Shepherd's Pie... with a twist!

Fresh from the oven. Shepherd's Pie.

I have found that there are many recipes across the U.S. called by the same name but not containing the same ingredients... Have you noticed something similar? I made a Shepherd's Pie for our supper tonight... Of course, it might not be made the same way you or your mom/dad made the dish with the same name, though. Mine uses four types of meat with Soy Sauce, Mrs. Dash, black pepper, garlic, onion and bamboo all slowly browned together, then I used a can of Campbell's Cream of Chicken Soup ladled over the meat and veggie mix, a layer of mozzarella and cheddar cheese shreds over that, mashed potatoes spread over the cheese and finally, a layer of American cheese and jalapeno cheese layered on top. (Not much jalapeno cheese, though... My body doesn't do well with spicy hot foods.) I then baked it in the oven for 20 minutes at 350 degrees (F). The picture accompanying this post is what I took out of my oven about fifteen minutes ago. Do you find some items you make are made differently by someone else than you make them?

@DaddyEvil I have to have mild flavoring so jalapeno cheese is out. LOL Other than that I would be willing to try it once. LOL

@mommaj That is how I normally fix it, mommaj... We just had some jalapeno cheese we bought for sandwiches for Pretty, so I thought I would try a little of it. It tastes good, but a bit warm for me!

@MGjhaud Okay, you had me worried! I have been putting bamboo into almost everything I cook lately! I made the pie yesterday. The day before that I added bamboo to Chicken Noodle Soup. I makes a nice difference!

I've never found anyone else who makes Shepherd's Pie like we did when I was growing up... Several families make it like this now. (Minus the bamboo, since that is not even supposed to grow where I live. ) Uhm... you do realize this isn't pasta, right? I'm not supposed to have jalapenos, but I do like a little for flavor... I just have to be careful I don't put too much on anything.

Nope, our Shepherd's Pie is not like yours. I am not a huge fan of the way my brother makes it, because he makes it more like slop than anything. He is supposed to be the "chef" in the family, but lately he is being too lazy to really take the time to make anything the right way, which is usually the way it tastes best. I guess that one of these days I will have to break down and make a real Shepherd's Pie, because now it does sound good.

@DaddyEvil I usually use ground beef and possibly ground venison. I cook the ground meat with onions, garlic, celery, and shredded carrots (I shred carrots into anything and everything I possibly can, because my youngest absolutely hates them and refuses to eat them), and seasoning. I cook the potatoes and mash them with sour cream and butter. I add some beef broth and frozen corn and peas to the ground meat, and then spread the mixture in the bottom of the pan. I put the potatoes over the top, and then put cheese on top of that before putting it in the oven.

@purplealabaster Mmmm! That sounds fine, PA! Uhm... when did you say you were making that and bringing it by my house? (Hint, hint!) I don't hunt, so Pretty and I only get venison when one of my brothers gets an extra deer during the season... We love Bambi! (When Pretty was little she always wanted to know what I was using in our meals, so I got in the habit of telling her. The first time we had venison, she ask what animal venison came from, so I said deer... She ask, "Like Bambi?" So Bambi is what we've called it ever since! LOL!)

@pgiblett Well, that is interesting information, Peter! (I thought you became a vegetarian when you got married to one... I am not sure if it is normal or usual for Indians to be vegetarians, but if not, we have an awful lot of people from that country who are vegetarians on myLot!)

I've never had anything made using textured vegetable protein, @pgiblett ! Uhm... does that really taste like beef? (I am not sure but I think it very likely you ate beef before you were married, so might be able to answer my question. If not, I apologize for asking.)

I am quite sure my daughter would rather eat your Beef Stroganoff than mine, then, pony! She prefers rice, while I have difficulty eating it. Would you like to trade recipes for Chicken Noodle Soup? Mine does have bamboo shoots in it, too, though... (Can you guess what the first fresh food of the Spring is at my house? LOL!) Here is a picture of the soup I made yesterday... The bamboo shoots in this are the very pale almost clear pieces.

@Drosophila IDK about healthy, Wendy, but it sure tastes good! I've been making a lot of different recipes using the bamboo shoots. The bamboo usually doesn't produce shoots for long in the Spring, unless it is very wet, so I have an abundance of them right now, but will only be harvesting them for about a month.. I can't seem to preserve them by freezing or canning, either.

Uh... I am clueless about any kind of meat or non-veg food. LOL So, no comments on that. Although I should tell you that I love spicy food. And I see it doesn't go well with your body. And yes there are dishes that are prepared differently using different ingredients. Just day before yesterday on Wendy's post I was telling Vandana that "saag" is prepared differently by people that are not Punjabi. LOL

Dad does not like tamarind. So unlike all other folks around me, I substitute tomatoes for tamarind in many of the items that essentially require tamarind. I also use very little salt and pepper (chilli powder) while cooking because it may hurt dad, but add some when it is on my plate. Dad suffers from hypertension. I am a vegan - in case you forgot.

As far as I know, @just4him , I am probably the only person who adds chicken, sausage and hamburger cooked together to make anything! Most people here look at me funny when I say something about cooking more than one meat in the same recipe. (I was short of whatever meat I was using for something once (I think I was short of hamburger in something) so added some sausage to make up the difference. Pretty and I loved it, so I started experimenting with mixing different meats together in recipes... It has worked out well for us!

I've never had shepherds pie. Dad was from northeast TX and about the only thing he'd talk about was hog jowls n roast squirrel, he didn't cook n ma never had the inclination to make either. We did have plenty of soul food though, things like turnip greens or mustard greens with ham n smashed taters and dad loved grits with breakfast ... I can't stand grits though.

Oh yeah @DaddyEvil I forgot about those biscuits n gravy ... I used to eat the biscuits but not with gravy, I'd load em up with butter n cheese while they were still warm enough to melt the cheese. Ma used to entice me to eat buscuits n gravy by making chocolate gravy, wood you believe it was actually really good? Of course back in those days ma made everything from scratch and never used artificial garbage like margarine.
