I agree with the Obama administration here. It's time to pull out of Iraq. I do wish we could keep bases there, but apparently too many in Iraq's government would rather succumb to Shi'ite threats than welcome those who fought to give them a government worth fighting for. It's time to bring our troops home and let the people of Iraq rise or fall by the government they deserve. P.S. I think it's time we do the same for the people and government of Afghanistan too.. especially Obama has no idea what his policy is there. http://news.yahoo.com/apnewsbreak-us-drops-plans-keep-troops-iraq-194530294.html

We have not finished a war that we started since WWII. ALL of the wars since have been out of greed and power. They have not accomplished anything except to destroy our good name. It does not matter politically if we stay or go...I say go so that we save more young peoples lives. But when we do go, instead of bringing terrorist to our country, we should save innocents and bring them home too. Iraq and Afghanistan are killing off everyone in their countries who are not muslim. Afghanistan just leveled the last public christian church in their country. I say we help these folks instead of giving Hamas and other terrorists a free ride in our country.

If "diplomacy" did not get in the way of us taking Hussein out when I was in Iraq in 91, there would have been no need in 2003. Ceasefire agreements only accomplish one thing... extending the misery indefinitely. Al Qaeda is severely weakened by US and allied efforts over the last 10 years. Before that, terrorists felt free to do whatever they want, whenever they want, where ever they want. It was only after the US was attacked by Al Qeada that the world stood up to them. But pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan should not be construed as an end to the war on Islamist Extremist terrorism. It is only acknowledging that the OIF and OEF have done enough in those two countries, and it's time for the people of those countries to show the world what they are made of. Whether they rise to the occasion, or fall from the weight, what we gave them was a chance to have the government they deserve.

Well now we did win in Kosovo and that area is better for it. It wasn't a big war but we also won in Grenada. We essentially won the first Iraq war and that was when most of the world was with us. The world was with us when we went into Afghanistan. The second Iraq war soured the world against us and gave the radical muslims more reason to hate us.

Hi para ted2k, I am glad to know that US troops in Iraq is finally coming home. I am not from the US but I really do applaud and respect all the hardships and sacrifices that your government and country has made especially your soldiers and arm forces. It just hard to think that these troops have families too and that they have offered their lives to serve the country and for that matter the whole world since they are not only protecting the US but all nations as well. You are right that they (Iraq) need to stand up and start all over again on their own and with the help of their new formed government, as well as in Afghanistan. But I also can't help but to think of the possibilities that might happen in the future if all US troops are gone in these Middle Eastern part of the world. It all comes back in thinking of 9/11...which I hope will not happen again.

I was glad to read this. I mean really we were only supposed to originally be there for a short time and it turned into years. I hate war and fighting and would love to see peaceful times. I know...dream on, right? It would be nice to have our government putting as much effort and focus onto our own country and it's people as they do these other countries. I know it is ridiculous to even want that but I'm being honest. I'd like to see a world with no wars. Too many innocents get hurt or killed, emotionally damaged & families torn apart. It seems as if the ones that actually gain are not the ones actually fighting. I know they will tell us that these people are fighting and dying for our freedom but to be honest, I have less freedom now than I did when I was a child, I think. I know I'm being overly negative and exaggerating but I don't think I've ever felt this negative toward our government. I'm not even bashing Obama. It's all of them. They all lie and they all are corrupt and self-serving. I'm getting off topic. I don't normally get into politics much on here because I tend to do more listening and reading on this subject. Anyway...I hope its true and our troops come home to their families and loved ones.

Trillions are spent in our own country. Personally, I have more military awards for domestic disaster recovery operations than for war. So much is done here in the states, but all we hear is demands for more.

I think it is about time as for having a base there no it isn't needed our military can already get their within hours of something major happening and we will always keep a fleet or two near the Middle East so there is no reason for us to have bases in any foreign Country period. We didn't have bases in WWII in other countries until we got over their and kick the enemy off of theirs. We don't need to have the 200 something bases across the World we should keep our Military Stationed in the United States or the few Protectorates that we have. That is it their is no need for our bases in Europe or even in anywhere but Japan. As we did agree as a term of their surrender that we would defend them as they have gotten rid of having a standing military even though they do have a small defense force. I think personally we could even close down the Japanese base and we do need to get out of Korea.

Ignorant drivel. There is a huge need for a US presence of ground based troops in the Middle East. The fact that Al Qaeda is still allowed to flourish in so many middle eastern countries is proof of that. But the fact is, too many people in the Iraq government don't want a permanent US presence there. So Obama is merely responding to their wishes.

Prs. Bush already tried that, and much of the population of the US rejected it. There are more reasons to have a semi permanent presence in the Middle East than in Europe.

