Can we really stop plagiarism on internet?

It would be very disturbing and frustrating to find out that something that you have worked on has been put up on another site without even seeking you permission.
I'm not sure about legal procedures as the internet really has no boundaries or jurisdictions, unless maybe both the offender and the owner of the content belong to the same country. Although a lot is written and done about ways of checking whether a content has been copied, there does not seem to be any single authority that can do anything about it. To make it more complicated, nothing stops the person from doing it again with a different name or even by slightly changing a few words here and there.
The options really available are to report it to the site carrying the copied content and hope that they do something about the cotent and the offender. Further if the person is earning any revenue, from placing adverts like adsense, they will ban the person.

Hi mimpi.. it really annoys to see our contents been copied in other site.. I think what you can do is report the plagiarism to the admin of that site with proof.. So that site Admin can take some action on the copier..

It is really very disturbing and disheartening thing to know if someone copies our articles and post the same on other sites. It is like stealing our hard earned money. I think there may not be some restriction on some the sites, where people submit plagiarized material. I think it would be difficult to stop this kind of piracy. Also, it would be difficult to keep a tab of the same. As there are numerous sites and new one keep coming everyday. We are just helpless, I suppose.

I don't think plagiarism will ever stop. Some people do it because they simply don't understand the laws and I have seen copies of articles that have been cut an pasted from one site to another. That is so blatant that I can only imagine that the plagiarist has no idea of copyright laws. Otherwise why do something that you know you can get sued for?

Where article are changed but otherwise contain the same information in the same order, then I think it will be extremely difficult and expensive for the original author to prove.

I have seen people thrown off writing sites like Ciao for blatent plagiarism, but I have never heard of anyone being successfully sued. I guess the authors of the original work don't have the financial backing to take on a plagiarist in court, maybe. - Derek

I really don't know, but the way I see it there should be something available when People copy somebody elses and claim it as their own

If the current trend continues, I think it is next to impossible to stop plagiarism on internet completely.

Plagiarism on internet is very common in my country, China. Most people tend to give no credits to others when they copy and paste in other websites, which is really an impolit way for others. In order to aviod such things appearing again, in my opinion, we should let people realize of the harm of plagiarism.

As far as I know, there have been no legal online procedure that can help us stop plagiarism on internet.

Oh Dear! This would be a horrible thing becasue I frankly have no idea how to counter it. I am just being my usual optimistic self and living ina world of mine.Hope you are not talking about your own experience and it si only a hypothetical situation.THere would be ways and means of dealing with this but I just do nt know.

Unfortunately I dont think that we can completely eliminate plagiarism on the internet since the internet itself is a public place. Whatever we post on the internet could be used by other people logged on to the internet as well. Yes, those things that could be copied are people's valuable intellectual property: our own original writings.

When we spot that kind of behavior happening, I dont think that there are any online regulators, or internet police about that kind of thing. That's one of the downsides of the internet. If we really want it to stop, we can make it our personal vendetta, hack or inform the site hosts/servers, and delete that thieved content. The only other possible way that I could think of to avoid that kind of behavior is to have the contents of a site copyrighted. For example, all of the content on myLot, as a whole site, is copyrighted. Meaning we can sue those,who copy and paste our posts verbatim, in real life courthouses.

Perhaps there are easier ways of a legal online plagiarism report procedure that we netizens can file. I just dont know where and how. Maybe someone out there can provide good information about this.

It is very difficult for the individual to take action against someone who has stolen their work and posted it as their own.

For the majority of people it just wouldn't be worth it financially as the ammounts of money they have potentially lost due to the theft would be outweighed by the costs of legal action.

I think that would be near to impossible. The last thing we want on the internet, too, is more policing, but there are immoral and criminal minded people who see cyberspace as the perfect place to operate, so unfortunately we have to have some kind of enforcement of rules. But it would be like swatting flies one-handed in a barnyard.
