I started a discussion in health about the update on my health condition, the doctor says my diarrhea may be due to the diabetes medication I am taken, have you ever taken a medication that caused bad side affects? Have you ever refused a medication because of the side affects?

One time my doctor give me some samples for a depression medication and the side effects scared me so bad that I ended up just taking one and then threw them away. I don't understand why they give us medications where the side effects are worse than what we are taking the meds for.

they try to give you the best meds for the problem you have, not everyone gets side affects from the meds, so try them and see.

In the past I was on an anti-depressent (efexor, I think) that turned me into a freaking zombie. I got off that fast and went on remeron, and that helped. That was years ago, and I'm off the anti-depressents. I posted two discussions on here, one about biaxin (I won't take that if you pay me) and another one about kaeflex (side effects there too, but not as bad as biaxin). Kaeflex I can handle, but I woudln't take biaxin if you paid me a million dollars!

At this point I have not had to take any long term medications. I would think twice before I ever took anything long term. I did refuse Vioxx once, as well as cortisone shots for my toes. Yes, diabetes medications have serious side effects.

Yep my mom refuses to take her diabetic medication since it causes her severe diarrhea so she told doctor she can't function properly since she has to stay on the toilet more then she is off of it and has to many accidents trying to make it to the bathroom and she told her to try to find a different one. Also she won't take her Lipitor because of the side effects. I stopped taking birth control that had hormones that helped me since I have cystic ovaries and alot of female problems bit it was causing me severe migraines and and I thought I was going to have a stroke. I went off and just deal with the problems as needed.. that is all we can do when nothing helps or if helps cause more problems then it fixes.

Her doctor never offered her anything just told her to continue taking that medication and that it would take her body two months to stop having diarrhea as her body gets used to it. Maybe if her doctor recommended something or even gave her anything she would take her diabetic meds instead of having hers flair up past 300 and over.

Are you taking Metformin? This sounds like some of the common side effects from that medication for sure, and Sorry to hear you are having these type of side effects. I had the opposite myself and the severe cramps, etc. so I was never able to take Metformin, and now due to other Health issues, I am on Insulin and having good results with the ones I use now. I have had many issues with Medications and what may work good for me for a while sometimes ends up not working for me later. I have broke out in rashes, severe headaches, chest pains, etc. as well. It is not Fun for sure. What I do now, is usually do my homework a little bit before starting a New medication now, and then go from there. Sometimes it does help to do this as well.

yes I am on metaformin but I have had this diahrea long before any medication that is why the doctor is not sure what it is, but he told me to tell my diabetes doctor to change the prescription for metaformin to something else though

I honestly don't know if I would stop taking a medication that would cause bad side affects. Now, I know when I took the pain medication after I had teeth work done. It made me violently ill, it wasn't in my stomach long enough for the medicine to work. Plus it hurt really bad, when the medicine would cause everything to come back up. I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt or would have worked if I had food on my stomach. With the work done, I couldn't eat anything, so it was a no win situation all together. Also when I take a lot of cold medicines it makes me sleepy, even if it states on the bottle non drowsy. After reading that your diabetes medicine is causing you a lot of pain and diarrhea, I still don't know. I mean if the pills are suppose to help me in the long run, I would have to suffer with the stomach problems. Reason I say this, I saw my grandmother suffer and later die because of diabetes. I wouldn't want to suffer or even die because the side affects were more painful than how the medicine was helping me.

That's where the medicine is more important than the side effects, hopefully, the doctor will find out what is causing your stomach problems before changing your medicine. That way, you don't have to deal with changing medicines with all new side affects. Now unless it is your diabetes medicine that is causing problems. I don't remember my grandmother taking any medicines for her diabetes, just having to have a shot every day. She hated getting that shot and my grandfather hated having to give it to her.

I can't take dairy intolerant medication. It makes me feel terrible. I don't take it and use lactose free milk in my recipes. The problem in milk is the lactose for me can't digest it.

I am sorry to hear that. I had side effects from taking steroid medication after having my hysterectomy. I stopped taking the medicine because of it without asking my doctor first. I knew there was going to be side effects and it was discussed before hand to stop taking if I chose to do so. I know it is different for you though.

i have been on and off prednisone for breathing and severe arthritis pain and those pills have very nasty side effects, that is why they only put me on for a short period (i ended up in emerg due to an asthma attack and had them perscribed for the severe pain that i am in due to my knees). but never had any stomach issues - i am on celebrex now and take it with food - apparently it causes severe stomach issues if you dont.

Hi winterose.. Im not sure if one can call it a side effect. I remember one time I had a fever due to tonsilitis. I called my Mom and asked what medicine shall I take. She prescribe a certain medicine. I did not inform her that I was experiencing hyperacidity too. In less than an hour after I took the pill, I cant straightened my body for so much pain I felt at my stomach and at the same time I was throwing up. Good thing my place was near a hospital and my boyfriend was with me at that time. I was rushed to the hospital and the doctor's finding was that the pill I took wasnt good for people with hyperacidity or ulcer in that matter.

I have had minor side effects from medicine, nothing too serious though. I was given these one pill to take that was really huge, and I only had to take a half a pill every day. I had to cut them, but when I did this it always kind of came apart. I would take it and the taste was so horrible. I had trouble getting it down and half the time my throat would reject it and pop it back up. It got to the point where I just stopped taking it. The doctor also gave me a pill once where a possible side effect was weight gain. I didn't take it. I have enough problems, and don't need to take something that is going to make things even harder for me.

A while back I had to take antibiotics for a sickness that I had and wound up having the side effect of a yeast infection. It was hard to deal with but the need for antibiotics at the time was important to me getting better. It is true and also a shame that side effects can happen with certain medications. I don't believe that I have ever had side effects bad enough that I would want to refuse certain medications. I wish you the best.