We need to close most of our Military bases from the world their is little to no need for them. And Al Qaeda may still be around in the mountains and such and if they come after us again we should make it clear any nation that harbors them inside their borders will be considered to be in support of their actions and it will be seen as an act of war. In which case we bomb that country back into the stone age like we did Japan and Germany in WWII then we pull out and let them rebuild. We need to get away from our current foreign Policy and go back to the Walking softly and carrying a big stick foreign policy because it never failed us.

We certainly should remove our troops from Iraq. They should not have been there in the first place. The U.S. military should not be used as an instrument for a personal vendetta. Afghanistan is a different issue. If somebody could explain the purpose of having troops there, it would be easier to examine progress and assess the plan for the future. There is no clear goal; it is just that we remain because we are already there. There does not seem to be a clear goal, and that means most of our efforts are pointless. Blaming Obama for problems in Iraq and Afghanistan is convenient and makes a lot of folks feel good--but most of those folks were enthusiastic about starting these wars in the first place. These are Bush's wars, not Obama's.

New flash, Bush is no longer president! Obama is! Therefore it is Obama's job to set policy for the military actions. Denying that is convenient, but it's a lie. By all rights, we never should have accepted a Ceasefire in 1991. We should have accepted nothing short of a full surrender by Hussein, and then kept a presence and turned the occupied areas of Iraq over to the Kurds, who fought with us. Obama has never had a clear policy in either Iraq or Afghanistan. He has simply continued the Bush policies. Now that all of the reasons Bush gave for being in both countries have been fulfilled, there is no reason to continue the war. There are many reasons to keep a presence in Iraq though... Afghanistan, not so much.

It really is convenient to blame Obama for the disasters Bush created. "Now that all of the reasons Bush gave for being in both countries have been fulfilled" I guess you refer to all the weapons of mass destruction we found, and, of course, the pursuit of Osama. No, wait, Bush said Osama was of no importance. So what exactly was the reason for invading Afghanistan? Maybe just to provide some real-life training so he could send troops after his real target, which was Iraq from the beginning. "By all rights, we never should have accepted a Ceasefire in 1991. We should have accepted nothing short of a full surrender by Hussein, and then kept a presence and turned the occupied areas of Iraq over to the Kurds, who fought with us." A little history is in order here. In the first Gulf War, we were part of a very large coalition. Unlike W invading Iraq, which we pretty much did on our own, we had allies and agreements. We were not acting alone. If we had defied our agreements and the decisions of our coalition partners and invaded Iraq then, it would have been a mess, for sure. Turning Iraq over to the Kurds would never work. There are three separate groups running, Iraq, each with its own sphere of influence. The Turks were a lot smarter than anybody has been since. They administered that area as three separate provinces. Anyway, those who enthusiastically supported Bush while he made a shambles of this nation are now the ones screaming loudest for Obama's head. Instead of blaming the man who had all these problems dumped in his lap, maybe we should seriously look for some solutions. Blaming Obama is like blaming Harry Truman for World War II. Or blaming Nixon for Vietnam.

All I said was that Obama is the commander in chief, and should be held responsible as such. Once he become president, he accepted those responsibilities. What is it about Obamabots that keeps them from accepting this fact?

Trouble is that we need our troops in Iraq so that we are at the door steps of Iran. This is half the reason we are there. It is nice to have a strong hold position in the Mideast.

I don't think we would need troops near Iran if we had to attack there. We have (or should have) enough missiles to take out their aerial defenses and then we could use planes to bomb what we need to. Hopefully then, the people might revolt and overthrow the government. The trouble is, what comes after that.

burrito88, When Bush invaded Irag, we had to man up in Kiewitt for almost a month. We bombed our way in before the troops. It is very nice to have leverage in the mid-east like this. I think this is half the reason we invaded Irag.

I think you know this is something about which we're in total agreement, Ted. This was the best news I'd heard for quite some time. The only thing that would make it better would be if the troops were all coming home from Afghanistan at the same time or if they were ALL coming hone tomorrow. My feelings on this matter aren't in the least bit political. I DID support former President Bush when he initially sent our troops to Afghanistan and I wouldn't have liked the idea of going into Iraq if my own husband or brother were President! Annie

Well, we agree with the concept and some of the execution. We can't just pull all the troops out at once, lest we cause another "Fall of Saigon" incompetency. One thing that would make this a total crime... and partially on Obama's head, is if the pullout results in another "killing fields". If Obama has any reason to believe that pulling the troops out will lead to that kind of slaughter, he has an obligation to change his mind here. As it stands, for the stated reasons, I support Obama's decision. But if he is only willingly turning Iraq over to terrorists just to win brownie points in the election, then there is nothing anyone will be able to say to me to try to prove he isn't an inhuman, terrorist loving, satanic piece of monstrous vomit.

I honestly don't think this is being done for political reasons. If this were next year I might buy into that theory, but not this far out from the election. Annie

Let's just say, I will believe it only after it has actually happened. I am certainly not going to take this article at face value simply because his "announcements" have a success rate of approximately less than 1%. Yes, that includes "announcements" that don't need Congressional approval to fulfill.
