She Can, He Can, Pecan

I have been having a discussion elsewhere about how we pronounce the word "pecan" as in the nut. I pronounce it "Pee Can". However, there is an endless list of regional accents in the UK alone. How do you pronounce the word?

Hi p1ke, Yes, here I am still up in the wee hours. I just wanted to answer a couple more of my friends topics, before heading to bed. Now look what's happened! I find myself confessing to you, about the late hours I keep. I do appreciate your concern 'in advance' though. Anyway, I pronounce it "Pee Can," just the way you do. One thing I do know, 'they' are absolutely delicious, no matter how 'we' say it. I actually bought some mixed nuts yesterday, and pecans are among them. Yum.

Now you know that I have someone that sends me to bed. looks like you need someone too Mom!! Or else!! LOL. I haven't had Pecan Pie since 1983 and I was lamenting the fact to a friend. The next thing that happens I'm debating just how to pronounce the word. Enjoy your mixed nuts!

I pronounce the word Pecan as "Pee Con" I don't know why it is just how i have always pronounced it. Maybe others in my family pronounced it that way when I was a child and it just stuck..Of course us Kentuckians do have a way of messing up pronunciations a mite. Like Yeller for Yellow....lol

i do not know why but your discussion reminnded me of "i scream, you scream,we all scream for icecream".i spell it as pican as in pistachio.otherwise it would cause embrassment for others.

Pee Can is a great way to pronounce the word. :) It reminds me of something else though. I just checked the dictionary, and it says that the North Americans pronounce it as "pi kaan" with the stress on the second syllable, and the British pronounce it as "pee kun" with the stress on the first syllable. As an Indian, I think I wouldn't mind adding a "n" sound just before the second syllable. That would make it extremely hilarious. You sure get great ideas for discussions, Pikey! Cheers and happy Mylotting

Yep, in Aus we call it pee can too. However, I have an American friend who says peh carn. Whichever way they are pronounced, they are yum - nothing nicer than a warm slice of pecan pie with a strong coffee ... mmmmmmm ...

You probably caught me saying this out allowed to myself, but I checked to make sure no one was listening to me otherwise they'd think I'm mad, correction I am already mad so that shouldn't make any difference, oh nuts, yeah good pun, right having said it three times like Dorothy did with those red shoes I have come to the conclusion for me to say it, it goes like this pecun! Yes for some reason I sound it with a 'u' instead of the 'a' does that make sense to you? No matter how many times I say it, it keeps coming out pecun, pecun, does that make me sound cuckoo? or cackoo even LOL!

I say PEE-can but I have heard American friends (in California) pronounce it pe-CAHN. I suspect that the latter is really correct ... 'pe-CAHN pie' sounds a whole lot nicer and more sophisticated than 'PEE-can pie' (is that a pie made in a piss-pot?) I love pecans nearly as much as walnuts (to which I believe they are related) and especially with maple syrup.

I am very fond of them too Owlwings. When I was a boy we had walnut trees beside our garden wall. I have often had green fingers from opening up the casings to get at the nuts. You rarely get fresh walnuts here these days. Of course we also suffered stomach upsets from eating them too young. Still, it went with the sourness of the crab apples that we also ate. Is it any wonder that I have stomach problems these days?

Well Bo and Irish pronounce it the same so there has to be something in it - mind you, I'm not too surprised that you and Bo pronounce it the same way. I agree, a nut is a nut. Why do people always look at me when they talk about nuts?!!

I'm from the U.S. as well and I've always pronounced it Pee Con. I wonder if there is a regional difference here as well. I'm originally from Ohio. DH is a native Californian and he pronounces it Pee Can. Funny, I never thought about it until you asked the question!

It is a regional thing, really. Most Northerners say PeeCan. Well, the ones I know, anyway. I find that Texans pronounce it with only slight differences according to which part of Texas they are from.

My family says it different ways at different times - we have the Pee Cans (accent on either syllable), the Peekins, and the Pee Cons, although I think the latter is used mostly for the pie. My mother loves Pecan Pie. I don't know that there is a "proper" pronunciation. It's just one of those words no one can decide over, which is unique for our area since there are some other words uniquely pronounced around here. Water = wooder You (plural) = yous Empty = Ampty (my mother's own personal pronunciation) To the shore or At the shore = Down the shore Any gerund (words ending with 'ing') = the 'g' is dropped

As a fellow resident of the UK I can confirm that you are right, p1kef1sh, in saying the pesky word 'pee can'. Another doozey is 'nougat'. Being a blunt northerner I tend to say 'nuggat' similar to a rough piece of gold. Posh southern softies like to say 'noo gar' What's your expert opinion? Oh, and can we settle the 'scone' debate? to me it's a 'skoan' not a 'skonn'. Do you put 'marj areen' on it or 'marg areen' Hey - this is starting to sound like Klingon....!
@p1kef1sh (45681)
18 Dec 08
Now I am a softy southerner born of Midlands parents. I say bAth not barth and pAth not parth. However, I do say Skonn and noo gar. I also pronounce Shrewsbury not Shrosbury as most down here do. Then again, I'm married to a Geordie by way of Brum. You hear all sorts here my friend.

And, here in South Jersey (the state, not the isle), it's "skoan" and "mar-jer-in" - or to my mother "oleo". To me - only "butter" will do!

Of course it's a bath not a barth. There would be an 'r' in it if you said it that way. It's like the double 'oo' debate. It's look not luck, and it's book not buck. We could go on forever.......

I pronounce it pee-cn, with the emphasis on the "pee", and the weak pronunciation of the word "can". It's interesting that you say it differently. My mother-in-law is Australian, and she says it in the same way as (I think) an American person would. She says pee-can, with all the emphasis on the second half of the word. I'll follow this discussion with interest!

Ooh, I just read Goodie's comment above. Very interesting. Is there some sort of a cultural divide in Australia (over this word)? I've noticed that she also says or-eg-ano instead of oreg-ah-no, (as we say it here), and I'm never sure if that's an Australianism or something that she's got from some American friends!
