Nobody told me it was a Bank Holiday

Since retiring I have lost track of Bank Holidays because they no longer apply to me. Usually this does not matter, but it did today. After a brief wander around the city centre I chose to catch the bus home. On arrival at the bus stop I checked the time and noticed that the next bus was 12-38. When it reached 12-44 I began to realise that I would have to wait for the 12-54 instead, which was fine for me. Of course once the time reached 1 PM I was becoming a little impatient. A woman arrived and was reading the timetable, so I pointed out to her that she was reading the times for Sunday. Her reply was that today was a Bank Holiday and therefore Sunday service. Once I discovered that I threw the towel in and went to catch the Metrolink tram instead.

You know why I love reading posts from you all, I get to keep in touch with usages which I don't get to hear as often. "threw the towel in"...nice..:) Yeah..dad often does that...then I have to tell him...pretty much like tire getting deflated for him..lol

This is probably because of my age, I still use many phrases from the past.

I think throw the towel in comes from boxing but I'm not entirely sure. I think if their man was getting beaten the corner man would throw the towel in and end the fight.

I thought it was sunday today. Was walking to work at around 6.45 and there was no traffic. Then when I got to work I realised it was bank holiday...I got to be boss of the kitchen for an hour

It is good to know that I am not the only one who did not realise.

I wonder how you find out about bank holidays.

Since they constitute a day off work they are usually well discussed beforehand, but since I am now retired that no longer applies for me.

What is today's holiday over there? I hate making plans to do business and forgetting that stuff. Happens fairly often now that I'm retired. I lose track of what day it is.

It is Summer Bank Holiday, which is really just an excuse to have another holiday.

I agree: With 24-hr everything, including banking, what is the logic behind the modern Bank Holiday? Other than to confound and confuse...

@Asylum I can imagine. And just wait until the clocks go back, at Halloween this year...

@Asylum Do you think you could use it to your advantage? Apart from an extra hour in bed at this end of the change...

What holiday is today? I don't understand why the banks have off. Usually, it is a federal holiday.

This seems a common problem among some of the retired persons.Since I have retired,I forget which are some of the holidays.Time and date I can always see on my phone or PC.

I know since my husband retired, he also loses track of days and even I sometimes have to studying the calendar to figure out the date. I guess having a job 5 days a week, one is able to know not only the day, but the date quite easily..either that or I'm getting old and forgetful.

I used the date every day at work because I produced and distributed a daily work schedule to all sites. Nowadays I only need to know the date when it refers to an appointment etcetera.

@Asylum Yep, and even then I get lost and have to double check what day it is to see if I missed my appointment. Fortunately most doctors and dentists will send a reminder text.

Oh yes, unlike the bus service the Metrolink operates when most people are off work and available to travel.

Uhm... how does the timetable differ from a weekday to a Sunday or Bank Holiday? (What is a Bank Holiday? Am I being more dense than normal?) What time would you have had to wait if you still wanted to ride the bus?

On a Sunday or Bank Holiday the bus operates hourly, instead of the usual every 15 minutes. The term Bank Holiday came around because all banks are closed on such days and amounts to an official Public Holiday.

So do the bus schedules change on Bank Holidays too? Less I suppose because everyone EXCEPT Barry are home

That is exactly what happens, although it still seems odd to me because everyone is off work and available to travel.

So the Bank holiday is also a bus holiday? Maybe national holidays are called "Bank Holidays?"

Buses always operate a minimum service on a Bank Holiday, which for my service would mean one bus every hour.

It is Monday here too. I believe the actual date for the Bank Holiday was yesterday, but being a Sunday it is transferred to the next day.
