If we could access mylot through a mobile application?

Hello to everyone here. As we all know that mylot is back with a bang. I could gauge the enthusiasm of old timers from their posts/ comments about the revamped mylot. I am here for the last many years. I remember that I was so addicted to mylot that I used to even log in to mylot through my small size (limited capacity) mobile handset, when mylot used to be in the older format. Since then there has been a sea change in the technology. Now a days most of us have ‘smart phones’. Those who possess smart phones know that there are mobile applications for many sites and those sites could be accessed not only through PC or laptops but through smart phones/tablets. For example, many commercial banks have mobile applications and social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have mobile versions and could easily be accessed through smart phones/tablets. I tried to access mylot through my smart phone, although I could reach the site and open its home page, it was difficult posting responses/comments because smart phones/tablets have small screen then a normal PC screen. My suggestion is if mylot authorities could explore the possibility of launching its mobile application, then the number of users could increase many folds. I am not a technical person and I have no idea about its technical viability and how much funds are required to be spent on launching such a mobile application. It was just an idea which crept in my mind. I thought of sharing my idea with my fellow mylotters and the admin. I would like to know views of others on my idea, who are frequent users of smart phones/tablets. Needless to say mylot’s desktop version is working fine as of now.

Every sensible website owner keeps a sharp watch on how the site is being accessed and from what devices. I don't imagine that the owners of MyLot are any different. I have read that if 6% of users access the site from a smart phone or tablet, one should begin to think about creating a mobile app; if 20% of users are accessing it that way, then it's time to create one. MyLot actually took a step in that direction in 2013, when they drastically redesigned the interface. Most of the pages are now much easier to access and read on a tablet or smartphone, especially if you adjust the size of the text, which is really easy to do with the 'pinch' function of a touch screen. I find that the current interface is very easy to use from both my tablet and my smart phone, is quite readable and that I can also enter text relatively easily, especially if I use the speech-to-text feature, which works extremely well for me in most cases (there is the occasional word which it can't understand, so I then have to resort to typing, but, on the whole its as accurate as I could wish if I'm in a quiet environment). Creating an app would be quite feasible, though it would cost money to do. As a matter of interest, would you be prepared to pay for such an app? If so, how much (in dollars)?

Hello! I think that you did quite a research before coming out with your wonderful response. I did not have any idea that for creating a mobile application there should be at least 20% users of a site who access it through mobile/tablet. I tried to access mylot through my smart phone, however, pages were downloading slowly and fonts were small. May be my internet was slow and finally I gave up. Although, you have suggested that fonts could be taken care of, yet I did not feel as comfortable accessing it on mobile handset, as I would like to. It is interesting to know that you use 'speech-to-text feature'. If this kind of feature works fine, then I think accessing mylot discussions through mobile is very convenient. Which smart phone do you use? I understand that money would be involved in creating an application and that aspect is needed to be looked into by admin. As far as I am concerned, I would not mind downloading the application, even if it is a paid application. I have learnt so much from this site that I do not mind paying for its application. Thanks a lot for sharing your interesting views.

@dpk262006 I wonder if some phones make reading easier than others? I am using a Motorola and it is fine with other places I write online. Apps can be made for free, I think, but I have never tried.

i can never think of using a mobile other than for sms and talking. I prefer my big screen and a big keyboard for emails, and internet work and other offline activities.

@allknowing - I understand that you have the luxury of using your PC/laptop at your will and you feel more comfortable using your fuller keyboard/big screen rather than using a 5 to 6 inches mobile handset/8" tablet for mylot discussions. You could continue with the present arrangements. However, if you happen to get hold of a touch screen smart phone, it is possible that you may find it more convenient than PC/laptop because it is portable and you could use it anywhere. Thanks for sharing your views.

Hullo Deepak! I can access it only through mydesktop and prefer doing it this way. As for your suggestion, two thoughts came up . 1]I am not too sure of this from one aspect--leaving apart the technical viability that has to be determined by the admin, how many youngsters use this site on a fulltime basis? 2] May be it is sensible--People use 'Whats App' like crazy these days. So, if it is going to be easy then people may do it. But chatting with one liners and sending messages is slightly different from posting quality responses[which need to be at least three or four lines long isn't it? I don't know about the convvenience in this Smart Phone. I for one, prefer the traditional Blackberry phones rather than touchscreen .

