Are You Being Followed?

… and who do you follow … and why? I find that I am following nearly 700 people and that about 1.5 thousand people are following me! This creates serious problems when I want to ‘Suggest’ a discussion to my followers because many of them have either long departed, are no longer active or don’t really actively follow what I do. Some of the people I follow are also no longer active. I try to follow people in whose discussions and other posts I am genuinely interested and with which I am likely to interact once in a while and I expect people to follow me for the same reason. There has to be some reasonable limit to this, of course, and I would expect no more than about 300 to be about the limit of manageability. I seriously need to reduce these numbers, therefore, so that I am only following people I’m really interested in connecting with and am only followed by people who actually show interest in what I post. Culling the ‘Followed’ list is pretty simple. There is an blue button saying ‘Following’ next to each one and I only have to click that to no longer follow them. Of course, it takes time to look at each person’s profile to see whether they are active and whether I want to keep following them or not. Reducing the number of people who are following you is not quite so simple. There is no button which allows you to stop them following you (thereby leaving only those you might want to ‘Suggest’ a discussion to on the list). The only way to achieve this is to go to the person’s profile, click ‘Block’ and then immediately ‘Unblock’ them (assuming, of course, that there is no reason for wanting to block that person). I can see that I have several weeks of concentrated work ahead of me! Most of the people I unfollow or remove from my following won’t know or care about it but if you happen to find that you are no longer following me when you thought you were, I apologise and would say please feel free to follow me again!

I have not so many followers, only 625, but it's a problem when I have to suggest something.

I, for one, are following you, @Lucky15. Please don't release me from following you, either.

It would be good if a "last date spotted" could be added to a profile if they have not been around over a certain time. This would show how recent is their activity.

I would like to see a "Last logged in" date on people's profiles, too (if not some signal to show that someone was online now). I believe that we did have this in a previous incarnation. I wonder whether @MyLotBugs has this on a 'wish list' already?

@JolietJake It's true that it does. It's not awfully obvious, however, and it doesn't show anything if the person merely logged in to read posts and did nothing else.

@owlwings .. Last date logged in will send many friends like Katerina out...that I would not be happy about...less than 10 posts combined with a period not less than 1 year from each date would push many spammers out I feel..

I no longer suggest anything to anyone, Always smiling. When I first started here I couldn't get the suggest button to work, so I pm'ed a bunch of people to a thread I thought was interesting. Everyone liked it. A few weeks later I found another I thought people would like, as well. Some did, one really didn't like it! That person took my hide off for sending them a pm instead of "suggesting" the thread to them! Alex looked at the suggestions button for me and fixed it. I have only suggested one thing to one person, since, and she ask me to do it!

I'm following people whose writings I am interested in reading, so not that many! As for those following me, I didn't think of that as a problem, if they want to read my musings, all well and good, and if not then they can just not bother to read them or ultimately, 'unfollow' me. As for whether 'to unfollow' is really an acceptable verb, that is a whole other question!

I remember myLot had a policy about inactivity. So if a person has been inactive for say about 1 year, and has less than 10 posts to his or her credit, all they need to do is purge them. I agree it can be a botheration about following and stuff like that, but we might be able to control some spamming with policy such as this.

yes, i learned that from jabo's post. it's been a while since i reviewed my following and followers list. i also know i've overlooked following people who i regularly interact with. i'll find time to do that.

I don't use the suggestion system - so I don't have to worry about such things.

To be honest, I don't even know how many I'm following, nor how many are following me. There are certain people whose posts I read, and they tend to be the same people who read mine. So I reckon I follow with my feet...or fingers. If I suggest a post, it's usually to one person with whom I've been discussing a certain issue.

Would it really matter if a suggestion went out to dozens of people? It's up to them if they respond or not. I'm not sure it is worth the time involved to tidy up the following and followers - but then I don't have near as many. I guess I'd just rather spend the time writing or interacting.

I have about 150 people I am following. I cut it way down a few months back. Why have so many I can't possibly keep track? But, that is just me.

The reason why I come here is not so much for making money as for learning English- just one of my hobbies ,so most of the people I am following are from UK and US with their posts being idiomatic English.Perhaps it is a little bit lopsided, because some who live in other parts of the world may speak English fairly well or they themselves are from UK or US and English speakers .

I pick my followers the same way you do. There are plenty of people who post literate, interesting discussions here on topics that interest me. I admit I've followed a few people back to encourage them even if their English skills weren't first class, but I still check profiles to see what they post and if I'm interested. Good luck with your project. I hope you leave me intact. I really enjoy participating in your discussions.

I culled my list of followers a couple of months ago and brought it down to a manageable level. However it's crept up now to nearly double the number I had it down to, so I might do some more culling. Nothing like the size of your task though.
