For Those Of You Who Are Living Alone....Do You Find You've Gotten....

...Lazier about cooking? I happen to be a very good cook. I can cook just about any kind of food, any nationality but specialize in French, Italian, Mexican and Oriental cuisine. Now when my grandmother and mother were alive, it was like a virtual French restaurant since I'd be making crepes, souffles, quiches etc...or Italian like homemade pizza, lasagna, manacotti, and so forth. I'd even made homemade breads, pies, flans--you name it. But now that I live alone I have to confess I've gotten a tad lazy about cooking. Oh, sure I still cook, but now very simple foods without much fuss--the only time I go all out are special occasions like my birthday in which I make the very first French dish I ever cooked over 25 years ago (Beouf Bourgnignon) and is a tradition for me or holidays, like Thanksgiving that is coming up. But even with Thanksgiving coming up next week, I'm thinking of having my Beouf Bourgnignon since it's kind of dumb getting a whole turkey (or even just he breast meat) when there would be so much leftover. Although just might get something simple like a chicken breast so I can still fix up the homemade stuffing, etc. to go with it.
I have to admit I kind of miss cooking the way I used to even though it's now just me, and to cook the way I used to I would have too much leftover..For instance when I made my Beouf Bourgnignon for my birthday dinner yesterday I halved the recipe and I STILL have a lot leftover. And yes could probably freeze the leftovers but some foods just plain don't freeze well
So anyway...for those who are alone, do you fuss with cooking? Or are you like me and have gotten just a tad lazy and maybe only fix something special for an "occasion" or Holiday?

Happy Belated Birthday, Pye! I hope you had a good one with many more to follow.
I think that cooking for others is always a lot more enjoyable than just cooking for ourselves. I lived alone for a long time. Even after I had my kids and was divorced, I almost always cooked two different dinners, one for the kids and one for myself. (Trying to get a 4-year-old to eat broccoli or peas is like asking them to write a Master's thesis! It just ain't gonna happen. LOL)
I have to admit that I hardly ever got fancy when I lived by myself, except on special occasions like you mentioned. Christmas dinner was always at my house and I'd spend 3 days cooking that meal! I was in Heaven! My sister loved my Country Chicken and Dumplings and I would make that for her on her birthday every year. That took 5 hours to make and I relished every minute of it.
I've always loved cooking and experiment with new things whenever I get the chance. That's not often these days unless my sons come over to visit. (They've learned to like broccoli and peas. LOL) My husband is a stick-in-the-mud about the "tried-and-true" foods he grew up with. He doesn't like to try new things. To give you an idea, whenever we go to a Chinese restaurant, he orders Beef with Broccoli, never anything else. So, cooking for him is rather boring.
You know, I made a chicken dinner that I thought was my own idea, at least until I saw a recipe for Chicken Cacciatore in a recipe book. I was just playing around with it, adding this and that, and loved it. When I saw that I was actually making chicken cacciatore, I had to laugh because I probably would have screwed it up if I had been following a recipe.

I sometimes think it would make sense for me to cook the way I used to, that is make large portions then freeze a lot of it, that way if I'm feeling lazy and don't want to cook, just take it out of the freezer and re-heat it, but I seem to find spending so much time in front of the computer...LOL
I'm going to have to find out if one of my recipes I make which I THINK is my own invention might turn out to be a real recipe...
Speaking of boring cooking. There were so many foods that I loved but my mother hated so never got them...funny now that she's gone I can get them but just don't...LOL...old habits die hard I guess right?

I wonder how many people there are out there making their own chicken/tomato recipe that could be called chicken cacciatore? That might be an interesting discussion!1 person likes this

When I lived alone I did get lazy for periods of time. Ate out alot. But I could also cook good meals and freeze part of it and have it on hand. Turkey leftovers have become an American past time. There are so many things you can do with it. When I had my first Turkey sandwich with cranberries and cream cheese I fell inlove. So many different things. I guess it depends my mood. When I am in the mood to cook I try to cook alot and freeze it. Now I live with my daughter I can't do that so I let her worry about which usually means I end up worrying about it. I just go out!

Hi pyewacket! You know, I really never loved cooking eversince but when I want to eat something and my taste buds are craving for it, I do cook. When I cook, it's plenty enough to have some of it to my sister, my daughter and my nieces. We live in the same house but we cook separately. Both my sister and my daughter are already married so they cook for their own families. Sometimes, we share our food to one another. My husband is away right now so there's no pressure on me to cook. For me, cooking for him is just mere obligation. Now that he's not around ( he works abroad ), somehow I felt relieved for I am really so lazy to cook. I just eat bread or any kind of food available or just order food from restaurants near our place. I also dine out from time to time. I love eating but not cooking haha.

Yes, me too pyewacket! I'd rather watch television and spend my time in front of my computer than cook. Apparently, we seemed encouraged to cook if there are people who's going to eat, appreciate and enjoy what we had cooked. It's quite an obvious reason that, we are happy to satisfy and please our loved ones with our cooking. Happy mylotting!

