My pumpkins are on their way

Some weeks ago I planted some butternut pumpkin seedlings in one of our 'tank' garden beds. I think these are called butternut squash in America. There is an automatic watering system so I don't always go out there to check on the plants. Then we went away for four days over Christmas. And look what I've come home to! One plant in particular is going berserk. I hope it doesn't get into the guttering or it might devour the whole house. Hopefully the fruit won't be quite as big as those big leaves. Are you growing any vegetables?

It is nice to be able to go into the garden and pick fruit straight off your own trees. What types of fruit trees do you have? Your grandfather left you a nice legacy.

It certainly seems like it is yes. I can“t grow things like that but the small pines I have planted I have hardly every watched and they have taken off overnight too.

It's always a lovely surprise to eventually go out there and find the plants have taken off.

@lovinangelsinstead21 It's funny isn't it? They must get their roots down to water or something and away they go.

I remember I plant a squash too in our front yard. I did not know it crawls fast and occupies a lot of space. They are easy to grow.

@averygirl72 I've never tried it with coconut milk. Do you cook the pumpkin in it? Or mash it and add the milk?

@JudyEv we have a small communal garden between 6 apartment flats - just lawn and patio - no balcony

@arthurchappell So you can't even grow stuff in pots. We don't grow many vegetables. The stuff in the shops is local, fresh and reasonably priced and we're away quite a bit so we don't bother with too many vegetables but pumpkins are like Herc - easy-care and low maintenance. :)

@JudyEv We are waterers...our little garden (in season) gets watered daily. Consistency is the important thing with watering. But in a shallow garden like our raised bed it dries out daily in the summer heat so there were days he had to water twice a day.

Pumpkins are nice and easy here - as long as you have the water for them.

We have tried many times to grow any type of melon. Never had any success, until I once threw a farm market pumpkin in the compost pile. Lo and behold the next summer I had 4 pumpkins, go figure.

We had a tomato plant grow up in the middle of a chook pen (fowl yard) once and it had dozens and dozens of tomatoes but it just came up by itself.

It is very satisfying to grow things although we're not good gardeners at all. Picking your own vegetables just hours before eating them is pretty special.

Your pumpkins look healthy, let them run, so you will have plenty of fruits. I have only parsley, sage, rosemary and spinach in the garden right now, it's winter here.

@JudyEv Nothing grows in my winters. Up in the northers part of the US where the only thing growing is the amount of snow on the ground, which I'm hoping to see soon according to today's forecast.

This reminded me of our pumpkin patch when we lived in Cambridge many years ago. It took over a hidden away corner behind the garage. We gave it no care at all and it provided us well!

We have leaping kangaroos but so far they haven't bothered the pumpkins. The first year we grew them they started to each the fruit and I had to cover each one up. The raised beds are good for me as I have to be careful with my back. Gardening isn't the best for it.
