He is making sure I do not get that piano even after he is dead  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover 3 years ago

All right here is the situation. When I was young, I took piano lessons. I was not like some getting bored, although I also wanted to play the organ as well but at that time Digital pianos had not been invented yet. I got up to Grade 9 in the Conservatory lessons they have here in Canada, but at 14 my mother died and my father sold the piano. So for all these years, no piano, could not afford one and then when i married my husband would not let me get one and objected when a friend gave me a spinet organ for doing some typing for her. Now I am 66, he is dying of als, and he says even after he is gone, I will not live long enough because most widows die 10 years after their husbands (my opinion, their husband's made sure the children got money and after a time, the wife did not get that much so she gave up, did not take care of herself, and died) He also says because I am borderline diabetic and overweight that I will drop dead of a heart attack, so why buy a piano? Now I planned to get a digital piano rather then a regular one, because I can also play it as an organ as well.
Now he has put a charge on the credit card that is in both of our name and since I have a bank account at that bank, if he dies before January, I will be stuck. So he is making doubly sure that I will not get the piano because then I will have to get out the savings I had and the whole work will be wiped out in paying for those van repairs.
Now do you really think that he is making sure I will not get the piano after he dies or is that just my imagination?

I did check to see where he got that information about widows dying ten years after. I could not find anything. I can understand them dying the same day or a week later, because they were so much in love they could not live without him, but ten years? He also thinks that when men retire they die 3 years later. Puts a different angle on his als. I heard that it was from anthrax, and he did live on a farm, and also I thought it was a disease to make sure that people of low German descent die at their three score years and ten, but now it happens after retirement so if he kept on working, he would not have gotten it? Sometimes statistics do not make sense.

I have to sneak it in the house. I will have enough after he dies, but he says with my widow's pension that is 65 percent of the CN PENSION, and my Old Age Security, there will not be enough to pay for the taxes, the cable, internet, phone (I am getting rid of one of the internet connections because when he dies, there will only be one computer. but that is just $10 less) And I will probably sell one of the Tvs but we do not need it because the cable cost will be the same. And there will be just me and I usually turn the heat down at night and can live with a lower temperature during the winter.
But I do not intend to die ten years or within ten years unless Christ appears in clouds in the sky and we have no idea when HE is coming.
So I will get that digital piano - possibly soon after the funeral.

good for you suspenseful good for you. get the darned piano and play something sweet to melt his mean old heart.

I will get it. It will not be so soon, but at least he found that digital pianos are not that expensive.

I am also practicing playing the organ so he has no excuse of saying that I would never use it. Of course, it is hard to reach the pedals sometimes and with a digital piano it would be easier. But it is hard now to save for it because I am paying for groceries as well.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Lakota12 (23189)   ranked 138 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

yup I hear ya!

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

Yup, and he really fooled me big time. My husband, and my friends decided to play this trick on me. Janni and I went grocery shopping and decided to go to the Bible Mission Second Hand Shop, while Ed and my husband were going to (so I thought) go to the CN and look at the trains, or see friends at work, Home Depot, you know guy stuff. So we get a cell phone call to meet us at Smitty's and we have lunch there. And after that, since I know my husband likes to follow me around in the grocery store with his power wheelchair that can get up to ten miles an hour. (i do not walk that fast). So what happens that Janni suggests that we shop at the Bible for Missions Second Hand Shop,(that is not wheelchair accessible)and since there is a Superstore there, go there for groceries instead. That means that my husband and Ed are free to do men stuff like browsing at Home Depot and stuff like that.
So after shopping, Janni and I get home and guess what, there besides the big screen Tv is a brand new piano!
Yes, they really fooled me big time! happy

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

The funny thing was the day before I was looking at the empty space and I was seeing "piano." Now I had dreams of being in a piano shop quite a number of times, but I just thought it was wishful thinking. Also it is a Yamaha Upright and when you open the top, it sounds like a grand piano. Now all i have to do is to find some music to practice. I have all this spinet organ music and my song books. I found some on the net, but unfortunately my printer is not that good, and my husband's printer is not as good a shape.
I guess the next thing on the agenda is getting new printers. But no my HP, will switch to Canon. Oh and my husband might need a lap top adapted so he can communicate. (hmm thinking - I wonder if they can concert macs?)lol

myLot reputation of 96/100. Lakota12 (23189)   ranked 138 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

I dont know anything about macs.
ANd not sure but isnt all sheet music have the same notes?

