I get an allergy attack when I go swimming

And that's either in a swimming pool or in the sea. My chest would feel heavy and "thick" and I would start to sneeze one after another for a couple of minutes. Then the sneezing would stop and start again after some time. My breath would feel heavy as if I'm having an asthma attack. But the attack would stop after a while but it's really uncomfortable when it happens. I can't thoroughly enjoy my swimming because of it. My friends and I think that maybe it's because of the chlorine or something in the water. Anyone have experienced this?

Yeah, but sea doesn't have chlorine in it, so chlorine can't be the cause of your allergy right, secret? What does sea water and swimming pool has in common is only people. Maybe u are allergy to something else and it's spread via via water within the enclosed area? Somehow or other, friends around me tend to have some forms of allergy and i'm wondering why :O I dun think seeing a doctor will be able to get the kind of result u are expecting, so maybe u can consider not exposing too much skin while swimming?

The sea has chlorine, kun. Maybe not in chlorine form but still derivatives of chlorine like chloride in NaCl.

Is that so? I always thought there's only salt in sea water and that would be enough to kill any bacteria.. hehe

Sometimes I do kind of panic in the water. It doesn't really make sense because I do know how to swim. But if I don't go for a long time then I loose confidence and tend to cave in. The chlorine can be a problem! I am indeed very sensitive to chlorine, so much that I put a filter in my shower at home.

Wow! Really, drannhh? So you can't stand chlorine? This is kind of comforting for me. I mean, I never heard of anyone allergic to chlorine except for myself and I was beginning to think I'm weird!

Sorry to jest but you didn't watch Jaws before going into the water did you? Watching a scary film with water can actually make some people fear phobic about going into the water whether real or otherwise. Have you in the past had any accident on or near the water, your unconscious can trigger off things when you least expect them too. You can be fine for years then all of a sudden you can develop a fear, allegy, phobia etc about doing something you've done previously without impediment. It cannot be chlorine or anything in the water as you said it affects you in both the swimming pool and the ocean. I hope you can enjoy swimming again, it's a great form of exercise for the body and mind too. Happy 2012 to you my friend.

It's the fact that I'm affected both in the pool and in the ocean that makes me think it's the chlorine. The ocean has chlorine, too, you know. I did not have any traumatic experience with swimming although I did experience some life threatening instances. It did not result to any phobia though.

Perhaps you're allergic to chlorine. See a doctor as soon as possible, allergies are nothing to play with. You could die. They will do tests. As I said before, do it soon and don't be sorry later.

I know! Allergies are really scary. I have food allergies and the first time I got it, I needed oxygen. I'll surely be mentioning this to my doctor.

Nope. My eyes don't swell. They only swell if the cause is food. But when swimming, I only get something like asthmatic.

No, I am not allergic to any thing while swimming. What I am very allergic to is coconut, any things that has coconut in it. If I drink coconut juice. within secods I would become dizzy. That raises my blood presure. So, I have to be cery careful with coconut.

I would agree with your friends that it is the chlorine causing the tightness in your chest and sneezing, if it wasn't happening in the sea as well to you. I used to have the same breathing problems with chlorine (although I never had it swimming in fresh water) back when I was young and I would spend the entire day at the swimming pool. But it truly has to be something else in the water that is causing the allergy for you, there's no chlorine in the ocean....

There's no chlorine in the ocean but there are chlorine derivatives like chloride.

So far I have not experienced the same thing. I don't go to swimming too often anymore but I do love to go to beach or swim in the pool, 'though I don't know how to swim. A little research may help you know what this allergy comes to you whenever you to swim in the water.

Hi secretbear. Is the first time that happened to you? Is it everytime that you go on swimming you sneeze or having difficulty of breathing? If it is, then try to consult your doctor if the chlorine in the pool is causing this. Do you see some rashes in your skin after you went swimming? rashes and itching is also a sign of allergy. I hope that you'll able to know what really causing you this.

Hi tatzkie! No, this isn't the first time. It always happens when we go swimming. I don't see any rashes or any itching. Only those what I have mentioned. I am already planning to tell it to my doctor the next time I go for a check up.
