A Great Christmas Gift...  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 95/100. twoey68 (10563) 3 years ago

I wanted to share one of my Christmas gifts here b/c I think it's a really neat gift. Back in 1996 (13 years ago) I made a cross stitch picture for my stepdad's mom. It was a picture of an angel sitting on clouds and had a poem with it that went something like this:

Above my bed,
Where no one can see,
My guardian angel,
Watches over me.

The picture hung over her bed from the day I gave it to her. Well, she passed away several months ago and one of her sons took everything she owned and sold it off. It turns out that my stepdad snagged the picture before his brother took everything and he gave it to me as a Christmas gift. He said he thought it should come back to who it came from. I think it's so great that something I made so long ago and that touched someones life has come back to me. By the way, I intend to clean it and hang it in my home :)

Have you ever gotten something back years after you gave it? Did you ever make something that really touched someone else's life? Do you think this was a great gift?

Oh Twoey, that made me cry with happiness for you to get that treasured gift gifted back to you. I am so happy that it did not get sold off to someone who might not appreciate it as much as you do. I can't say I have ever got anything back that I can remember.

myLot reputation of 95/100. twoey68 (10563)  3 years ago

It's terrible that he sold everything off b/c I know there were other things that she would have liked passed down to her granddaughter...oh well, the almighty dollar rules some ppl.

That is a really great Christmas gift. I can't think of anything I've gotten back that I've given, but all those that have passed away have been before I gave gifts (when I was too young to have a job) or that I didn't give gifts gifts too but rather paid for food on a couple of occasions...

Hope you had a really great Christmas.

THAT is so touching, twoey!! My MY!! It must have moved you very much I am sure!

I gave my father a pullover sweater one year that ended up coming back to me when dad died. We were the same size so I can wear it now, although I save it for special occasions. I so don't want to take away the great significance, but when I have it on and pass by a mirror and see my reflexion, it is a but shocking because it is like seeing my pappa, we were so much alike in features!"

yes, So I do understand what this kind of a gift means to you also!! Thanks for sharing this with us!!

myLot reputation of 95/100. twoey68 (10563)  3 years ago

It really did move me...I never expected to see it again and hadn't really thought about it till I got it. It really was a great thing he did.

Ah fjaril, getting sentimental are we. I think both of us are clones. We always seem to think alike.Of course, I have never given a gift to my father, but always regretted the fact, that I did not give him one.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

aaah but ramesh..you need not have a regret at all on this point. YOU, as I have met here, are a precious friend I always look forward to seeing here.

Your father also must have been so happy and proud also of you ..There is not a gift in the world no matter how shiney or expensive than the gift of you as a son to your father..yes, you gave him a wonderful gift just being you and being his!.. and every day you live and are kind to another, you continue to do him the greatest honour..THOSE are the real gifts, even if we like to see the material, the ones from the heart and soul are the greatest.

This gift was the best. You will never look at it without remembering both his Mom and him. What a nice considerate man to know how much this could mean to you and go to the effort to get it for you. The whole thing is a great blessing.

hi twoey thats a wonderful story and its nice that he thought to give it back to you after it had touched other lives so nicely.
Mine is the other way around. when my son was probably in the fifth grade he made a picture of a photo of himself a nd his little sister when he was four and she was three. it was artfully torn around the photo then put on a solid wood block, and sealed over with a picture hanger on the back. I had kept it all these years, I had it when I first came here to Gold Crest a year ago and when my first roommate died they moved me to a different room.well I went back to check if they had got all my belongings and was sickened to see something wooden in the trash can. so I rescued that picture that meant so much to me. you see toey that little girl of mine died when she was eight and that was the only picture I had of her that was not in storage. she would have been 48 last year so its very special to me. to think the caregivers thought it was trash is in my eyes unforgivable and to think I was lucky enough to rescue it,well I was just really thrilled.

myLot reputation of 95/100. twoey68 (10563)  3 years ago

It's great that you managed to save it. I can't believe they threw it out but maybe they thought it was your roommates. Regardless at least it was saved.