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

They all have the same notes, but it seems that the Macs were mainly designed for creative people that are not good programmers. But i have to get the ink for the printer, so will go out Friday evening and hope the cartridges are not try, because I sure do not want to spend $80 to get new cartridges.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Lakota12 (23189)   ranked 138 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

Wow thats high for ink!
Altho my dauhter pays a good price for hers too .
Mine dont cost all that much.
and I found out not to leave printer on for it drys the ink out had never thought of it before but I kept running out of ink before I thought I should now I know lololol

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

We had to pay a little over $32 to get a black and a colored refill. And my husband's black cartridge has been refilled a few times and the next time, we may have to get a new cartridge. My brother-in-law who lives in Prince Edward Island was telling us about Canon. Unlike Hp,they have separate cartridges for red, blue, and yellow so that if the red runs off, for instance, you do not have to get a cartridge refilled when there is still plenty of yellow for instance. I was thinking of getting one, but I want to get the new lap top first. I want to print some music sheets for playing on the piano and I also want to get a printer that accommodates the size they use for the regular sheet music, but I suppose the only place I could get one is from a music supply store or from near a university.
There is not much except the regular printers where I live.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Lakota12 (23189)   ranked 138 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

that would be a big printer I think to hold all those cartraqges.
My daughter has a new cannon and it only has 2.
and runs out fast think it cost her close to $60 every time she haqs to buyu them and she needs it for her Avon sales and things!

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

My brother-in-law has a business so he needs a big printer. I do not think it is one of those all in ones. I think it is sort of like it just does printing and that is all. I would think it would need a separate scanner to print those legal sized papers. I have one of those all in ones and it seems to be just for writing articles as it runs out of ink all the time.

I had a hard time with the left hand. I was good at chords, but I wanted to play like Bach and go all over the place. My dad was the same way, he was good at learning by ear. He played the harmonica.

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

I intend to. I just cannot afford to get it now. It is just that I told him in a year or so that I will get it, and then he comes up with the ten years after I die, I will be dead. Besides I have to play perfectly to get it, and I also told him that before I could practice when visiting my friends, but with him, I cannot. I have just started to use the spinet organ again. I could not use it before because it was in the computer room and it bothered him. So part of the reason I am not that good is his fault and he does not realize it yet.
He is just making excuses, and the latest one is that we have to give some money to our sons, get gifts for our friends, and expensive ones at that.

Perhaps because he is scared of dying and what is happening to him he is lashing out at you and being mean. We often say the meanest things to those we love the most because we know how to push the right buttons. Don't take anything he says to heart. Even if he does mean it it doesn't follow that _you_ have to believe it.

It might be the case that many widows die within ten years of the spouse but that could be one of those marvellous "statistics" that are easy to trot out. You could live another thirty years. Remember what Mark Twain said about statistics.

Can you speak to your bank manager or an adviser about untangling your finances so you aren't stuck with the debts?

Put your thoughts of a piano on hold for a while and just get through the next few months and then assess the situation when it is sensible to do so and you can know for definite one way or the other and go from there.

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

I think he is a bit scared and he wants to remain in control. I do not have enough money for the piano right now. I am saving for a Macpro computer and that is expensive, and I am almost there. So that is the first priority. I will not have enough for at least six months anyway, but if he dies sooner, if the budget is all right, I can get it sooner. I just have to know what I will need. I hope he does not die until after tax time as then we will be getting a lot back on income tax.

hi suspenseful is his ALS making him have some kind on emotional or mental problems because I think thats just damned meanness on his part. why in the world if he really loves you would he not want you to be happy with a piano? surely he knows it would really make you so happy, what is with him, those statistic he threw at you are not even really correct, and what is more diabetics even if overweight do not all die young look at me I am diabetic and 83 and plan on living a few more years.
Suspenseful you go after that piano, and say to yourself, I owe it to me, I will get it even if it upsets his royal highness.also tell him most time statistics usually lie anyway. do not let him make a floor mat out of yourself. stick up for you, get that piano for you any way you can. look if I had a lot of money I would send you enough to just buy it outright but alas I dont. my heart goes out to you. you get that piano for you.you are taking care of yourself and no you will not drop dead of a heart attack.

