The fitting of my laminate flooring has been delayed already

Both rooms were measured and the price settled earlier this week. Once I had chosen the flooring that I wanted arrangements were made for them to come around and fit it. The arrangements were for the small bedroom to be done tomorrow, then the larger one on Monday. I have now had a telephone call from the company explaining why they cannot attend tomorrow, so both rooms are now scheduled for Monday. This has disrupted my plan of storing some of the items in the other room at the time and now everything will have to be moved downstairs. It is impossible for me to know whether the excuse of the vehicle breakdown is genuine, but I shall give them the benefit of the doubt at present. However, I will have real objections if they attempt to reschedule again.

How annoying it is when that happens! One can only accept their excuse, which is probably genuine, however I would have explained the logistical necessity that the two rooms should be done on separate days and insisted on a solution, though I suppose that you do have the assistance of the able-bodied floor layer to move the furniture from one room to the other. He certainly cannot be expected to sit there with a cup of tea (or to go for lunch) while you move the furniture!

My intention is to have the rooms empty before the workmen arrive, which will not be too bad since most is downstairs now already. Had I requested separate days they would probably have scheduled the small bedroom for Monday and the larger one at a later date, so both on Monday will be preferable.

@Fleura Yes, but it was still a logical question for you to raise.

Now that they have your money they feel they can do as they please, I generally use credit cards, that way if someone postpones the work they'd promised to do I can recant their payment. I've learned that when asking a contractor to do work it's best to have them start the work before giving them any kind of payment .... a lesson I learned in 2010.

I have no reason to suspect that the delay is anything other than a genuine incident.

@rebelann That would be a little unfair to a workman who had a genuine vehicle breakdown.

I'm always suspicious @Asylum so many times I've been ripped off simply because I am .... ok, was .... trusting.

Another job may be taking more time for whatever reason. It probably becomes embarrassing for some to keep making excuses whether truth or lies. Maybe they have a time management problem.

This did occur to me as the most likely reason. I would have preferred that they told me that rather than making excuses, but the end result is still the same.

@celticeagle This is more than likely. It is common practice to offer the customer a different excuse.

@Asylum ...But, they may feel embarrassed about the truth of the matter and want to stay in good standing with you.

That would infuriate me intensely. I have no patience for people doing that. And you have moved everything right?

It is quite common among tradesmen, but not so commonplace with a small family business. Hopefully everything will be done on Monday, after which I can refill the rooms and plan a holiday.

@AbbyGreenhill That does seem rather absurd. As you say there is no excuse for not knowing how to dispose of it since he must do this regularly.

@Asylum We contacted a small family business to do cement work on our driveway. That was two days ago, he came, checked the job and will get back to us. The problem, he has to find out where to dump the old cement...if his business is cement, wouldn't you 'think' he would know where to dump it already? He's not from our local area, but why not take our cement to where he normally takes it? this could go on for weeks....and then to get him here to do the work could take more weeks..that is why we start prepping head of time when we want things done.

@just4him To be fair to them I have reason at present to doubt whether they will attend on Monday.

That would be of no benefit to them because I would make the situation well known, which would be extremely poor publicity for a family business.

It is very hard these days to find reliable people to do almost any job. Hopefully it was a legitimate delay and they will come as scheduled on Monday.

I have my doubts about that. Most of the time, they promise a fast date just to get the contract signed.

That sounds like it might be a lot of trips up and down the stairs. I'm glad we live in what in England is, I think, termed a bungalow.

Oh know it would be so much easier to just move things from room to room but hopefully it still works out. My husband did the flooring in my son's room and my living room. It looks great but man is it tough to keep clean since we live in the desert everything seems to get covered with dust so quickly. On the plus side the laminate flooring takes no time to put in the longest part is getting all the pieces cut to size.

One benefit of having to move the furniture is that I can clean the empty room then clean each item as I return it. This may be laborious but will result in a better cleaning than would otherwise be possible.

Those things make my inner language turn foul! I hope they come on Monday. I am sure that you think that Monday is a long way off, specially when you can“t find anything. Did you find the lost cable?

That cable is not likely to be found until I begin to move the furniture and other items back upstairs. Monday is not too bad and at least it gives me adequate time to clean both rooms before the installation.

Sounds very frustrating having to reschedule and getting both rooms done at once. Nothing ever runs smoothly does it?

That kind of thing is so annoying. Of course vehicles do break down... could you ask them to do one on Monday and the other Tuesday or something?

They usually book most orders approximately one week in advance, so it very unlikely that Tuesday will be available. It will be preferable have both done on Monday to having the other done much later.

Wow that's ridiculous. People are put to a huge inconvenience when they need to move everything to have flooring or even carpeting installed. I really hope you're able to get this done soon!

I hate when that happens. We are still waiting on the marble tile we ordered two weeks ago. I am starting to get upset. Now they say tomorrow and it better be or they may feel my wrath.

The one point in their favour is that they telephoned me early today. It would have been annoying to receive such a call tomorrow while waiting for their arrival.