I'm just an average cook but it has happened to me too. At 1st I would cook but then I found out that the supermarket near my home makes 50% price down all saturdays, and that supermarket's frozen food is really tasty, so I began feeding on frozen food and I just prepare sometimes some rice or pasta to eat with the frozen food.

I sure wish my supermarkets would cut prices in half for frozen meals, then I'd get them more often

Actually what I do is usually half the recipes I do cook--either that or just freeze the leftover, then so convenient to just reheat again

My boyfriend always calls it "the miracle supermarket". I feel super lucky for having something like that near :)
For someone that's a good cook like you maybe you can try to learn new recipes that involve preparing a small quantity.

I guess Im on my own now that mu ex husband and I separated 4 weeks ago. Well, not quite alone, I have my 16 year old daughter.
When huby and his 2 kids were here, the majority of the time I was really into cooking. Like you, I enjoy cooking. I wadnt able to try many different ethnic dishes like you did, because there wewre too many variables in my family. My daughter is a vegan. My ex hubby had to eat gluten free, low salicylate and diabetic food.
To say the least I became very inventive with suitable recipes.
Now that it's just my daughter and I, cooking her food is completely separate to mine.
So I have decided to lash out with cooking. I can now use mushrooms, capsicums, onions, thai herbs. I's just great. I am trying to come up wiuth more creative, low fat dishes. So me lving "alone" it has been a bonus for cooking, as I really look forward to trying different foods.

That at least is one bonus by living alone now...my mother couldn't tolerate hot, spicy foods while I loved it....now with her gone, I can really spice things up if I wish

I would like to wish you a belated Happy Birthday, pyewacket, and, yes, I think we do tend to not give our all to cooking when we live alone. I found myself in that situation when I moved out alone several years ago, because even though the children were long-since grown, my house was always filled with grandkids and others to cook for. Once I was on my own I at first tended to cook more than I needed, so I decided to compromise: I cooked two days out of the week and ate leftovers or snack foods the rest of the time.

Who wants to mess up the kitchen? I hardly cook for myself...heat up tv dinners or other convience foods....I do ocassionally cook then make a big batch and freeze part of it for later....when the kids come I do enjoy cooking.....but for me? Nope....don't want the mess.

I'd probably get frozen dinners as well, but I find in the long run they're too expensive so do cook from scratch...I just don't fuss as much anymore and do more simple meals for the most part

I live alone and yes I am lazy when it comes to cooking. I make a lot of frozen or packaged stuff. I also make pizza with those ready made crusts. I however do a lot of cooking at me job, so I really don't want to cook at home. I will cook Christmas dinner as I'm having my kids and grandkids come over.
I really do miss cooking for someone other than myself like I used to when hubby was alive or when my daughter and grandkids lived with me a few years back.

I hate to cook but I do it because my husband is even worse at it than I am !I find it such a thankless task; hours of slaving over a hot stove only for it to be consumed in twenty minutes followed by an hour of cleaning up! We always utilize left overs, either for lunch the next day or the dog gets a treat! When my husband is away my daughter and I will survive with eggs on toast, TV dinners or pasta with butter and parmesan cheese, I miss him but love not having to cook much!
When I lived alone, before I got married I lived on Lean Cuisines; they weren’t a bad meal and not too expensive because it was just me.

I think it does happen. I live alone for more that 2 years now and my life style became simpler. I wish to have a real food, but since I run out of time and prefer to have rest, I always cook for easy cooking dishes. I guess, independent people concerns much about time. Thus, we are satisfied with filling our stomach than to cook something we crave and like when in fact the cooking and preparing process eats our time.

I can't cook like you can. No way, no how, no chance. But I do cook for myself, real meals. With money how it is, the situation really dictates that I cook for myself. It's cheaper, and most of all, I eat healthier when I cook for myself and don't order out. I don't normally make really big meals, but I do make enough for leftovers. Leftovers are a single person's best friend! hee hee

hi pyewacket as a diabetic who ate alone as her son worked odd hours when we were still in an apartment I loved to cook, and experiment and make my favorites as I had to customize my meals anyway to keep my blood sugar on an even keel. so I did have
a lot
of fun. occasionally when I felt lazy I would buy some high quality frozen dinners but not that often. I loved to make pasta dishes with bertolli's plus pasta as it had a lot of protein in it that did not shoot up my blood sugar. I miss that now as I am fed whatever is on Gold Crests menu.

I have gotten very lazy with cooking! I am great now heating a pizza in the over or eating up leftovers in the microwave I get from work! I don't even cook for the holidays! I go to spend time with the family and they are ok that I don't make anything! I usually bake a loaf of banana or pumpkin bread, though. If I didn't live alone I would be doing so real cooking! Not like you Pye but I would do my favorite recipes!
