Hello friends, In India, the Court is asking to the government to take steps to avoid junk food in school canteen. Junk foods and soft drinks easily available in school canteen which often made me confused, from the nursery class, they are educating kids not to eat junks foods, junks food are unhealthy etc but those foods are easily available in school canteen. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/schools-get-ready-to-junk-unhealthy-food/856848/ It is really a welcome step, as the school is teaching kids to avoid junk foods or junk foods are not healthy then it should not be available in school canteen. I hope here onwards healthy foods will available in the canteen of all educational institutions of India. How about your place? In schools, colleges and nearby places, is it junk food available in the canteen? Please share your thoughts about junk food and its disadvantages. How it will affects the kids negatively? Hi Sree! Excellent post! It is a welcome step. Junk food are not healthy and such items does no good to our physical state of health. They could in fact cause of many ailments in children. However, it is easier said than done. Everyone wants to have something ready-made to eat. Be it potato wafers, savory items, deep friend Indian snacks, burgers or pizzas. There are actually few items, which do not fall into the category of junk food. Those items remain fresh for a certain period of time and those are always freshly prepared at home. For example, if you serve freshly fried Pakoras to your kids then it is OK, however, if you serve the Pakoras after 5-6 hours, it will fall into the category of junk food. Kids have become so used to consuming junk food that they do not like home cooked food and think that it is below their status to take home cooked food to their school. Parents have their own limitation, specially those who are a working couple. So it is like catch 22 situation, where you just can not get rid of junk food, even if you wish.

But I’ll tell you something…since this is India, I would not really trust outside food in any form (junk or healthy) for school kids. Ideally, food should be sent from home and it doesn’t really take much time. I’ve even given overnight chapattis to my son along with some light curries for lunch at school…many children bring similar lunches…some even bring just chapattis and pickles…still healthier than junk food or food prepared by school however, I dont really like pakoras served cold...they somehow cause acidity so I dont feel that's a good option

Hi Sree! You are right that if you prepare 'Pakoras' at home, it would be fresh and neatly prepared using the best quality oil. However, in canteens etc. you could not be sure about hygiene etc. Give some ideas of healthy food, which could be served in school canteen.

Hello Deepak, First I will start with the Pakoras, if it prepared at home, it can serve hot, another point is at home we use fresh oil for making the same. Outside shops, they are using repeatedly the same oil used for frying earlier, which is very dangerous for health and it can easily invite diseases. Even if at home we should avoid the use of oil we already used once. In shops, do they bother about the health and it will be losing for them if they use fresh oil every time. I agree, we can't avoid junk food from our life completely, however, it can be avoided in the school canteen, as they are teaching junk food is not good for health. They can provide healthy food instead. Thank you so much Deepak for sharing your views.

Hello Sree.. This is very wise step from our Government. So is this step is going to implement in all over the India ?? Its good that children will able have the healthy food. Surely this junk food is not good for health. And these days kids are more attracting with this food. So surely its a wise step that they will allow this food in schools. Because kids always used to eat such food from school. But now they all safe.

Hello anand It is an order from Delhi High Court so it may be applicable in Delhi. But I hope other states will follow this rule subsequently. I would like to add, in Villages, there won’t be a school canteen where kids get food. They have to depend on the food packed from home else they have to go out in the street for food, which is equally dangerous. I hope the Law will be implementing successfully. Thank you anand, what about deepawali celebrations?

Hi Sri, I did not know there was a court directive to this but about a few months ago, there was a notice from my son’s principal stating that all soft drinks and chips were no longer available at the school cafeteria…maybe this was in the same context. You know I think our government really doesn’t care for the health of its citizens. At the beginning of this year, there was a court ruling seeking to ban the sale of guthkas and paan masalas…the ban was supposed to be effective from 31st march 2011, but nothing came of it. Secondly, Indians have traditionally consumed coconut water and buttermilk to quench their thirsts. Now, you can guarantee the hygiene of buttermilk but you can be sure about coconut water…yet, the govt does nothing to promote its awareness and sales among the younger generation. Everywhere you see on the road, whenever people are thirsty, they are paying Rs 12/- to buy a bottle of soft drinks which is doing so much damage to their health yet they are not very eager to pay Rs. 15/- for coconut water. In aping the west, we are neglecting our own traditional food and drinks which are most suited to our health and weather conditions.

WHAT!!! And I thought Rs. 15/- was on the higher side!!! OMG Sri do you think our grandchildren will only get to drink coconut ‘flavoured’ water? I really wish our dysfunctional agriculture ministry did something to promote growth of coconut… Actually I feel a lot of things are purposefully not being done to help the business interest of a select few.

