Phobic fears...

As the nights lengthen, and the temperatures start to drop, dark thoughts begin to rise... Those of us prone to vivid imaginations line up the phobias, those irrational yet very real fears of things unknown. The claustrophobe will feel trapped, the myctophobe will crave daylight. Triskaidekaphobia, a fear of the number 13, seems to be one of the more irrational ones. As the weather gets more wintry, the arachnophobe gets stressed as these eight-legged creepy-crawlies invade the warmer indoor spaces, appearing at unexpected moments when all the petrified observer can do is scream... Gymnophobic persons, fearing nudity, probably would have an extra-loud screaming fit. What would be your most irrational fear? Do you know the imposing-sounding phobia name? Paraskavedekatriaphobia has to be a popular one around these parts - fear of Friday 13th! See if your fear is known, look here - so long as you're not sesquipedalophobic, or scared of long words...
site sponsors This is an indexed listing of The Phobia List. Many thanks to Robert Haining for his work in compiling the list in this order. Please don't ask me about curing phobias because I know little about them. My interest is in the names only. All th

Things I am scared of are heights, snakes, sharks and a bit scared of bridges. For 5 years I was scared of leaving my house but that's way better now. I'm not entirely sure any fear is irrational as such as fear is a feeling and feelings sort of are what they are if you get what I mean in my crappy garbled way of trying to explain

My biggest phobia is Katsaridaphobia...the fear of cockroaches. I will scream like a little girl if a roach ever crawls on me! I will burn down my house trying to kill a roach if I see one! I would set off a nuclear bomb to rid the area of cockroaches, except for the fact that roaches can survive a nuclear holocaust!

I've heard that about roaches and nuclear explosions. I guess you did not like the film Men In Black...? Bugs feature heavily in 2 or 3 of the films.

@pgntwo I love the Men in Black movies, but I was pretty creeped out by all the bugs. I would die of a heart attack if I ever had bugs on me like that!

My fear is well known claustrophobia, there is nothing I can do, if I am trapped in a lift, or in a closed space I feel sick, I sweat, I cannot breath and my heart accelerate even more than usual (I suffer of tachicardia, that is not a phobia).

@pgntwo I am not going to watch. A friend wanted to make a trip to Luzern and he proposed to go with him. I know that we have to pass the Gotthard Tunnel to go there (almost 17 Km.). Thinking to the tunnel I was sick during the night. I decided not to go.

@LadyDuck Probably very wise. Tunnels don't bother me too much, but stepping on or off the top of a ladder makes me nervous.

On a trip to London one time, we realised the Greenwich Foot Tunnel, beneath the River Thames, can be quite oppressive if you are prone to feelings of claustrophobia... You may not like this 4-minute time-lapse video of the walk beneath the Thames that I found on YouTube:
We took a camera, went for a walk to Greenwich and did a time-lapse of our journey from Island Gardens DLR, through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel, past Cutty Sar...

Most phobias are completely rational. I fear people. People are horrid. My life is one big nightmare. I also fear lorries ... I predict that one day I will be squished by one.

But semi (as we call them across the pond) drivers are professionals. I fear that I will swerve to avoid a lane-splitting motorcyclist, causing light contact with a glass truck, leading to said truck to releasing its cargo, precipitating instant and complete decapitation for me, while the motorcyclist speeds off at 85 mph into the sunset. Irrational?

@pgntwo oh my god ok I read through the whole list and I am shocked with how many fears there are. Let me just say....not mocking these phobias but I can't believe that the majority of these phobias exist! I also picked out the ones I related to lol *Buried alive, being or cemeteries- Taphephobia or Taphophobia. ( cemeteries don't really scare me but buried alive does ) *Celestial spaces- Astrophobia ( I'm not totally sure if this is what it means but I did notice that whenever I look through my telescope into the night sky, I start to get scared and ALMOST panic. Doesn't bother me just looking up without a telescope but with a telescope, I will feel scared. I didn't think it was a phobia though ) *Choking or being smothered- Pnigophobia or Pnigerophobia. *Clowns- Coulrophobia. ( I'm not THAT scared but prefer them to not be around lol ) *Darkness- Achluophobia or Myctophobia, or Scotophobia. ( sometimes and depends on a few things ) *Flying- Aviophobia or Aviatophobia or Pteromerhanophobia. *Love, falling or being in- Philophobia. *Ocean or sea- Thalassophobia ( I like the beach but don't like big waves or swimming out too far. I freak ) *Sleep- Somniphobia. ( Sort of! Like if I've been having nightmares every night for a certain period of time I try to avoid sleep cause I'm scared of what I may dream ) *Spiders- Arachnephobia or Arachnophobia. *Undressing in front of someone- Dishabillophobia. Other than that I'm pretty normal @Daljinder Thank you for telling me about this!

@pgntwo - Friend PGN - I have a really common fear - close enough to the irrational, yet a part of everyday life in Mill Otter-like places. It is the concern over how to properly spell (f)(ph)obia. Which is it? Is it an F-word or a P-word? Shaking in the constant and intense need to know. Have fun and give away more great posts like this one. -Gus-

Oh, it's an F-word, but spelled with a PH. Like philosophical, rather than fossil. It's all about phonetics. Or fonetics. And phun, of course!

@MALUSE Well now, an enormous eagle swooped out of the sky above the thick bushes on Mount Abu a long time ago and plucked a large snake from the path in front of me, scaring the vegetable curry out of me in the process. From then I have always associated eagles and snakes with each other in a very negative manner.

@MarymargII Change "-phobia" to "-philia" on many of them, and you've switched it from "a fear of" to "a love for"... Language, it's quite cunning in many ways.

I don't personally have any phobias, but I am fascinated by them, as with the reverse, philias ("love of" rather than "fear of"). Ailurophobes are scared of cats, but ailurophiles love them. I'm definitely the latter. I love your awesomely creepy image!

I am paraskavedekatriaphobic and I had created a paraskavedekatriaphobia group on the old myLot. I have had various accidents on Friday the 13th, and since many years I never take a car or a public transport on these days. You have more car accidents on Friday the 13th than on any other days of the year, ask your insurer ; you might even have several plane crashes on Friday the 13th, it happened in 1972. People know it and planes are empty this day. Another example : last year I had an invite for a reception on a Friday the 13th. I would have had to take a train, and I sent a mail to apologize because of my paraskavedekatriophobia. During the night I received several phone messages asking me if I was safe? Yes, I was, I had not put a foot outdoors. And you know what : it was the day of the Paris attack at the Bataclan. It is the most reasonable phobia that I know : paraskavedekatriaphobia should be encouraged.

I do not like my face submerged in water or any thing too close to it. I once had to be taken out of an MRI scan three times as I couldn't handle it. My other totally irrational fear is toads and frogs. I only have to see one to literally experience a kind of shock reaction inside. As for heights. I was once rescued off a hill as I froze and could not go up and down. I felt such a fool!
