David Bowie will be the first!

I just saw a news item which left me, well sort of shocked In March Royal Mail will be issuing a set of 10 postage stamps to honour David Bowie. This is the first time that an artist has been honoured in such a manner... Why with him and not with others who left before him? Were John Lennon and George Harrison unworthy? I am baffled, and in disagreement with this decision.

I don't disagree with the basic idea but I do disagree with their choice of person to be the first honoured in this way. Bowie was one of the greats but other people had more impact in my opinion.

Mine too and I was really surprised to read this. Ok he left his mark but so did MANY others before him.

That really is strange, it's not as if he was overly popular like Elvis or the Beatles. I only like one of his songs, remember 'Fame'? I think it was his only hit at least the only one I could think of.

There were many of his songs that have worldwide fame. I don't remember the one you mention particulalry but I was not a fan of any of his songs at all. Indeed the Beatles, and many other British artists who left the scene long before him were as famous, if not even more, and I don't understand why they did not get the same recognition at all.

@rebelann I am not really knowledgable on the 'class' thing (and I don't like how people are placed in those type of categories at all). I have no idea if he has any connection with the Royal family but I doubt that would be a reason for choosing him rather than another deceased artist.

Is it possible he has family connections @mysdianait ? I have heard that in many European countries nobility is still regarded as upper class .... I know I am ignorant about that stuff, here we only have the very poor, poor, lower middle class, upper middle class, well to do and rich. And that doesn't cover the silly actors or musicians many hold with high regard.

This seems like a desperate excuse to issue commemorative stamps so that they can sell sets and first day covers.

Indeed you might have hit the nail on the head! I saw some comments on Facebook from people outside the UK asking for people in UK to send them postcards with these stamps when they are released.

@mysdianait This is the main reason that several different issues of stamps are released during the year. As we know it is big business for many countries. Of course this does not really help collectors, which rather proves the old saying "Philately will get you nowhere".

@mysdianait We had commemorative stamps for the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London last year. Since when has 350 qualified as a significant milestone?

Although I think it's cool that he gets to be on postage stamps, yah, I do have to wonder why he was chosen to be first honored artist. Maybe I am wrong, but I am thinking maybe because he passed away just last year . . . whether a fan or not, people may have him fresh in their minds (which may help with postage stamp sales??).

@much2say The leftovers of artists you think are so-so, stick them on bills I like your idea of choosing several artists rather than just one I wonder why they did not choose to do it like that.

@mysdianait That is very true. Perhaps the better thing to do was to pick a few different artists rather than just one . . . that would have pleased more of the public. The stamps with the artists you love, send them on letters to your friends. The leftovers of artists you think are so-so, stick them on bills .

I do not think that it has been made for a contemporary singer in France, but we can ask for personalized stamps and I am quite sure that they would not refuse to print a personal stamp with John Lennon : it is just business.

No apparently not. I think that we have lost many artists who could have appeared on stamps long before he left the scene and do not agree with this choice one bit!

@mysdianait I would agree. I was not a huge Bowie fan, but I feel I might be too young.. also his style of music doesn't really interest me.

I'd buy David Bowie stamps but I do agree that other people deserve the distinction as well. Who would you have chosen to have this honor first Ms. D?

Gosh until now I have not had to answer that question and I must put my thinking cap on! For sure, even though I was not a fan of the Beatles, I think John lennon and George Harrison both deserved that type of recognition before David Bowie.

@allen0187 Well, if they are not going to appear on stamps before they die, I think you will have to wait a while for those

@mysdianait I'm not a Beatles fan as well although I wouldn't mind owning Beatles' stamps but I'd value David Bowie stamps over Beatles' stamps. In fact I'd value Mick Jagger and Adam Ant stamps plus Oasis stamps over Beatles' stamps. Just a personal preference.

Probably and no doubt due to the fact that stamps are no longer used much these days so it is just a strategy to increase sales Merit probably has nothing to do with the choice whatsoever.

Did they really talk it through before actually having him in their postage stamps? They ran out of heroes and patriots to put their stamp on? I'm sure there's gotta be some one else's better and have more good influence than this guy.

Uhm... if the same thing is happening to mail there that has happened to it here, then they are trying to figure out ways to earn more revenue to cover keeping snail mail flowing. That is the reason the Postal Service here has been issuing special stamps, gold foil stamps, solid gold figurines related to mail and first edition postal envelopes.

@mysdianait Exactly! What's the point of having a stamp in my name when I am not even there to be happy or sad about it? I want to enjoy it while I am still alive and kicking!

Interesting. In the US, a person has to be deceased five years before being considered for a stamp with the exception being presidents. You are right. Why not a rock series with Bowie, Harrison, Lennon, Keith Moon, John Entswhistle etc.
