You have heard about the tornadoes in Tennessee and it certainly is a tragedy. One of the tornadoes hit in the town of Athens, TN. The tornado took down a Sav-a-Lot grocery store and there was damage to homes and other buildings in Athens.
The Chattanooga news team had a reporter on the scene in the parking lot of the downed grocery store. She interviewed two people who had gone to look at the damage. It was a mother and daughter from the town and they both expressed sadness over the destruction.
At the end of the segment the mother said, and I paraphrase: It could have been worser, much worser,

I hear the word 'done' misused a lot. They done instead of they did or they have done.

@AbbyGreenhill .....I was astonished years ago when, working as a telephone operator, I happened to speak to a customer from the east who said I had an accent. I had never thought of that before. I'm sure most areas of the US have certain phrases too that are incorrect but normal for the area. I can sometimes figure where a person is from by listening to what someone says and how they say it.

@AbbyGreenhill When I was young I knew a few people who would use worser, which sounded so bad to me.

Oh. My. Word. The news reporters do that to us too. Every time we have a tornado they find people to interview with no teeth, or someone who, when giving their name, says to call them Big Mama.
Those people are always the ones that make the newscast, and they have no idea they are being laughed at. They are just regular people who happen to be less educated, or weren't blessed with a high IQ.
It just reinforces stereotypes.

@AbbyGreenhill I agree. And I cringe inwardly when I hear that. I have to think they'd speak properly if they knew how? Even though it seems obvious.

You don't need a high IQ to speak proper English. She isn't a stereotype - she's one of thousand.

Cringe-worthy, for sure. Unfortunately, the use of good grammar isn't drilled into young heads like it used to be.

If anything had been drilled into this woman's head it didn't work - the suv they were in was pink and grey - inside.

My Mother would have had a fit if she heard that "bad English"! My Mother taught Elementary School when she was younger and one of the subjects she liked to teach was English. She considers herself an expert in proper spelling and usage of English.
When I was a kid and still even today, if she hears anyone of us use bad English, she will correct us. And I do have memories of her saying that "worser" is awful!

@LadyDuck People who speak poor grammar probably don't know they do, or they don't care.

No way, that's very common around here. Not a lot of education and too many country songs.

@AbbyGreenhill The old country ballads are quite intriguing. Their origins come from Scotland and Ireland.