Thank you!!! You gave me a reason to smile!!! I can't say it was something that I made that was as personal as your cross stitch picture. I moved to Washington DC back in 1969 to work on Capitol Hill. I wanted to do something special with my first paycheck so I looked & looked for something special. It didn't necessarily have to be for myself. I was just about to give up when I saw an ad in the newspaper & I rushed out to buy it. I found the most perfect Mother's Ring. As it turned out, my Grandmother had 6 grandchildren. My next dilemma was how to arrange the stones so it would be a pretty ring & still symbolize her family. I began to think of ways to make the stones special. After quite a bit of thinking, I realized that if I had them arranged from the oldest to the youngest that every other stone would be the same color as each of her children had 2 of her grandchildren. The oldest of each set of grandchildren were born in February. Her oldest daughter had the first 2 grandchildren, then her son had the middle 2 grandchildren. Finally her baby daughter had the final 2 grandchildren. So the ring turned out February, March, February, October, February, December. It turned out to be a quite lovely ring. My Grandmother NEVER took that ring off once she put it on because she said she was afraid she'd lose it & it couldn't be replaced. She wore that ring every day until she died in 1990. She was in a nursing home near my Aunt's home when she died. My Aunt had gone to be with her as the nursing home had called her to say it was probably her last day on earth. My grandmother called my Aunt into her room when she was getting really weak. She took off the ring & handed it to my Aunt...telling her she wanted the ring returned to me with her thanks for such a lovely gift. I fel soooo honored that she made sure I got the ring back with such lovely words. I put it on my finger & it has NEVER left my finger since that day. This ring has ALWAYS held a special meaning for me & your story reminded me of my Grandmother giving me back the ring I had made just for her & ALL the special moments that went with it!!! I think it was VERY special of your stepdad to make sure you got your priceless gift back. That was very thoughtful of him!!! happy thumbup

myLot reputation of 95/100. twoey68 (10563)  3 years ago

That sounds really special...I can see why you treasure it so much. Things like that should be handed down through the family.

I'm planning on passing it down to my niece when I'm gone. She just turned 12 in October & I don't know if I can get her to understand how really special this ring is!!!She was born about 7 years after my Grandmother died so I fear she won't hold the undying love that I have had. I do plan on telling her the stories that goes along with this ring in hopes she will develope an attachment to it before I'm gone!!!

That's so touching! No, I've never made a gift for anyone, though I've really wanted to do the same as your hobby (like knitting). Reasons vary, partly from lack of time, and from not having anyone in my life who'd appreciate made-up gifts over store-bought ones. (For that matter, I need more folks around me who'd truly appreciate the gifts I give them, since they're really well thought-out, in my opinion).

Have a blessed Christmas season, twoey.

myLot reputation of 95/100. twoey68 (10563)  3 years ago

I'm thinking of doing a big cross stitch picture for each person in my family for Christmas next year but if I do, I'll have to start soon b/c they take some time to do.

I cross stitch too! I'm working on one that I've been working on for years and probably will finish it in the coming year. It's very tedious and is why it's taking me so long to finish besides taking breaks in between. I made one for a couple that were friends of ours and they ended up splitting up and the husband was so angry that he threw away all his wife's things without even opening the boxes to see what was in them. The cross stitch that I made for them was in one of those boxes. I had hoped he'd send it back to me but it's gone now.

I did give my grandmother a set of porcelain babies that one could hang on the wall or Christmas tree if they wanted to. One was a little girl and the other was a boy. When my grandmother passed away, I got them back and now they're in my curio cabinet.

myLot reputation of 95/100. twoey68 (10563)  3 years ago

What picture are you working on? I find that if I put on a movie that I can just listen to and spend just 2 hours in the morning (while Hubby is sleeping) stitching, I get quite a bit done. It's a very relaxing hobby.

I've attached a picture so you can see it. It's just a copy of the cover picture. It's a 16 count which is so darned hard on my eyes. I vowed to never get another one and no smaller than a 14 count. I stitch when I can. It doesn't bother hubby when I do it, in fact, he enjoys watching me stitch away. lol Being hearing impaired, even with hearing aids, I still have to "read" the tv screen to see what's being said because it doesn't come clear enough for me. Maybe if I took the speaker down off the wall that's behind the couch and put it closer to me, I could do that. Hmmmm, it seems that you've given me an idea! lol

BTW, the picture isn't the greatest and I can rescan it if you'd like, just let me know! happy

myLot reputation of 95/100. twoey68 (10563)  3 years ago

That is a pretty one...I've seen it before and probably have the chart too. Have you looked into some kind of headphones or something for the tv. Some models have them. Hubby doesn't mind me stitching but I find when he's awake, I'm constantly either getting up to do something or he's wanting to talk to me and I can't concentrate on the stitching.

There is one now and we bought it but since our tv is so far away, it didn't work and we had to take it back. We're kind of waiting for the technology to catch up with us so it will work when we go to get it again. Heck, I waited for 40 years for technology to catch up with my type of hearing loss (nerve damage which I was born with) and make a hearing aid to fit my needs and I'd actually and want to wear so waiting a few more years for the headset, won't be a problem. lol
