Fruit flies in my green house! HELP  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 96/100. dloveli (1582)   ranked 153 out of 1,674 in gardening 2 years ago

As some of you know I am trying to learn to garden. My man bought me a green house for my kitchen. Its nothing major its about 5 feet tall and 2 1/2 feet wide. Its been going good. Right now I have some seedlings in there and some house plants. As well as a pack of tomatoe plants I bought at a fruit stand. I looked today and I had fruit flies. YUK! Only two I killed them. Does anyone know why you get them? and how to rid myself of them without hurting the plants? I did use eggshells in my water to give extra nutrients. I thought maybe the smell was bringing them. So I stopped using it. We'll see. If you have any helpful hints or green house safety tips, please share them with me? First Help me get rid of the fruit flies?! thanks fellow green thumbs. dl

I would probably invest in a bug zapper. The fruit flies go towards the light and well they get zapped.

I found a link that talks about other methods.

I am beginning to think this is the year for fruit flies! I have them too and no green house. I thought they came with ripe fruit but I don't have any and the other day they were in love with my computer and I don't even eat in front of it and it has its own room!! So I hope you find an answer then let me know. I am really tired of them.

Christmas you are in luck! I did some research and I think I found a safe but effective answer. Before you go to bed: In a small bowl put 3tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and then add 1 tablespoon of dish liquid. Put the mixture where you have the most and theyll be gone by morning. Let me know how you make out. I am putting mine in tonight. Goodluck dl

I will give that a try. Right now they seem to be gone. I dumped boiling water down my drain yesterday!

dloveli I just used our mylot search thingyhugs, there is a site called how to reduce fruit flies and fungus, and they tell of a cheap way to get rid of them using a banana as that attracts them, I do not remember the exact name of the site but I am pretty close, and if you go there and type in fruit flies in green house help you will see the site I am talking about and it gives clear instructions too. hope you spot this and it helps.hugs from hatley.hugshugs

They multiply in the damp soil around plants, so don't water them any more than you have to. There's a simple trap that will help get rid of them. You take a plastic bottle (water or soda bottle), cut it in two and put the top inside the bottom, inverted so that it forms a sort of funnel. Put some sweet fruit in the bottom half and leave it. The gnats or fruit flies will smell the fruit and go in but usually can't find their way back out.

myLot reputation of 96/100. dloveli (1582)   ranked 153 out of 1,674 in gardening  2 years ago

Hey Peavey! Thanks for the information. I did read about this technique. I was hoping I would find someone who was familiar with it. I did some research and I also read that if you take the bottle with the flies in it and put a plastic bag around it and stick it in freezer for about 20 minutes you dont have to worry about anything. thanks for the help. I am going to make bottle today and use it with the mixture I found on the web. WIsh me luck. thanks friend. dl

As a fruit loving person who always has fruit bowls overflowing, I am extremely familiar with fruit flies. I used to freak out about them a few years ago because where I grew up they did not exist. Now that I am in a sub-tropical area, they are always in our house during the warmer months.

What I do to keep their numbers down is put some fruit (usually a piece of banana in the bottom of a glass bottle and then place a small plastic funnel on the top of the bottle. They can fly in there to get to the fruit, but they cannot get out. This never eradicates them completely, but I can put up with a few, just not swarms of them.

They are not bad bacteria spreading like ordinary flies so I do not let them stress me. As my wife said, "at least they are not outside landing in dog poo before flying in here and landing on the food!" thumbuprofl

Bill I think you wife is a philosopher! How else would she so eloquently rationalize about the dog poo flies. As I think about it, she was right. I dont worry so much about them now. They are very irritating. I have heard several people speak about this funnel technique. I am going to put it together this afternoon. Thanks for the info. Happy MyLotting Tell your wife I know appreciate the difference between flies. dl

A philosopher you think! lol

Good luck with the funnel thing, I am sure it will at least reduce the numbers for you. thumbup

They may have hatched out of the potting medium, or your egg shell water may have done it, or they may have been in the soil of the tomato plants from the fruit stand. I found a site with a lot of info, and several versions of organic and safe controls. Here is the link.http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Fruit-Flies many of these solutions call for apple cider or wine vinegar. it was a really informative article.

Hi Dloveli.. I don't know what draws fruit flies.. but open an canteloupe and toss out the skin and the seeds and you get fruit flies before the end of the day! It seems like when you get them, you can't get rid of them either.. they like tomatoes... and peaches, bananas too.. **sigh**feeling sick

myLot reputation of 96/100. dloveli (1582)   ranked 153 out of 1,674 in gardening  2 years ago

You are right about that Oreo! Im going to set up a trap that some of the other MyLotters have suggested. I also have a recommended link that is awesome. If you ever need any answers this is where to go. If you need it, its listed above. dl

We had a lot of trouble with fruit flies buzzing around our kitchen plants. But I stopped throwing spiders out and they feasted on them. However, my wife doesn't like spiders so I would have through out the big ones! lol_Derek

Well, it could be that the eggs for the fruit flies were in the soil that your plants are in. This would be my first guess. As far as how to get rid of them, I would check online and see if there are any organic pestisides that you might be able to use that will help you to get rid of them. I've never been one with a green thumb, but I know that the eggs had to have been there and they were given some kind of a reason to hatch. Hope you are able to get rid of them, and please send some tomatos to me when they are ready.

Hi dloveli
I do not have a green thumb so I am afraid I can not be of any help to you..I love plants and flowers but I seem to kill them if I mess with them too much..If they don't need too much care then they will live for a while for me..
Good luck with your garden..