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

I could not find those statistics. They may have been invented, so that means that I am going to get the piano anyway. Also this time of year, they do have contests and often one of the prizes is a piano so what happens if I happen to win one? I mean that us usually a baby grand and i DO not want that. A digital piano is much easier as long as it sounds like a grand.

Suspense, I think it's time you called the card company & canceled the order, since you share the card, because you have equal rights! Get the charge denied, drop your name off of it, cut up your card & get a different, separate card. I'd do that in a heartbeat, as he's telling you he thinks you'll probably drop dead, or if not, he will, & stick you with a bill you didn't agree to!

I'd check with Legalzoom.com or Legal Aid or somebody, as this is highly immoral & wrong in general! What was so all-fired important he's willing to put you in debt for it? Is it something he really needs? Or is it just what he wants (& from everything you've said, he always puts his needs & desires first!)? If he's likely to die before he can use it, it's very hypocritical of him to think it's not equally fair for you to have something you want, even if you do only get to enjoy it for a short time! Heck, even the young have no guarantees of living through the night. NONE of us do! You have to grab life when & where you can, or know the bitterness of long regrets, & the haunting thought, "If only..."

Suspense, talk to a lawyer. This guy is making life miserable for you, & apparently it's out of sheer spite! Why do you keep putting up with his contrary ways? You should at least contest the purchase, by telling the credit card company what he has done was not done with your knowledge or permission! Maybe it's time for a competency hearing. You must not allow this man to throw you into debt!!! Grrr! angry

We did get the credit bill today and it had a zero balance and the next statement will not be due until February. He is going to transfer the money over to the bank account in January so there will be enough to pay it and since I have already paid more then enough I can do it. I do not want to get another card and cancel my card because that would mean I would not get as high a credit limit as the credit limit on this is $20,000 whereas the credit limit on one just for myself would be $3,000 and even less if he dies before I change it.
He does need the van. That is the whole trouble and the medical stuff, but he sure did not need that tv set.

I agree with Maggiepie. Is there any way to cancel the charges and get yourself off that card? And then that way, at least you don't have to worry about that extra debt when he is gone. Blessings - I hope you do eventually get your piano!

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

There is no way. I put some charges on it and paid them off right away. And we did get the credit card bill and it had a zero balance. The trouble is if I cancel the card, and it has already gone through and get one in my name alone, that would mean that I will have only a $3,000 or less credit limit whereas now we have a $20,000 credit limit. That means if I wanted to use it to buy a computer or even the piano later on, I would be unable to do it. I know I can get a digital one for $1,000 but I want a digital one that will play like a grand piano and that probably will run about $3,000.

I think your husband is a control freak who's just come across the one thing he can't control - his own mortality. So he's trying to control your life after he dies, not so much by running up the debt, because I'm sure you can find a way around that, but by killing off your confidence and self esteem so you think that what you want to do is hopeless and unachieveable. It isn't. You have something to look forward to, while he's staring death in the face. Tell him, dying or not, you're not prepared to put up with his behaviour. I'd be out of there pronto, but only you can decide if you stay or go. But whatever you do, hold on to your dream.

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19607)   ranked 3 out of 2,051 in music lover  3 years ago

Well I started practicing on the organ again. And if he says that I have to play better before I can get a piano, I will do it. I already did it with my singing. He did not want to sing, so I started practicing more and then I said I was going to sing solo in the concert and I did. I have no intention of dying baring the second coming.

The trouble is he does all this just before we go to bed at night. During the day, I can talk about the piano, etc. and he would not mind, but at night he shoots up all these statistics that were probably doctored. I asked him what was the reason these women did ten years after their husbands and when he was almost asleep I said ït was probably suicide." I bet that is what it was. They all killed themselves, but the statistics did not mention that.

I intend to get it. I figure if I work hard enough, and watch my budget that in a year or less I will have it and if I am lucky while he is still alive. We did see a digital piano on the Price is Right and we both thought at least $5000, but it was just under $2000 and he was thinking that a digital piano would be all right, but I think he was considering one of those electronic pianos. But it would the same as exchanging the spinet organ for that. Since it is equal to one that has 61 keys.
Right now I cannot afford it, but there have been a couple of pianos that were in a draw. You had to buy a dvd but that was all right and well I could not even enter those draws because even if the piano was free, well he would want me to sell it and get the money for it. At least that is what I thought. Oh I intend to live a very long time.
