Sitting on one’s glasses is never a wise move

Glasses with lenses removed

Yes, absurd though it may seem, I actually managed to sit on my glasses today. This is something that I have never done before despite wearing glasses for many years now. I was in the process of cleaning the lenses when I heard the kettle click off, so I placed them on the settee while I made a coffee. Returning to the living room I clumsily forgot about the glasses and sat down. Needless to say that I immediately realised my mistake. Both lenses simply popped out, although the frames appear to be undamaged. Tomorrow I shall have to visit the optician in order to check whether the lenses can be secured into the frames again. For some reason resetting lenses never appears to be so simple, or at least the opticians tend to suggest so.

That's a bummer. Hope they can be repaired.

So do I because I am accustomed to having a spare pair.

@MarshaMusselman I have always insisted on having 2 pairs as a safety measure, but have not needed them before now.

@Asylum Well at least you have a spare pair, I thought it was your only pair.

It is annoying when you need your glasses to be able to see where you left them...

That was the problem. If I had them on I would not have sat on them.

At least both the frames and the lenses remained intact. Hope you will be able to get them repaired with only a small cost.

I can happily accept a reasonable cost as long as they can be securely affixed.

Good thing you didn't get cut by your own glasses.

The glass is reinforced and unlikely to break so easily.

@Asylum I see. I've heard of some that are even made out of plastic. How are you without glasses? Can you work without them?

@Beatburn No, not a hope. I can see adequately to walk around in general, but cannot use the computer or read the prices on products in the supermarket.

Have you tried to do it yourself? Sometimes they just pop back in again.

It is never easy to secure the lens, so they would be prone to falling out at some time.

@Asylum I guess that's true. Once they have fallen out once, it could easily happen again.

@JudyEv As it turns out the frames are damaged anyway. I never noticed until the assistant pointed it out to me.

As it turns out they cannot be repaired because I damaged the screw fittings.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Apparently they cannot be fixed so I need to take care of my remaining pair, otherwise I would end up buying new ones.

@Asylum Uh oh that does it then. Never mind it happens to all of us that wear Glasses. So careful not to damage them. Maybe he won´t charge you too much I hope to fix them up.

Those are tough glasses. Must be expensive to have them replaced, or even fixed.

I am sure that he can reset the lenses in the frame, I know that they make it difficult, but they can.

The main criterion is how secure the lenses are.

@LadyDuck Oh I do realise this Anna. You pay hundreds of pounds for good frames, then 2 years later they insist that you have to buy new frames because the old ones are not suitable.

@Asylum My niece has worked 4 years for a glass frame company, she knows that opticians are pleased to make people believe that it's a hard task and the lenses once reset are not secure, it's because they want to sell new frames.

I've done that on my bed and luckily the bed gave enough so that they weren't damaged. I've got several cheap pairs around the place, just in case. I hope yours are able to be repaired.

They will not just pop back in because the lenses need to be secured. Otherwise the lens will simply fall out at some time.

I've done that to my sunglasses many times. Sometimes they will pop back in easily and other times it takes me some time to get it, but I usually do. They are not prescription sunglasses so it would be silly to have the professionals do mine. You'll have to remember to put them on a table or ledge in the future and not anywhere you or another person might sit. Does this mean you can't mylot without them or can you see fine for certain things? How are your eyes doing these days anyway?

Fortunately I do have a second pair, which I have done for many years now. Of course I do want then repaired so that I still have a spare pair.

This is why I always order a second pair, or at least keep my old ones. I learned that after I broke my first-ever pair and didn't have any spares. My girlfriend and I then went to a restaurant and she had to read the small print menu out aloud to me. I'm sure the staff and other diners thought I couldn't read and write!

I did purchase 2 pairs because prior to retirement I would have been unable to work without glasses. Nevertheless, it would be well worth repairing the damaged pair and returning to having a spare pair.

I bought 2 pair of lenses with fine frames. I realised quickly my mistake. I fall asleep while watching TV and the glasses roll under me. Now I bought stronger frames and it seems that nothing short of a cataclism will destroy them

Unfortunately they will heavy and bulky compared to those with less sturdy frames.

@marguicha I must agree that the safety aspect justifies the heavier frames.

@Asylum I know. That´s why I prefered at first the less sturdy ones. But after ruinig 2 of them in a few months, I decided to use the heavier ones. I think that now the glasses are less heavy too.

@Asylum Really! Now, I know other are like me too, I always have a spare one, just in case the other one breaks or gets lost. I actually have my reading glass by my bedside table, anther on my bag for the office, and another on my office drawer. I guess I am an OCD. ha ha ha

I've worn glasses since I was 2 and boy have I done that plenty of times. You're lucky the frame is in good shape, I always managed to break the frames. Mom finally wised up and started buying me 2 pairs of glasses just in case.

The frames were not as good as I had thought because the section that holds the screw was broken.

That's not good @Asylum now you'll have to purchase a new frame. I used to break the nose piece and mom would tape it up because she didn't have the money to buy me a new pair at the time.

@Asylum I dislike putting a "like" on that statement. I am about to have my eyes checked, it's been too long. Perhaps getting two pair is a good idea, I have never needed a second pair. But like you, there is always a first time.
