would you want to live in a castle? |
| |
| i am in a country full of the things, you can't go anywhere without seeing two or three on the way. now most of them are rather old and while visitors like going round them nobody lives in them. so would you take on one of these castles and live in it? if so what kind of castle would you like? in my case i would rather not live in a castle - they are cold, don't have either double glazing or central heating, the older ones were built when people tended to be shorter even than me, and they are probably full of ghosts . but that is just me - i'd like to know your feelings... | | | | | |

| | I don't think I would like to live in a castle, at least not in these conditions they were originally built. I've heard that there is quite cold inside them, humidity levels are high and there is very few light in the rooms. These are quite unhealthy conditions to live in. I would agree living in a castle only if it would be equipped with heating, electricity and comfortable furniture. I think that would be a nice experience anyway! | | | | | | |

| | you go for a modernised castle then? very sensible. i would actually spend one night in an uninhabitable one but not by myself (i'd be scared), not in the winter and not for more than one night (too uncomfortable) | | | |

| | Hi Judith, go down the Rhine on a train (the Intercity, not the ICE route) from Cologne to Frankfurt, or on the other side of the river between Frankfurt and Koblenz via RĂĽdesheim, you get a chance to see, from a distance, a load of castles. Many of them now are done up with all mod cons (OK, that kills the flavour a bit) so that people can visit them as tourists, or stay overnight even. Very scenic, historic and interesting. I do not personally believe in ghosts - though there was the old 30s movie "The Ghost Goes West" with Robert Donat on that theme, which was very funny. Live in a castle? If I had the financial means, why not ? You could probably make them very livable. | | | | | | |

| | sssh Alice.. what are you suggesting! haha you know, you guys, I have done the wonderful touring of Germany when the wall went down and I have been inside a few of the castles then.. I wouldn't mnd, if I had the wealth to maintain them and had no reason to leave either.. so I guess I don't get to live in a castle then, right, astonish? How about I chose my own castle.. on 50 acres of wooded land with hills and dales and streams, a moat and a waterfall, wildlife and wildflowers.. a 2 storey open concept castle with fireplaces in the living quarters and the bedrooms. 4 poster beds ,, French doors to patios and balconies.. aaah to dream.. I tour a few castles here everytime my daughter visits and occasionally .. just because.. it is the history.. for the sake of the meaning of it all and strangely, as a tribute to those that were before me.. that they not be forgotten. so.. would you visit me, if I paid the fare, of course! | | | |

| | Hi Fjaril, money is the secret to everything these days unfortunately, but we can dream. I think that you have great ideas on this. I am still meanwhile thinking of my tigers walking round my place .... | | | |

| | I would love to live in a castle! I would have to have lots and lots of money tho in order to bring it up to date with real windows, central heating, electricity etc. I've lived with ghosts on 2 occasions. First time was scary as heck and I knew to my core that there was something very evil in that house so I didn't live there long at all. The 2nd house was haunted by the former owners who had saved for over 20 years to build their dream home. It was lovely and they didn't bother us once we got used to them and I set some boundaries for them to follow. There is something that really speaks to me about castles and I've only been in 1 true castle that was brought over from Europe and rebuilt stone by stone here in the USA. Magnificent structure and you could feel the history of it but in a very good way! If I ever do have the chance to buy a castle, I'd have to visit it a few times to get the true feel of it. Then if all felt okay, I'd quite happily renovate the inside and leave the outside alone...I'd even try to find out what kind of gardens and trees that it had originally so that I could plant the same. Here in the USA since we are such a young country in so many ways, I don't think we have the same sense of history in our every day lives the way that many Europeans do. Now if you were suggesting to live in it without changing it by adding windows and heat and electricity,,,then nope...not for me! Tho I might visit for a weekend, I live my creature comforts too much and I'd have to have windows to keep our pets safe! Interesting Topic!! Take Care! | | | | | | |

| | hi, jb78000, wow,do u lived in Ireland? I heard its full of old castles, some situated above hill or mountains. Its nice to view from afar but i wouldn't want to stay in it.I always suspect this kind of place full of spooky stuff and perhaps had many paranormal activities.Geeez,i'd better run away.....It's so old and full of mysteries in this castles.I 'd alway thought there torturing of slaves/prisoners inside the castles.Perhaps i watched too much of Hollywood movies-Dungeons & Dragons etc.. | | | | | | |
