There seems to be a lot of Bah-Humbug going on all of a sudden

United States
December 11, 2015 11:08am CST
This is supposed to be a happy time, a time of the year we celebrate the birth of our Lord. Sure, it's commercial now days, but whose fault is that? It's not like that happened overnight, it's been this way for many years. The only way to change it is to stop buying gifts and participating in Christmas celebrations. So how do some nice, happy, usually very cheerful individuals suddenly turn all Bah-Humbug all of a sudden? I feel like I'm in a far off planet where I recognize no one. Come on - turn on the Christmas lights, have some eggnog and a cookie and cheer up! Ho Ho Ho - and an early Merry Christmas one and all. Photo belongs to me.

This guy here is in the spirit! No bah-humbug for me! So you know at least one person who is enjoying this holiday season! My family and I put the real meaning of Christmas at the forefront of our celebration, so it's kind of hard NOT to be happy and cheerful when your focus is in the right place!

Going outside for a quick shopping and staying in line because people are over shopping is not something that brings me in a happy mood. Once home, I get back to normal. A eggnog will surely help.

@AbbyGreenhill We always have rum in our house. Which is your favorite? Bacardi is a good rum, but I bought one during a trip in the Caribbean that is even better, Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum.

I like it when kids are around at Christmas. For me it's a bit sad, because we don't have extended family gatherings any more.

It is a shame that such a special time becomes so stressful for so many. I intend to have a great Christmas and I hope you do too.

It is not so much Christmas but the lead up to it that makes people tense. Money is an issue these days, children want presents that keep up with their peers and that can be very expensive. Crowds in the shops add to the hassle and there is all the food to think about with the shops being closed for a period.

Someone mentioned depression, and that's a vital thing. If you're suffering from depression and someone tells you you're supposed to be "happy" it makes things worse. There's also the religious element. Nearly every Christian knows that Jesus wasn't born on December 25th and that it was picked as a date to appease pagans who participated in horrific rituals (some of which we still accept, albeit toned down [e.g., mistletoe]). Many Christians do reject this falacy, but they are being told to "get over it" and "just go with the flow." That doesn't make for happiness. Why can't people feel the way they want to feel? It seems to be the best Christmas present you could give someone is let them be themselves.

@AbbyGreenhill -- you asked a question. Depression is a significant part of that answer. You also have to consider that people feel so pressured to "be happy" that it puts a strain on otherwise normally happy people. The "Christmas rush" is overwhelming to many people. Think about all the things people "have to do" this time of year that they aren't expected to do any other time of the year. Just the number of parties they're "expected" to attend (friends, co-workers, relatives) -- with everything that goes along with those parties (co-workers or relatives they don't like) -- is enough to make anybody a Scrooge. That says nothing of the financial strain this time of year puts on a lot of people. (I certainly don't want to go to my office Christmas party next week...but I kinda need the job...) AND you have to hear that stinking "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" 800 times a day for two months, starting in mid-October. I didn't mean to bring you down, I just meant to give you a look at the "other side" and why a lot of people just can't wait for December 26th. Enjoy the holiday season. Just understand why a lot of people don't.

I just made a simple statement...what people do is their business an I'm not changing them or care if they change. I did not mention depression at all. That isn't what this is about. I was perfectly happy and all of a sudden I feel rather grumpy myself.

Yes I am a bit of a Christmas humbug where consumerism comes into play but the actual meaning of Christmas makes up for it. People actually forget what the meaning of Christmas is really about.

@AbbyGreenhill I have a ton of Christmas spirit, enough to spread around. I love this season. I usually make a lot of gifts that I give. I also do not spend a lot of money. I enjoy family and friends and try to give of myself. I especially like the part when I help serve Christmas dinner to people that may not have one otherwise. If that doesn't get you in the spirit nothing will. I hope you, family, and friends all have a blessed and wonderful Christmas.

Christmas is not fun for me generally for a few reasons. A. I really don't have any money to spen dB.. I won't see loved ones until after the holidays. C.It takes time away from doing other things. I do enjoy Christmas parties though, and getting a good bargain so I am not totally grinchy!

My family (what's left of them) are 800 miles away, so it's just the two of use and we have made our own traditions. I don't care for Christmas parties so we all have different likes and dislikes.