Hello Sudipta, There is already a ban in those foods and soft drinks in school and college canteens and the school are filed an affidavit too. It seems no school followed the rule and Court is interfered with the matter by saying that ‘we don’t need lip service but things should be in practical…’ I am not sure about the practical side again as this is India and we are happy to disobey the Law. Dear, Coconut water is really costly here, it will be available in Rs. 30/- to 50/- depends the area (if the area is posh then you have to give 50 rupees).

Hi kala, That's indeed a good move on the part of the government. What's more important is to ensure that it does happen actually. It's a scene outside most schools and colleges here. You should see how the vendors marketing and how the students devouring in the delights that they are offered. The canteens are no better. I do not think, the government colleges, has any quality control. Parents have been fighting but in vain.

Hi mimpi, Actually the government already given instructions on banning junk foods at school canteen but the sales are still going on. This time Court has interfered and asked the government, do not make it as lip service but we want the same in practical. Let us hope this time it will work. I have confirmed it from my son’s school; junk food is still on hot sale. Belated Navaratri to you.

Dear Sree, There is no doubt Junk food affects the health and that too near to school would surely attract the students. May be the concern food inspector should take a strict inspection and quality check up so that much healthy food can be consumed. Moreover quick action and punishment on the those who do not maintain quality healthy food. I feel the students could get healthy food and this has to be assured by the authorities over there otherwise it would better to ban such activties. May be if a student of person is unable to bring food there could be provided quality foods in canteen or other food providing places inside the school or college that is well maintained by the managements by providing healthy hygenic food. I feel if it sure that they are not able to provide healthy food it is better to avoided or banned.

Hello Sham, I agree the junk food affects the health of students and their intelligence too. The funny thing is, school authority is allowing the canteen people to make these junk foods. Still I remember, one of the teachers said in orientation program, ‘I agree the ‘samosa’ and ‘bread pakoda’ is tasty but discourage your kids to eat the same’. Why can’t they ban these foods in school canteen instead of asking the parents to take risk of controlling their kids from eating this food in school? I hope the new initiative from the Court will be an answer for my concern. Thank you Sham, hope you celebrated the ‘Saraswathy pooja’ well.

Hi Sreekala, I am all for it ! In fact I would go one step further and make it a rule never to send chips, wafers and cola as lunch snacks either by the parents...I have seen so many children bringing in a couple of biscuits,a packet of wafer and a drink for lunch , day after day...So we have to bring in more awareness all round..

Hi Kiran, As a parents, we also got instructions right from the beginning (I mean from nursery class), don't send junk food for kids, no soft drinks etc. They asked to send protein rich foods, home made juices, fruits etc. But I don't understand the point why the school canteen is selling junk foods there for kids? As a teacher what do you feel? I have seen that the picture in the books, ‘no’ for junks foods and ‘tick marks’ for healthy food. But once they come out from the class, they can watch the sales in the canteen. Can we blame them if they get confuse?

Kiran, I felt that is really great, by providing meals in school itself, kids will get balanced food and they don't need a canteen either. Parents can also relax in morning times by knowing that the kids will get a balanced diet in school. Here private schools are providing food for Nursery and KG only (they are collecting money from parents). Rest of the students are either bring food from school or depend the school canteen.

Sreekala, when I was studying we got lunch at school, which was rice, dhal, vegetables and curds - according to me it is a very balanced meal.I have those memories and I seriously feel that private schools at least should provide a balanced and healthy lunch for the students. It does not cost much and can be collected from the parents .In fact several schools in my town have already started this with full support of the parents. This way we are also tuning in to the new life style where the parents have no time to cook a proper meal for packed lunch, by making it easier for them and also make them feel less guilty about not being able to provide what they ought to...I have a feeling that by and by all schools will have to think on those lines...

I think it is a great step. I think the youngsters of today are really getting carried away with junk food. So in this way at least in the schools kids do not have ready access to junk foods. Hopefully this will reduce the obsession with junk food. Cheers! Ram

Hi Ram, It is true, major percentages of kids are obese now just because of the junk food. Some kids are keeping on watching tv and busy on eating junk foods at home too. They don't realize the amount they eaten, because they are engrossed in the programme. This may be a reason for become obese. Kids are always attracted with the tasty food without knowing the bad effects. If it is not available in school, I think they won’t consume the same in school, at home if the parents are vigilant then we can save our kids from junk food. Thank you so much Ram. Have a great week.

This is indeed a welcome step. I think parents and the school are equally responsible for the kids eating junk food. Most of the parents give the children pocket money and this money is only spent on junk food available either in the school or just outside the schools. Junk food is bad for health and responsible for the obesity in many kids.

Hi dear, Exactly, both parents and school authority is responsible for this. Parents show their love by giving pocket money to kids but they failed to find out in which way they are spending the money. In one way it is good to provide pocket money, it helps the kids to handle money in a wise manner, same time; parents should watch and give advice to their kids how they can use the money wisely. Thank you so much dear. I have seen that you are active again in mylot like earlier, I got busy with works so could not participate with your topics. Take care and have a nice time.

