Medicating a cat

Star, our oldest feral cat, has been sick.
Now, Star isn't our MOST feral cat, but she is currently our sickest cat.
One of the things she has is diarrhea.
So, the roomie called the vet and asked if we could give her Imodium.
Well, the vet told us that it was fine, EXCEPT... one pill was good for a 50 lb dog, so we could only give Star, who is just over 5 lbs, 1/10 of a pill.
1/10 of an Imodium...
Well, I had some Multi-symptom Imodium and they are a bit bigger, so easier to divide into tenths...
Then, something I had picked up had these tiny little bags for scrapbooking - they now hold a dose each...
The things we do for our pets...
So, if you have a cat with a problem like Star's, find out his or her weight and start crushing! Imodium has no flavor, so getting it on wet food doesn't put her off eating it.
What new thing have you learned lately?

I find it depends on how sick he really is. If he's already started sounding congested it does make him drowsy, but if he's just sneezing it doesn't seem to affect him. Of course, don't just go medicating your cat lol You should check if you vet first.

hi elicbxn oh my one tenthof a pill wow. now that would take some doing but it can be done. at least the stuff doesn't taste so thats a big help.
Oh my the only new thing I learned today is that myson was not kidding when he said he had a super short hair cut today. as he looks like hte is going into the marines or something but as he said he wont have to have a haircut again for awhile. he has the most beautifully curly hair which he hates and I wish I had as mine is straight, my husbands was too so he inherited it from my mom who had really curly hair of a reddish brown, but my son's hair is a deeper brown almost black but its brown. So he inherited the richey curly hair as the Hatleys are all straight as a string and my dads clark side also had some seni curly haired people too,.
I also learned to not get upset over responses to my discussions as its not worth it at all.so am grinning and happy again.

Well, when Frisky came down with Feline Leukemia, I did the same thing, I medicated him, and I did it because I thought that I could save him, but I couldn't. You really should get that cat to a vet and get her tested.

That's good, I hope she makes it. If she is anemic try finding cat food with more iron in it. She needs iron. Try giving her vitamins as well. She needs all of the vitamins she can get.
Oh, try feeding her some baby food. If you can get baby food that is strictly chicken or beef, feed that to her. That also works.

I wonder if the benadryl would help with allergies to fleas? The reaction the kitties have to fleas is way over the amount any of my other cats have had. I have learned that my cats may need minerals, at least the one, as he has taken to licking bricks and rocks. I have also learned that I can put a few drops of apple cider vinegar in the water dish and the kitty has a better urine stream instead of dribbling a little in a lot of places.

Wow! And I have no idea what I did with my pill crusher!lol
I used to have to give my Cougar a half a pill a day for his
heart condition! Now that was a fight twice a day! He hated
taking that pill. He would run and hide if he even thought
I was "getting ready"! And he was really great at "pretending"
he swallowed it too! He would foam at the mouth because he
would hold it in his mouth and not swallow it for so long. I
felt so bad having to put him through it, and worse for me
for having to fight him twice a day!

My neighbors showed me a device they got from the vets for administering pills to pets. It looks like a cross between a hypodermic needle and a pea shooter...

that's a very smart idea actually. I've two cats and so far, hanks god they have never been sick or had a diarrhea for more than 3 days, but for the future this is a good idea to keep in mind. I never though about giving pills we use to our pets, but if vet's say it's ok then I guess it is. learned something new here, eh? so thank you for expanding our knowledge.

That's a lovely outcome of itself. Oh, I thought of something I learned. I have read here and there that one way to dissuade cats from using an area is to strew orange peel because cats don't like the smell. Banjo constantly jumps up and sits on the keyboard of my new laptop and he is very sandy! So I decided to keep an orange handy in the hope of keeping him away. I found him rubbing his face up against the orange and purring his little head off ....while lying on my keyboard.
Any idea for alternate Plan B??

My cats are 9 to 10 lbs for baby and 15 lbs for Creamy (ALTHOUGH HE WANTS TO BE 20LS). So we wouldn't have to go to 1/10, but close to that.
Learn something new, yup, bottle caps can make a mosaic. I searched bottlecap art pictures and some average stuff like a fish mosaic came up, but a picture of a man came up and that was awesome!I would never think to use bottle caps for a mosaic and definitely not for a picture of a human face. Maybe I would outline a fish, cat or dog, but to do a mosaic, that was out of my thought processes.
I'm also learning about wind mills.
Thanks for the info, Creamy does get diarhhea on occasion.

Never heard of giving cats Imodium! I'll have to keep that in mind if any of my cats ever have a problem with the poops. Haven't had to give any OTC stuff for the cats yet, though one had an infection in a cut in her paw that required an antibiotic.

I hope Star feels better soon! My dog Gus has the opposite problem.
My white kitty hasn't been around for a couple of weeks but a black kitty has happily taken his place. This kitty has only one eye and the missing eye was seeping pus. He let me rub some Neosporin on it a couple times and it looks much better.

Good info for a cat owner to know. Hope I never need it, though. Sleepy would take a little over 1/5th of an Imodium tablet, but I don't know how I'd give dry medicine to a cat who only eats dry food. It would have to be reconstituted. Oh, I know that it is also sold in liquid form. In fact, that's all I've ever seen. I'm just rambling. Hope Star is already better.

I would think cutting any pill into 10ths would be difficult. At least you found another use for the tiny bags you had. Putting it on her food is a lot easier than trying to get them to swallow a pill of any size. Your right, we would do anything for our pets!

My big cat, Simba, has had chronic stomach problems since he was a kitten. We have to give him prescription pills just for maintenance, but when he has a flare up of diarrhea, our vet suggests Pepcid AC. Simba is 12-13 pounds, so he gets 1/2 tablet. Star would probably need 1/4, but that still would be easier than 1/10 of an immodium. Maybe you could try that?

Oh Elic! I'm so sorry about your kitty Star! Hope she's feeling better by now! Another thing that might help is to give her some water by a syringe so that she doesn't get dehydrated. Bless her little heart!! Give her a few pets from me, please! And I'll say a prayer on her and your behalf.

I remember how difficult it was to medicate my old cat that passed away last year. He hated any kind of tablet and crushing it into his food only resulted in him not eating anything at all because he knew the medicine was in there! My vet ended up giving me a pill popper which a long syringe like device which holds the pill at the end and makes it a little easier to administer the medication that way. Still a struggle though! I was bitten and scratched but I managed...
