Plagiarism by myLot newbies

This morning, I saw a post from a newbie. I was passionately interested in the subject, so I answered it. She followed me, so I followed her. I was looking at her discussions and thought the one I answered was well written. I ran the first line through Google and sure enough, it was Wikipedia. I recognized the rest of the article. I sent her a message saying that was not allowed and to always use her own words to write here. She has not answered. Then I saw another article on a subject I am interested in. I ran the first line and found the rest of it. It did not say who wrote it. Maybe they were quoting him. Should we give newbies another chance, or just hit report?

I would report it because they really should read the rules before writing anything, the rest of us had to.

@akalinus That might make a good post. Dear users who have a different home language. When you copy and paste it is called plagiarism, it is illegal.

@akalinus This is an English speaking site though, so maybe they should look up what it means after seeing it in the rules?

The rules say no plagiarism is allowed. But do people not familiar with English know what plagiarism is?

They wont get banned right away I think, they will be given a warning and the discussion will be deleted. let her learn the lesson.

@akalinus I believe it take multiple strikes before someone gets banned. I have some violations during my early days here but that is not because of plagiarism. It is because of the controversial nature of my topics then.

@CaptAlbertWhisker That is good to know. I really don't want to be the cause of someone getting kicked out.

So, if I report them, they won't be gone instantly? That is good to know. Then the rest is up to them.

@amadeo I was for giving her a chance to clean up her act. I told her copying from anywhere is not allowed and to say things in her own words. If I told her not to plagiarize, I don't think she would know what I am talking about.

She writes English but not very well judging from her other post. That is okay. A lot of people write here to improve their writing skills. She could have said the same thing in her own way.

This isn't the first time I've heard about it. Someone copied an article about strawberries awhile ago and were reportedly removed. Report this Mylotter. It's nothing original.

I think English is not her first language. She only had two posts and probably does not know the word plagiarism.

@akalinus Hmm. I see. I wonder if she knows what original means?

They should know the rules same as the rest of us. The second chance should be the report as they are ignoring the warning.

She has not answered my message. Someone else commented on the note I left on her page and thanked me for letting them know.

Report them. You sending a message is a very decent way of going about things but I don't message I respond on the discussion and leave links to the rules but I never give a second chance I'll always report them because it's bad for the site to have plagiarised content on it.

I will do that in the future. I felt bad because I fell for it and did not realize right away that something was the matter with it. If I see her name on a plagiarized piece again, I won't hesitate.

@akalinus sometimes it's hard to recognise plagiarism but often if you look at the persons other discussions it does become obvious. The reason I report it is because admin will remove it. The messaging thing will only work if the person removes the post but often they just ignore you and also they quite often try it again. If admin is told he can remove the post and if they try it again then he can ban the person.

I just hit report. If I thought that they were sincere and not spamming I might suggest other ways to include the content like linking to it so that it is not plagiarism.

I'd warn them and point out they should come up with their own posts. Then report next time.

The rules are pretty clear on any writing site. There is no need to plagiarize.

If I had been in your place I would not have sent the PM instead reported her at first instance only.

Maybe let her know - again - and say next time you'll report her? Maybe the second article was written before your first message to her.

I am sure the admin will look into it, especially now that it is on the discussion forum. There are some ho genuinely are not aware that they cannot copy paste content from elsewhere and they should be warned once but when it becomes a habit I guess proper actin will be taken..

Most people know that plagiarism is wrong so give them a warning just as a reminder incase they just came from a deserted island and then report the second time.

A plagiarism is not allowed in any writing and paying site so I think this person should be reported to the admin and actions will be given accordingly. I don't believe a second chance is all right because other newbies will also do the same.
