We have a small one and I defrost it when it gets pretty empty and it looks bad Hate it when people drop ice in the bottom ya left up the top and I am almost on my head when getting the water out and getting washed and dried out.So it is every few months that I do it.

i have this usual schedule of defrosting my freezer, once every three weeks. for me, i dont wait for my freezer to get thick ice build up before defrosting it for it prevent the freezer from cooling. i want it also to be regularly clean and hygenic.

Im a bit naughty with defrosting my freezer. I dont have any set time. I just deforst it when it gets to the urgent phase & food is not properly freezing.
That's what happened to me about 2 months. I noticed that the bread wasnt frezing properly & the door wouldnt close.
So I began the longer process of defrosting. Off went the power.
I boiled hot water, poured it into three saucepans, and these I plced in the freezer. This greatly assists the defrosting.
But by bit water dropped on the floor. This was taking houyrs. As soon as the water cooled down in the saucepans, I added more hot water.
Eventually I used a knife to scrape away bits of ice that were copming loose. I had to do this quite a lot.
It took hours to finish the defrosting process, I Will never let it get that bad again.

[b]Be careful with that knife, Jenny--especially if you're lucky & have actual freon in your freezer, because those freezer walls are thinner than you may think. If you nick one, the freon will leak out, & it's illegal to buy more!
Try using my hair dryer trick to loosen the ice. Much faster, less messy, and safer!

I think newer freezers are made where they don't need defrosting. We have two freezers, one that is attached to the fridge and another stand alone freezer. The Stand Alone has a lot of ice build up though it sometimes leaks so I think that takes care of that a little bit. We haven't defrosted it since we got it, and even then I think we just left it outside to clean it out. Lol, it's the inlaws freezer, we really had nothing to do with the process of bringing it in etc.

My freezer defrosts itself but years ago I had one that needed it done periodically. I would defrost it when the ice started to build up, which could take anywhere from a few months to longer if the kids stayed out of it.

Holy, I haven't heard of defrosting a freezer since I was a little girl and my mom used to do it with out freezer. I believe that most of the freezers now a days do it themselves and I am thankful for that because I now from watching my mom do it that that is nothing that I would want to spend my time doing LOL

I don't have to defrost my freezer at all because it's a frost free kind. However, when I was renting an apartment, I had to defrost the freezer every now and then, not too often. I hated having to do that but did it because I had to. The ice would build up so much that I had no room to put my food. Thank God for frost free freezers that we have these days!

[b]You just made me realize I have yet another blessing for which I should be thankful: my frost-free fridge. Those are, far as I know, pretty much all companies make any more, here, though I could be wrong, of course. I just know I haven't seen the old style for ages, even while living in the slums!
When I did have to defrost one, it was most convenient to not let them build up so much, of course, but if I had to, it was pretty easy to turn a hair dryer on the ice, & let the run-off collect in the empty crisper drawers at bottom. Whatever else came out, towels would take care of.

No. We have a soda box in it and when ever the soda box reads we clean it out. It defrosts itself, we just clean it. It is a marvelous contraption really. I was amazed at first. Had never had one before. It was one of those 'what will they think of next' moments.

Well I have one of those self defrosting freezer so I dont need to defrost .Luckily too because I am not the best homemaker that ever existed and I am sure I would forget to do that if it was up to me .If I had one of those types of freezers though I dont know if I would defrost for christmas because I am a man who does house work when it was absolutely necessary and when I felt in the mood for it so unless christmas was a time when I felt in the mood then it may not be done

We don't have to defrost our freezers, thank goodness. Neither the freezer from the fridge nor our upright freezer develop frost so we are in good shape with that. I think we would have problems if we had to defrost either of them because we keep so much frozen food and meats that if we had to take the time to defrost we would actually have food loss in the long run. If we were to ever find ourselves in the situation that we had to start defrosting though, I think that I would pick a specific time of the year when I was going to do my defrosting.

I used to defrost my freezer on a weekly basis. I want it to be always fresh and clean. It's part of our general cleaning during weekends!

I remember those kind of freezers, it has been a long time since I had used one of them. In USA, you get freezers that won't build ice like that so its not necessary to defrost.

I haven't defrosted a fridge for more than thirty years! Thankfully, I have a frost-free fridge and freezer, so that is one job I can forget.
I do like to empty my fridge every week or two and wipe it out, making sure there are no spills or leaks and nothing forgotten in there. I don't use my freezer as much as I used to and I very seldom clean it out.

This is something that I do on a regular basis! My freezer tends to build up so much ice so quickly and so I defrost my freezer once per month on the first Sunday of each month. This makes things so much easier and the ice buildup isn't so bad then. I have one of those small fridge/freezers which has a small ice box at the top, that's my little freezer!! I'm guessing you have one of those trunk freezers? Well, I would love to have a frost free freezer, that would make things so much easier. Andrew

am not really sure whether i like to defrost a lot but mine is every week. i find that those in the freezer tend to get spoiled if the ref's setting is in the normal or plain cold mode. so i switched to the maximum mode and has everything in the ref cold and nice. so ice sets in quite a lot so there is a need to defrost every week. i really do agree that too much ice slows down a ref's cooling ability. once it's past it's mark then i agree that one has to defrost otherwise every ounce of cold goes to waste.

My freezer freezes easily so i defroze it every time i see ice building up the insides of it, sometimes the door can't be close so tightly because of the ice build up that is why i need to de froze every once a month or if it's a must.

We have a No Frost freezer so no need. We used to do that before back when we still using our old freezer although we are spending more in electricity but its alright we dont need to do the hassle of defrosting our freezer. What i dont like is it is so long before it actually freeze. Sometimes you have to wait over 6 hours beore it reach the maximum temperature. Price to pay for being lazy to defrost the freezer.

I only tend to defrost my freezer once a year. As long as I keep the freezer full I don't get too much ice build up.I usually defrost my freezer in spring as I have used up everything I grew and froze from the year before then. Its ready to be filled up again by the new years crop.
