreading frosting too.

pyewacket (11627) | 1 month ago | I'll have to remember that about using a credit card for spreading frosting...LOL

blackbriar (6293) | 1 month ago | well crap! Had I realized all these great uses for credit cards, I would of kept em all after paying them off instead of cutting em up.
| |
catdla1 (2710) | 1 month ago | Once you get into the habit of using them, you find yourself grabbing them for all sorts of new uses. Visitors probably think I'm addlebrained if they happen to look into drawers and cabinets when they visit. Of course they can't ask about them without letting me know that they've been poking around....

| wlj_2082 (8) | 1 month ago | This is what I use and it works. You need some elbow grease to go along with it at times. However, acetone is more affective. But most people don't have that around.

3. guybrush (3501) | 1 month ago | Eucalyptus oil is excellent for stickers and tape, Pye - and flyspray also often works! Good luck!
| |
| |
pyewacket (11627) | 1 month ago | Thanks I'll give the eucalyptus oil a try...but no fly spray as that's a chemical--don't even use fly spray when I have flies just a handy rolled up newspaper...I'm good at swatting...LOL

4. Ruthep (5928) | 1 month ago | you know those plastic closures that come on bread or potato bags. Not twist ties, but the flat square closures. Use that to gently scrape off the tape. It won't scratch the mirror since it is plastic.

5. babyangie27 (1208) | 1 month ago | What about peroxide? I know it has a ton of uses and shouldn't be too harmful to the cats that I know of.

pyewacket (11627) | 1 month ago | Funny I just got peroxide today...no it won't harm the kitties as I've actually used it a few times when one of my cats had a cut--he just wasn't thrilled with the fizzy part..LOL

6. Debs_place (6723) | 1 month ago | Try Goo-Gone. It is this yellow cleaner...kind of thick. Works on tape and sticky stuff. I don't think it is harsh or toxic.
| |
| |
pyewacket (11627) | 1 month ago | I'll read the ingredients of it before buying--guess I'm very over protective with my kitties...LOL

polachicago (7884) | 1 month ago | I agree about Goo-Gone...you don't use much, works on everything....including price stickers from few merchants on items you want to look good....old tape on anything.. I use only healthy solutions at home, but when using goo-gone, I take only few drops directly to the spot. It is similar to orange solvent.

7. ElicBxn (15388) | 1 month ago | actually, the silvering should be on the back side, so a soft (like a credit card) scraper wouldn't hurt the mirror but could still get the worst of the tape off
then something like Goo Gone would finish it off

8. Maggiepie (1568) | 1 month ago | Depending on what sort of tape it is, you'll need something like rubbing alcohol or benzoine (?? I think that's the stuff--someone please correct me if I have it wrong). No, don't use a razor to scratch it off. That's dangerous to you, & could scratch the glass. I recommend one of those little plastic scrapers they make just for that purpose. Try calling up a tool shop or maybe even a drugstore to get what you need.If you use that Ben-whatever stuff, be extremely careful. Use it in a well-ventilated area, & don't do it anywhere near an open flame!

9. GardenGerty (20350) | 1 month ago | Alcohol usually will help, or nail polish remover. Rub in some liquid soap and then wipe it off. Soak it really well with cooking oil and it will come off. I like Shaklee Basic H2, but would not buy a bottle just for that. It is a wonderful, non toxic cleaner, by the way, and my husband does sell it.

10. Hatley (21274) | 1 month ago | hi pyewacket what is going on onmylot tonight? I write out a response and it sat there with mylot saying wait mylot for fifteenminutes so gave up. now we shall see if mylot will send this response out. I remove tape with rubbing alcohol and then wash off the alcohol with soap and water, and the kitties should not be harmed at all. when I worked for years as a nurse's aide i learned all the lovely uses of rubbing alcohol but almost passed out one day as I had this humongous tape mess from some apparatus used in the t.b. ward. the alcohol would kill any bacteria but the fumes of doing this for a good half hour or more in a warm stuffy room made my head spin. almost killed me, and my dad was always worried I would pick up T.B. but lord we capped and gowned ourselves and masked and gloved,no danger what so ever, and I always passed the skin test and chest x ray with flying colors. my hubby too was worried but I was healthy and after I got pregnant I asked to be switched to a different ward so nobody would worry.but rubbing alcohol takes that residue off in a few minutes really.

pyewacket (11627) | 1 month ago | I wonder if rubbing alcohol and the smell would bother me...can't stand strong smells...when I used to do oil painting I had to wear a mask since I couldn't even take the smell of turpentine
