We Can't Imprison You Until You Mail It Back |
| |
| Before I being I just wanted to thank Lilwonders for posting a discussion a day or so back. The link and inspiration was provided by her discussion, and I hope she does not mind. I am sure by now some of you have watched a few of those census commercials. There is the one that has, in my opinion, the lame jingle, We can't move forward until you mail it make. Last name I was watching the NCAA basketball tournament, and this commercial came on. While they were signing their little jingle I remembered what happened to the Japanese-Americans back in the 40's. February 19, 1942 President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 which imprisoned over 100,000 Japanese-American. The federal government used information provided by the 1940 census to aid in the internment of these American. We are told that “the data obtained from the census are protected under United States privacy laws.” Yeah how did that work for the Japanese-American? http://news.yahoo.com/s/c... | | | | | |

| | Nothing like that has happened since 1940, and it was tragic it happened at all at any time. We are promised the information will remain with the census and is to be used for no other purpose except to count how many people are in each community. They would be very dumb indeed if the information got out for any other purpose, because then hardly any one would fill out the census anymore. Lots of federal, state and county money out the door if they do not comply with their own rules. | | | | | | |

| | Bush used the census too...or rather I say he abused it too. Just like in WW2. Did you read the link? He got the census to hand over information on Arab Americans in this country after 9/11. He may not have rounded them up...but he definately got a hold of the information that would have made it possible for him to do it. | | | |

| | Lilwonders is correct it has happen again. Those Japanese-American and those Arab-Americans were told that in info would just be used to count how many people are in each community. | | | |

| | I dont mind at all hon. I think it is an important topic that people need to know more about. The more we talk about it...the better. The census IS NOT PRIVATE or just for statical purposes. WW2 taught us that. And for those that will say...well that is acient history. Bush used it recently. He got information on Arab Americans from the census after 9/11. No he did not round them all up. But he could have very easily. He has access to that kind of information from the census. It was given to him. The census department did NOT tell him no. They handed over the information without even a fight. So think about it before you fill it out. | | | | | | |

| | I am glad you did not mind. It make me wonder why they ask some of the questions they ask. Take for instance the question about are you buying, renting, owning, or just living on the short form. Even better the long survey which ask question about toilet and appliances. For a process that is just for a head count they ask question that do not pertain to a head count. If everyone is equal then what does it matter the race of the person being counted? If race matters why not religion, I better not give them any ideas. | | | |

| | I wasn't aware of that but consider most of the census questions unconstitutional and a violation of my privacy rights. I told them I was a homeowner, there is one person living here and nowhere else during the year, my age and under race I entered "AMERICAN". That is all they got, just the demographic information they need in order to know how many representatives to assign to my state. Which is the purpose of the census aside from knowing how many people are legally residing in this country. Anything else is none of their business. I'm willing to go to jail if I have to to stick up for my rights. | | | | | | |

| | I do not see who the knowledge about if you are a home owner or not effects how many Representatives your state gets. If a state has more home owners does the state get more reps? | | | |

| | Woo-hoo!! People are waking up!! Halleleiuiah!! Thanks for doing that and telling us about it. My hubs has been on the warpath about the census, but ours is short form this time. 2 years ago we got the long form & I never sent it back for a long time, then when I did, I filled out our names, status in the family (husband, wife, child) and sent it back. 2 weeks later, census ppl were showing up at my door while I was at work. It was ridiculous. Finally the "head honcho" lady showed up on a weekend & I pretty much asked her why she needed to know after every question she asked. I did not go to jail but sure did make her rethink showing up at peoples' house getting all bossy. She gave me pamphlets & all kinds of stuff to read. IMO, those pamphlets are just a waste of taxpayers' money trying to convince the taxpayers that they are too stupid to comprehend the true reason for the census. | | | |

| | Visitor I have not seen you around these parts in a while. Some want to wake up some do not. I think it is like the movie the Matrix, do you want to take the blue pill or the red pill. | | | |

| | gewcew23 why did you make that insulting remark, about Arab Americans, what the heck has that to do with me, and furthmore I was not asking anyone to care about my family tree, I just suggested that a lot of genealogists do use the old censuses to research their family trees, you are insulting here and I did not do that to you at all. I did not think you do , why have you got yourself into a snarl at me? Is it not true we all here on my lot have a right to our own opinions and to respect each others opinions, I just stated mine, I did not say yours were wrong, just that we differed, and thats okay is it not? I am sorry now I responded to this as I did not expect to be made war on, and I c annot see how my saying us genalogists use the census is inferring in any way about you or other people? I mean myself and a lot of my friends who are into genalogy, or is that wrong also? Again I wish I had not responded now. and will learn not to respond to the census, religion or politics.let other people snip and snarl at each other. | | | |

| | It's true that people may not care about the family tree of others, but I can't imagine people having so little concern about their own families. It's sad to think of ancestors that work for futures, only to have descendants disregard them out of hand. I've done some research myself using census information looking up ancestors of my family. It was fun, and thanks to the internet, fairly easy. I didn't find anything insulting in the census that we just turned in, nor were any of the questions out of line, as far as I'm concerned. Questions like the home style one helps the government determine economies by area of country. Certainly that information could lead to helping determine where funds are awarded for roads, educational funds, or job growth incentives. As far as the nationality/demographic information, when asked the form provided many choices. If they were really only concerned with Arab-Americans, the choices would have been that, or 'other'. It's silly to think that is the only information that's being used. If the government really wanted, don't you think they could already get that from insurance and driving records? | | | |
