Roasted Whole Pig!

February 1, 2016 12:38am CST
Roasted pig is a delicacy that is often bought and celebrated at traditional Chinese/Vietnamese Wedding ceremonies along with special Birthdays and important parties or events. A whole roasted pig can be quite costly, ranging from $100 to $300+ depending on the size of pig you need to feed. Usually, for a regular evening if you want roasted pig as a dinner entree, you wouldn’t order/request an entire pig. At restaurants or asian butcher shops they will sell the pig by pound instead. You could eat the pig by itself, with rice, noodles, bread, use the bones in soup, and so forth. (Photo Credits) Belongs to me!

My neighbor roasted a pig on a spit once. It was delicious. i also had it at a luau in Hawaii. I could have eaten the whole thing! The last time I had roasted pig was at a Brazilian restaurant that friends insisted I order. It was fabulous. I wish more restaurants sold it.

Many are turned down by the looks of the pig, but it is really tasty! I have tried a few different roasted pigs from Philippines culture and Hawaiian but I like the Chinese version. I have yet to try ones that are homemade at home or from a Brazilian restaurant, but I can imagine the taste is good in their own way!!

@DianneN I think depending on restaurants they may or may not serve whole roasted pig. I usually go to the butcher for roasted pig by the pound. I do love pork dishes though!

We can purchase by pound also! We only buy the entire roasted pig if it is for a special occasion (like weddings, birthdays)

@infatuatedbby I dpn´t know how much a whole pig costs here. With twice the price of a big pig, I can pay for a holiday.

@TiarasOceanView I like to eat the pieces that don't have bone and with crispy skin especially. Roasted pig is a delicacy and is very costly so we don't eat it too often.

As someone living in China for more than 30 years, I'd say I've heard of roasted whole pig many times yet never tasted it even once

@infatuatedbby Roasted whole pig is a famous Cantonese cuisine, few restaurants can cook delicious roasted whole pig, only some top chefs in high-class Cantonese restaurants can, and it's usually very expensive.

The only time we bought whole roasted pigs was on our wedding day. Besides serving at the wedding dinner, it was part of the "necessary items" on Chinese wedding ceremony, though I think some may not follow this, both my parents and parents-in-law said we have to.

Yes, it is common at Vietnamese traditional weddings also to have the roasted pig. We also celebrated my nephews 1 year birthday with a big and 1 month birthday. But when we want pig, we just buy them by the pound at the restaurant or butchers.

In Italy there is a specialty called "Porchetta", it's a big whole pig stuffed with herbs and garlic and roasted, it's never served whole, but sliced, mainly by street vendors.

Just today we saw an electrically-operated rotisserie for roasting whole pigs or lambs. It was quite expensive.