Hello Kala! Yes, your points are valid in the sense that it is difficult to ascertain how many youngsters would use the site through mobile application. However, it could only be determined if such an application is launched. Secondly, as you use the word 'crazy' for whatsapp users, I would say the same that crazy whatsapp users may find mylot mobile application interesting and may get a platform to share their views (specially when they find that they could earn through their posts). Touch screen mobile phones are not difficult to use, as one gets accustomed to it. In fact these are pretty easier to use. I used to hold the same view like you before buying a smart phone. However, as of now I have become used to it (read smart phone) and it seems easier to handle than a full key board Blackberry mobile handset. . No doubt, it takes few weeks to get used to it. And you know it very well - "Practice makes a man perfect" Thanks a lot for sharing your views.

I think it's a great idea. I'm on my smartphone a lot and plan to use it to go on myLot in the future. If they had an app (or at least a mobile-friendly page), that would help a lot.

While I also have a smartphone nowadays I still prefer to use my laptop (at home) or desktop (at work) to access mylot and reply when I feel like it - I don't really like to get non stop notifications on the phone really.

Yeah, it is always better to access mylot on laptop or PC, which have a separate key board and bigger screen than a smart phone. As regards notifications, notifications are received through our registered email ID. You could switch off the notification off your email on your smart phone, then no notification will come. Thanks for sharing.

I would certainly use my phone more for mylot, if there were a mobile friendly version. Like the others have said though, there more than likely aren't enough that use their smartphones to access mylot, so they probably feel that it isn't worth getting an app unless a lot more decide to use it. I would pay for the app should they ever have one, and if it is a paid app. Of course having a free app would be better, but then it probably would cost to much to have it free. i have an IPhone 6 plus, and it is a 5.5" screen, which is small, but bigger in comparison to other pho0nes out there.i do have the talk to text reature, but i have never used it. It would be easier on the smaller screen to do it that way, as long as the words I was saying weren't mistyped and it would understan every word I had said. As it stands right now, i can access mylot from my smartphone, so I will be using it from time to time to post to discussion. Take care, and have a great day.

@rosekiss - Hello there! It is really interesting to hear that you would like to do mylotting on your smart phone. Yes, introducing such an application will surely depend on the number of users, more the number of users, more is the likelihood of introducing this kind of mobile application. Yes, like you I won't mind paying for the application because it would allow me more leverage and flexibility to access mylot. I think iphone6 is one of the best smart phones to use mobile applications. My brother has it and he always advice me to buy an iphone. Many thanks for joining and sharing your views.

I have a laptop, and an iPad. I use my laptop at home and when I am away from home I carry my Ipad in my handbag. I also have internet on my phone, Most of the time I am mylotting from my laptop. Sometimes I visit myLot from my Ipad and my phone. I check the notifications or write a few short comments, but I don't spend much time on the site, because it is easier and more convenient to use my laptop. If my myLot creates an app in the future I am going to use it.

Hello Porcospino! It is always more convenient to access mylot through laptop because of bigger screen and larger key board keys. I feel ipad should be good enough to check mylot and some of the time could be spend mylotting throug ipad. I understand that if a mylot application is created, you could use it through mobile or ipad only, it may not work on laptop because OS is different on laptops/PC. Thanks for sharing your views.

With an app, certainly it may bring a wider audience here. It would be most helpful to those who are always on their phones. But me personally, I still can't get a grip on using my phone as an internet tool. I mean, I know how to for the most part, but I just don't like it. I am much more familiar typing on a "real" keyboard with all my fingers (and still even to use a mouse!). I am much more comfortable, focused, and efficient sitting at the computer desk. But if an app were out there, I'd certainly check it out!

Hello dear! Yes, you are right that such an application may bring more users to mylot and that will be a boon because younger generation could be seen glued to their mobile phones 24X7.....lol. It is correct that working on a full key board is always convenient and better instead of handling a smaller size smart phone. Only advantage is that the smart phone could be carried anywhere, you could use it even when lying. Your responses/comments prove that you are focused and efficient to your jobs (means whatever you do). Thanks for sharing you views. How is life? Have a nice day!

Though I have a smart phone, it doesn't have a lot of space to add apps, so I use the desktop version anyways for my sites. Of course now that my data has gone from unlimited to limited, I won't be using my phone much to go online.

Hello Cermela! I can understand that some of the smart phones have limited memory and RAM and one cannot afford to download lots of applications. Of course, PC/laptop scores over a smart phone in terms of 'memory'. You are right that you need to use data package (which is not cheap) or wi fi connection to access internet (and mylot) on you mobile. Thanks for sharing your views.