Hello dear sister, If it implements successfully then it is good for kids are parents. But the sad part is, Law is not implemented properly in India. The Ban are already exists in school canteens but there is no difference, that is the real reason the Court has interfered and asked to be strict with Law. Have a great weekend dear. I read your posts in Triond but I could not comment due to some problem (some errors are coming).

hi sree I don't let you dragged me again that's why i'm here Finally, our drowsy government has enforce a very vital law in our country. The parents(you also) whose children are in school are very much relief or happy by listen this news, as now there children will not able to take this junk food which causes very harmful diseases(obesity, heart diseases, stroke and many more). Previously government had taken various step to stop down the consuming of such food they had rise the prices of such junk food to reduce the sale but the result were the same, i think this step of the government will be worthful and many of the pupils will remain healthy...

Hi siliguri, So nice of you. I hope they start to serve with ‘Rajma chavel’ or ‘choley chavel’ (Rice with pulses or grams) instead of making ‘samosa’, bread pakoda, burger etc. I don’t have the habit of sending money with kids, but my son used to tell me, one of his friend provide this thing from school and shared his food too. I can’t help in this situation, either I can’t say that don’t share your food or anything like that.. It will be a great relief, if school canteen provides nutritional food only. Thank you so much. Hope the preparations started for Deepawali.

Sree beti This is definitely a good step, here in front of each school even college you see moveable stalls that sell junk foods, they are prepared from over used oil etc, more over the utensils are not clean at all, while in service, in one college i called a man who ran a canteen in one of our rooms, near the staff room.. we should encourage our kids to avoid junk foods, chips, kurkure etc, they should eat what we give in tiffin box.. Thanks for sharing Best of luck. Professor

Hello Sir, I agree, moving stalls are a usual scene in every road and most probably there will be a rush around the stall so we can guess the taste of food and how people are attracted with it. Then how can we blame the small kids, naturally they also attracted with the taste. It is the duty of elders to make them aware about the problems. We can provide it once in a while to taste it and it won’t harm. Thank you so much sir, take care of your health.

Hello Sreekala, This is great step court has taken. Junk food as we know is not good for health and it should not be sold in school cateens because of small kids. I know junk food does lot of business in canteens and kids have a craze to eat burgers, patties but then they are bad for health they don't understand it but people who teach not to eat junk food should understand it and try that kids don't eat it.

Hi sjvg, I have been watching every corner of this place is getting rush with people, where junk foods are sold. It is true that people are attracted with the tasty food (I agree the junk foods are very tasty). In case of kids it will affect the same in a different way; I read that it may affect the IQ of children if they are much on junk foods. It is the responsibility of parents to keep an eye on what their kids are eating but in school it should be the responsibility of school authority. Thank you sjvg for the participation and sharing your views.

hello sreekala, though not an indian citizen myself, in fact i live in a country where there is junk food everywhere, the conversation is very interesting. i am pleased to hear your government is now being forced into action, as the problem with junk food is that its cheap and easy to prepare, and so its no suprise that children at school like it, and that the schools offer in the canteen, because its easy. but its good to see that there are a lot of people who aware this is a problem, and want to do something about it.

Hello france, I am glad to know that you also concerned about the junk food. Our kids are attracted to the junk food just because of the taste and they don’t know about the bad side as well. Even the elders, who know the problem, are attracted and can’t resist the temptation when getting an opportunity to eat junk food. It is the duty of parents and teachers to spread awareness among kids about the disadvantages of junk food. I hope our government will be successful in this venture. Thank you so much for your views here. Have a nice week ahead.

You're right if they do not like students eating those unhealthy or non-nutritious foods, therefore they must eliminate it from canteens. This seemed to be a problem on our school too when I was still on my elementary years. Junk foods are indeed not healthy because of the vetsin that composes it. Vetsin causes these foods to be salty which will now cause kidney stones formation or even kidney failure. In order to avoid this, you must drink a lot of water after eating such. I hope kids will be taught about this. So that they could also be aware on its bad effects in the body.

Hi Kartstine, That is my thoughts too. It is always good if they can make it practical in front of kids. What is the use of teaching about the disadvantages of junk food and provide the same in school itself. (I felt it is a shame). Good the Court is interfered with this matter and asked to make necessary changes. Court also asked to check the near by shops in school and make it sure that healthy foods are served. We all know about the problems with junk food then also if we get a chance to eat, should we refuse it, if so, how many of us will refuse the same. I mean, we can’t blame our kids to eat the junk foods; we can try to avoid the availability when they are away from parents (when they are in school). Thank you so much for your views.

Our school should avoid selling junk foods. It can lead to malnutrition. They should go for healthy but affordable food that may help the students to become healthier, stronger and smarter.but I think it will be a long process to implement this act.It will need cooperation and perseverance to pursue this goal. And i hope it will happen soon.
