Pretend OCD test: When you catch a typo in an old MyLot comment of yours, do you fix it?

One of my kid clients concentrates hard and strives for "perfecton"

People with true OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) have invasive thoughts that they can only make go away with ritualized behaviors. But all of us have SOME OCD tendencies. I'm obsessive about having every corner on my speakers (the ones I restore) look good, and can spend hours on a two square inch area making it look "just so." I'm also fairly obsessive-compulsive about not having typos in my writings, whether it be school handouts or posts/comments on sites like MyLot. I just caught myself correcting a typo in a days old comment I'd make to someone who had commented on one of my posts. I responded to their comment, but couldn't leave that "thread" until I'd corrected my typo in the older comment. Would you do the same (correct a week old typo in one of your comments)? Or would you "let it go"? Are there other OCD things you do, even if you don't have true OCD?

It's only in the last few years I've realised I probably have a few OCD tendencies. I get obsessive about finishing a task when I could easily finish it next day. It might be really stressing my body to continue but I feel I must get it done. If I have a glass on a check tablecloth I keep lining it up on the checks. And I can't stand spelling mistakes.

We agree on spelling mistakes. With on-going projects (like hot gluing a screen on to a vintage loudspeaker frame) I try to find a good "stopping point." Else I'd be up all night.

I would feel obliged to correct an error in any discussion of mine, irrespective of whether it was several years old.

@TheHorse Everyone has wondered at times whether they have turned something off before leaving.

@Asylum Yeah, I don't think this qualifies me as true OCD. I'm just trying to think of quasi-OCD things I do. I also always have my keys, my wallet, and my chew in the same pocket.

@TheHorse For me this would depend what I was wearing. If I have a jacket on then my keys go in the top pocket, otherwise they are attached to me trouser belt loops.

I used to watch a show on cable about this subject. Some folks have some odd habits. When I was younger I had some OCD habits like checking the alarm and the front door lock. But I grew out of them.

Even after receiving half a dozen responses to my posts if I happen to see an error I edit it.

@TheHorse It definitely does not come under OCD, It is your high standard that demands it.

I should turn you loose in my kitchen. Alas, I'm not OCD about that space. It's become my wood shop.

I'm not that bad about typos but, as a journalist, I hate seeing people mix up things like there, their and they're.

Many of my community college students struggle with that sort of thing. But I was SHOCKED (and saddened) when I saw "your" and "you're" confused in a Huffington Post article.

I often correct old typos! I don't think that it's really OCD but, if it is, then at least it's a reasonably constructive and useful habit.

That's actually what I told my class the other day. If you're OCD about certain things, it simply makes you better.

I can say that about typos. After posting here even if I notice an error days later I will edit it. I can never think of not covering myself while sleeping - there are many more

I like to sleep under the covers. But sometimes I "pass out" with a paper and red pen in my hand.

@horse i think it runs in my family, we all have some quirky fixated habits. oh, and since this is about going back to correct old typos, hmm, did you notice the 'abut' up there in your discussion? yeah, i'm relieved this new mylot platform allows us to edit our discussions, responses and comments, instead of deleting, retyping and resubmitting them.

@hereandthere A pox on them if they do! Of course, I already fixed it. You saved me from the shame and humiliation I might have faced from having a typo in one of my posts.

If I notice a typo I always edit and correct, I do not like spelling mistakes. I believe we all have OCD tendencies. I cannot go to sleep if I have not washed the dishes and cleaned the kitchen.

@TheHorse I also never go out if I have not showered. It's usually the first thing I do in the morning because I do not even like to work in my home if I am not washed and dressed.

@LadyDuck A slightly different pattern there. I'm on my second cup of coffee, have eaten breafast, posted a MyLot post, and even done a little work on the dent in my truck, but I haven't showered yet. However, I will shower before heading out into the day, even if it's only to cycle.

Again, sounds like a "healthy" habit to me. Oh, I'd feel weird teaching a class if I hadn't showered that morning.

Peggy, there's a missing apostrophe in your comment! I can't bear it! (smiley face emoticon) Yeah, I corrected a couple of mine this morning.

I think everyone has a share of stories. If you ask me about correcting the typos, yes I will do that. lol. the OCD in me. Of course, who would want to post with a typo there, right? As much as possible if we can do it perfectly, why not?

@TheHorse I have a really spooky ability to spot errors. If someone puts up a powerpoint slide with hundreds of words, without reading them I zero in on the errors. It's really quite scary for people who see it happen.

@boiboing I notice them too. But it takes me time. Errors like "there" v. "their" or "your" v. "you're" make me mad. I don't make those.

I guess that I am probably OCD. I am a very compulsive speller! Before the internet, back in the old days when people wrote letters, I would find misspellings, and I would circle the mistakes. Not on my letters, but letters I received! But I never sent them back for corrections!

I remember letters! I still have some old love letters in my desk to my left. I never corrected misspellings, but I noticed them. Interestingly, I remember good spelling, and care about writing, as being important to me in the world of "attraction" back in my college days.

Yes. absolutely I'd correct the error! I really dislike seeing anyone's errors - especially my own.
