I have gotten a JRT and a Border Collie from the humane society.
My mom and step dad were going thru a nasty divorce and some how he ended up with MY dalmatian. So, my mom felt bad and we went to the h.s. to pick out a new dog. This dog had recently been altered (his leg was still shaved from the IV). Anyway, the first week went ok and then he started getting nasty (tearing up stuff, etc.) The other dog we got when we moved into our new house (my husband and I). The border collie would pee in the house and stuff. It was said that he was a stray. In time he toned down some though. I used to get a little emotional in a humane society, but for some reason now that I have kids I care WAY more about them then pets. I get more emotional seeing a child crying from pain then I do seeing a dog penned at the humane society. However, when I read about animal cruelty, that's another story! I get FURIOUS at the people who are harming their pets.

Ok, I guess my answer may have seemed a little heartless. I just want to clarify that I DO care about the welfare of animals - and every year I donate to the humane society. I know that not every pet can find a home right away, but by donating I think I might be making their life a little nicer (by getting them new toys, maybe sure they have plenty of food, or a nice new comfy bed, etc.)

I have rescued two cats. I had no info on them, except an approximate age. I get very emotional about animals in general. I love them, and wish more people respected them more than "just a pet." They are smart, loving, affectionate, and have feelings too.

I get very emotional when anything concerns pets, unless they are loved and treated with the respect that they deserve. I got two cats from the society. I don't know anything about their pasts, but that I love them and they are very loving back.

I've gotten almost all my dogs and cats from the pound. The last one I got, my dog (lunk head) Jake, he was actually my second choice. I had gone in before work one afternoon. Picked out this gorgeous full blooded black lab female about 9 months. Owner turned her in because she "was destroying the house". Well, duh, she's a puppy, should've crate trained her. She was big, sweet, and scared being in there. She was my first choice. Then there was Jake. He looked sweet, beautiful shepherd/yellow lab. But, I figured a female would get along better with my other dog at home. So, figured I'd come back the next day and pay for her and all. Came back when they opened next day, couldn't find her. They had just put her down 2 hours before. Honestly, I cried and cried and cried. I didn't realize you had to have them hold the dog, they had the room, there was nothing on there about euthanizing her. I was so upset, as ridiculous as it sounds. Then I got mad at the original owners for being butts and not crate training her. Anyway, went with Jake, he was picked up as a stray(but he knew German commands so had an owner), was hell for the first 6 months, now 5 years later, he's my favorite but a big lunk.

I am so torn with the Humane Society. Here and I'm sure most other places they do so much killing, aborting and such that I find the word HUMANE to be a joke. Yet, they do save so many animals also. I guess I just have too big of a heart!

I've rescued many pets from shelters and fostered them. Of my own personal pets though, one of my zebra finches came from a humane society. The others are either private surrenders or I found them.
The shelter didn't have a story on this zebra finch. I don't get emotional when adopting, but it sucks when you have to leave and can't save anyone because you have no room. I'm pretty good at being able to leave empty handed though and just volunteer to help the animals while they're there if I don't have a spot available at home.

We got our cat from there. The family that had her we're moving to a place that didn't accept pets and we gave her a home.

Nope, all three of my dogs were given to me for some reason or another. We did get my pet turtle from petsmart (he was rescued off the side of the road with a broken leg)
My boyfriend just recently bought a puppy from a boxer rescue group (which is just as good as the humane society except they only deal with one type of dog)
I have never paid for a pet, I am not sure I ever will. If I do, pay for an animal it would probably be from some sort of resuce place. Probably one that puts animals to sleep after they have been there for so long...

I haven't got a pet from the actual humane society - but I did get a rescue dog. In the UK where I used to live, sheep farmers choose the best dog or 2 out of the litter to become sheep dogs and the rest are shot. We had a dog that would have been shot. He was a very loving dog, very kind natured and incredibly good with other animals. When we had kittens, he "adopted" one! He would pick her up by the scruff of the neck and take her into his basket and lick and make a fuss of her! When that kitten grew up she loved that dog - it was amazing to see their special relationship! I do get very emotional as far as animal cruelty is concerned. Animals have no voice, we are their voice and we should stand up for them. They all deserve our respect and were not put on this earth to suffer abuse and cruelty.

We got our dog from an animal shelter. We got him when he was 1 yr old. We found out that he had 2 previous owners, and that when we had seen him at the shelter, he was just returned the previous day. Lucky for him, we have had him for 8 years now, and he is a wonderful dog.

yes we did adopt a pet once when i was a young teenager.. a dog that had been mistreated.. unfortunately, the dog was jsut too fargone and displayed various aggressive behaviors and our family couldnt keep him, we only had him for about a month,, he broke through our door and severly injured our neighbors cat.. we felt awful, but he needed to be put down.. we were the 2nd family to try to help him.. it was very sad

Well not exactly the humane society. I got two of my rabbits through WildRescue (the organisation I am currently working for) and I got Vali, my German Shepherd Dog through Good Shepherd Rescue. I tend to support private rescue groups rather than the humane society itself.

We get all of our pets from the humane society, it's nicer that way. Those pets are homeless and really need a home. I know the ones in the pet store do too, but those pets are breaded specifically to sell and I don't like to support those store. People gotta stop worrying about getting the perfect labradoddle or other breaded dog, when there are tons of mutts that need a home.

A long time ago, I did adopt a mutt from the humane society. He was around 6 months old, black, and so loveable. He was a little shy at first around the kids, but ended up trusting them. He would let them do just about anything to him after that, all the hugs and tugging on his ears it was cute watching them respond so well to each other.
I do feel so bad for all the animals there. If I could have adopted them all I would have!
We ended up moving and had to give Shadow to some friends, but he was happy with them and their kids.

I have gotten pets in the past from the humane society as a kid. I haven't since I got old enough to have my own home. I typically have taken in animals on the way to the humane society or ones that have been dumped.
However today I went and looked at a dog there. I have a hard time going into the humane society or other animal rescues as I feel so bad for the animals with no one to love them...and locked in cages.
I was greatly surprised today as...I found our cat that went missing when we were away last week...So we shall be springing charlie from jail soon. Surprised as...the humane society i visited is 60 KM from home..but the people who dropped him off only live 4km from my moms house.
