The man who ran on how horrible the Patriot Act was...just signed into law a one year extention on it. It was set to expire on Sunday...but instead of Vetoing it or plan just letting it expire...he signed it.
Anyone figured this one out yet? I am mad at Obama...but I am also mad at Congress. Only 47 congressmen voted against it. Anyone calling their congressmen and women wanting to know WHY the voted in favor of this?
What are your thoughts on this?

I will write again if Obama was a Constitutional law professor what part of the Fourth Amendment does he not understand. Also every Congressmen and Senator swears to uphold and defend the Constitution, so the say question to them. My Congressmen voted for the extension, he is not running again, he does not care what anyone in his district thinks.
Just in case anyone does not know what the fourth protects you from here is what it says, The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

I guess Obama missed class the day they talked about the 4th.
For someone who was a Constitutional Lawyer...he sure is clueless about the constitution.

I feel sorry for the rest of us. We now have MORE constitutional lawyers out there that are now clueless about the constitution...all because they sat in on Obama's class.

Actually I think the patriot act is necessary, and I am glad the president has finally realized this. But I wonder why the same people who were so upset about the patriot act said nothing when the current president agreed to give Interpol immunity from being taken to task over violating the constitutional protections of US citizens.

I did more than just contacting congressman on the executive order, I contacted sherrifs, police chiefs and other law enforcement. I laid out the EO using the whitehouse link to it and requested (in the case of my own local and county INSISTED) they not recognize this order and arrest anyone caught operating illegaly under the new order with in their jurisdiction.

Wow.. I am in shock. The Patriot act is unconstitutional. It is wrong. I don't see how any freedom loving american can be in favor of it.
As for giving Interpol immunity...I was against that too and spoke out against it.Not just here on mylot. I contact my elected officials about it.

and Obama will continue to blame this on Bush. Even though he signed it, it is still Bush's fault. Funny how Obama ran on one opinion, but now that he has more info and facts, he leans closer to Bush. Lmao!

The Dems in the senate tried hard to get rid of the worst parts of this act but they could not muster enough bipartisan support to reach 60 votes. The entire Patriot Act was set to expire by Sunday and there were provisions in there that would seriously hamper law enforcement. For that reason, the House voted Unanimously to extend the act and the president signed the extension.
What happened to this bill in the senate is gridlock at its worst and still there are Mylotters on here making a case for the good points of gridlock. Go figure!
I don't know what the solution is. If people think that gridlock is a good thing, I guess they are pretty damn happy about what happened here. Personally, I think the Patriot Act was a horrible knee jerk reaction to 911 and it puts serious limits to Ameican freedom.
I'm a liberal Democrat (used to think I was a moderate) and I know you are not BUT we are in total agreement on the evils of the Patriot Act. So what do we do. You blame the president. I blame the Republicans in congress. We are still stuck with the Patriot Act,

Dude, get over the past and live in the now. RIGHT NOW we have democrats that extended the Patriot Act. RIGHT NOW we have a Democratic president who signed that extension. You know as well as everyone else here that the republicans didn't have the power to extend the Patriot Act. They couldn't POSSIBLY do it if the democrats didn't sign on.
How can you possibly defend the democrats in this situation? NOTHING can be passed without their support as they have a huge majority in both houses.

"...seems your link is to a medical bill."
Seems that way doesn't it? That's how they passed it Rose. They disguised it as a medical bill and gave it a warm and fuzzy name so braindead and illiterate senators and congressman would support it. Here is a link to the specific part of the "Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act" that extends the Patriot Act.

I blame Obama for not vetoing it...and congress for not letting it expire.
The patriot act is unconstitutional.
Of course I blame Bush and his congress for ever starting the whole thing. But our current congress...and Obama had a chance to fix that wrong. A wrong most of them campaigned on fixing I might add...yet..they did not let it expire.
Hypocrites!!!!! They are as bad as Bush now in my opinion...everyone last one of them that voted for it and Obama for signing it.

Lil, have you been able to find who voted against it exactly? I FINALLY found the vote tally. It was extremely difficult as I couldn't find the bill number anywhere and was looking for "Medicare Reform Act" when it turned out it was actually called the "Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act". The bill number is H.R.3961 and here is where you can see the final votes.

I am still trying to find it. They did a "voice" vote...so it is hard to get a list of who voted what way.....you know they did that on purpose.
